Opening letter from Rev d Rosemary Dear Friends in Christ, I write this as we celebrate Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit and the church s birthday, the great events on the day of Pentecost as described in Acts 2. It must have been amazing for all the people of the different nations to hear the message of Peter in their own tongues. In Portree we are well into the tourist season with all the guest houses displaying signs saying No Vacancies. How do we engage with our visitors in the same way as Peter? We have not been given the same gift of tongues but we have been given the gift of hospitality. We were generously given some money from the diocese for a Mission project. This is enabling us to develop our Rectory Garden into a Quiet Garden for use by anyone in the Community which will provide a pleasant outdoor space for quiet reflection. The guidance of the Holy Spirit can be seen here with a task force from the Unpaid Work Service being immediately provided to clear the plot. What a wonderful job they have done! Hopefully the garden will communicate the love of our church community for all. Hopefully local and visitor alike will enjoy time in the garden. It is hoped that the garden will be sufficiently ready to bless after our Patronal Feast Day on Sunday 10 th June. By our actions of love, through the Quiet Garden, Bread Basket, through our engagement with local community services, through our Tots group open to all and in letting our rooms to Skye Cancer Care, we are showing our love for our neighbour in action. Matthew 28 calls us to Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. In today s post Christian era the best way of sharing our faith is through example. May we all share the love of Christ in our deed. God bless you all, Rosemary St Columba s Newsletter June-July 2018 Page 2

St Columba s Day and the Quiet Garden Our Patronal Feast Day will be celebrated on 10 th June this year with a celebration of the at followed by Blessing of the Quiet Garden. Hopefully as many as possible will then stay and join in a Bring and Share Church Lunch. The idea of a Quiet Garden stemmed from the lack of quiet garden space open to the public in Portree. Now that we are no longer providing week long clergy holidays, the garden became available for general use. There was much work to be done in clearing the old vegetable garden area. We are indebted to the Community Service boys who have transformed this space. Grateful thanks are also due to the Diocese of Argyll and The Isles who chose to distribute money which had not been spent on a Diocesan Mission Officer last year. The Vestry decided to put the majority of this into the Garden project. We are also very grateful to Kathleen McCormack for her continued hard work in the flower garden near the Parish Rooms door and to Eileen MacDonald for maintaining all the tubs. Archie would welcome any volunteers who would like to assist with grass cutting over the Summer months, a job he has faithfully undertaken for some years now. The Garden will be registered with the Quiet Garden Trust and, once blessed, will be open to all in daylight hours. We are following in the footsteps of St Columba sharing the love of God in our community. Do join in our celebrations that day! St Columba s Newsletter June-July 2018 Page 3

St Columba s Summer Music Festival A new treat in store for both members and visitors to St Columba s this summer - over June and July we are staging a number of concerts to suit all ages and tastes in music. We do hope that this will entice more visitors through our doors, will show everyone that our church is alive and kicking and will, God willing, help us to raise some much-needed capital towards our heating fund. To those of you who are not regular attenders at our Sunday services, we must explain: - the heating system in the church is past it s best - and has been for some considerable time! To replace it is going to be costly - very costly - and so we are all trying to find ways to raise funds to supply a new system before the winter. We are hoping that this music festival will be a big step towards our achieving our goal. In addition to this you will see that we have items on sale - cards depicting our beautiful stainedglass windows, larger versions, mounted on card for framing, tealights in handcrafted wooden holders, a variety of other craft material - all made by members of our own congregation (including the children) and, hopefully attractive to both locals and visitors alike. The programme for the festival is still not completely finalised but so far, it looks something like this: - Friday 15th June at 7.30pm: Following on its success of last year we open the festival with a concert given by our local musicians, both instrumental and vocal. Friday 22nd June at 7.30pm: AERIS BRASS - this is a trombone ensemble covering all genres of music. They have done many tours and concerts across the UK and performed with internationally renowned soloists. Based in London, the group perform both internationally and across Scotland. Tuesday 3rd July at 7.30pm: An organ recital by internationally acclaimed organist, Professor David J. Smith from the University of Aberdeen. Those of you who are members of SCM will remember his playing the harpsichord with AB24 last winter. David has given masterclasses in organ improvisation for the Academy of Music, Gdansk and on French classical repertoire for the Royal College of Organists in King s College Chapel, University of Aberdeen. Always in great demand, he has very generously, and freely, given us this recital to aid in our fundraising effort. Friday 20th July at 7.30pm: Duncan MacKay will give a concert of classical and traditional music reflecting his somewhat amazing variety of musical skills. Duncan studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Stuckhausen Stifftung fur Music, Germany, the University of East Anglia, the University of Glasgow as well as the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow. We wait with anticipation to see what delights he has in store for us. Also available for sale, will be CD s donated to us by Duncan. Friday 24 th August at 7.30pm: Alanna MacFarlane, a young bassoonist and friends will be performing. From Plockton, we hope to have a concert from the young soprano, Fiona Mackenzie (if she can arrange time off from rehearsals from Falstaff in Glasgow!) watch this space! Fay St Columba s Newsletter June-July 2018 Page 4

Aeris Brass Concert 22 nd June Heating Update As soon as we can secure estimates for the heating system, we will apply for a Provincial grant. If possible we will submit an application to diocese by July so that we will be considered in the August Provincial Grants awards. Failing that we have to wait for December! We will have to apply for other grants as well or raise matched funding ourselves. It is possible to apply for an emergency loan in the meantime as the work is essential for our wellbeing as a congregation. St Columba s Newsletter June-July 2018 Page 5

All Age We have recently established the 1 st Sunday of the month as an All Age. In May the theme was Love thy Neighbour. We were delighted to welcome several visitors to the congregation and ended up having to add chairs to the horseshoe formation to accommodate everyone. The youngsters enjoyed making a display out the letters of the word love along with other activities based on this. The service concluded with a warm glow from glow sticks scattered around the horseshoe as we sang When I needed a Neighbour, were you there? Please join us on the 1 st Sunday of the month. 9 Sea Sunday 8 th July Living on the Isle of Skye we are quite used to seeing ships, whether they be ferries or perhaps cruise ships. These can be luxurious and spacious, with onboard cinemas, shops and casinos. They carry thousands of passengers and hundreds of crew. But the majority of ships are cargo ships and are not at all like this. They are anything but luxurious. The ships may be large but the crew quarters are generally small and cramped and quite basic. They manage with small numbers of crew to save money. Some of the ships that come to British ports have a crew of between six and nine seafarers; this is the bare minimum to cover a 24-hour shift. Seafarers are extremely important to this country. We don t usually see it but 95% of everything we use, comes in by ship. That s the food we eat, the clothes we wear, our phones, our cars, just about everything. Sea Sunday is the global celebration of the enduring and vital work of the Mission to Seafarers. It has been happening every year for over 160 years and is their biggest fundraising event of the year. This year Sea Sunday will be celebrated on 8 th July Sea Sunday focuses on a church service and here in Portree we will celebrate it at St Columba s at our and later in the summer a special short service to be held on the Quayside by the Lifeboat station, or inside the station if the weather is inclement! On Sea Sunday, the church can become a powerhouse of prayer and fundraising for the work of the Mission to Seafarers, and we can join with thousands of other Christians from London to Lagos, Manila to Melbourne and Durban to Dunkerque who come together to pray, celebrate and fundraise for this vital work. Sea Sunday is when we have the opportunity to remember and pray for seafarers, their families and all who support them. It is a day of remembrance, prayer and celebration, and an opportunity to think about and thank those seafarers who work tirelessly throughout the year bringing us goods we often take for granted.
