1 St Columba s Scottish Episcopal Church Largs November 2016 Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:1&2a) 1

2 The Scottish Episcopal Church is a self-governing province of the world-wide Anglican Communion. This is a family of over 70 million Christians in more than 160 countries. Our nearest relations are the Church of England, the Church in Wales and the Church of Ireland. Through the Porvoo agreement we are also in full communion with many other branches of the Church. St Columba s in Largs, is one of over 60 Episcopal congregations that work and worship within the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. We are part of Ayrshire Region and our neighbours include congregations in Ardrossan, Dalry, Irvine, Troon, Kilmarnock, Prestwick, Ayr and Maybole. The area covered by St Columba s includes Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie and West Kilbride and ecumenically we play a very active part in Largs Churches Together. 3 Dear Friends, This month is often referred to as the month of remembrance. It begins with the Church remembering all the saints; those whose life shone bright with the image of Jesus. Then, the next day, on All Souls we remember with great affection and in prayer, those whom we love but see no longer. Though separated from them, both they and we are held in the common embrace of God s loving presence. November is the month in which we also remember, in silence and solemnity, all whose lives were laid down in warfare for the freedom of others. Throughout the year their neat rows of names continue to be displayed on our war memorials, but it is on 11 November and remembrance Sunday that we make them our focus and pay special tribute to their sacrifice. Each time we celebrate the Eucharist there is part of the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving that is particularly poignant; it is called the anamnesis. It is a theological term that states that during the prayer we remember but, as we do, we call into the present moment the reality we recall and celebrate. At each Eucharist Christ, and the reality of all his saving work, comes to us in a unique way. The bread and wine become his body and blood - his very real presence in our midst. As we receive these we receive him and all his saving benefits; his help and strength for our journey. This remembering changes us from individuals into his living body, the Church; called to be his presence in our world today. With God nothing is lost and love is eternal. May we live as those that remember who we are and whom we serve. Yours in the faith, Gordon 3

6 60 Years membership of the Mothers Union M.U. members joined friends and family of Barbara Flinn (98) and enjoyed a celebratory afternoon tea at Burnlea Nursing Home on Tuesday, 25 October, to mark her 60 years as a member of the Mothers Union. Throughout her long life Barbara has been very active and involved in many community ventures including WRVS and Mothers Union. It was way back in 1956 in Newton Abbot, Devon, that she ran a Mothers Union branch and initiated a pram pushers group to help young mums feel less isolated. In the various places she has lived over the years Barbara has worked hard for the benefit of those around her through initiatives like Meals on Wheels, Lunch Clubs and many other forms of charitable work. This involvement was officially recognised when, many years ago, Barbara was awarded the British Empire Medal for her service to the Community. Gill, the diocesan M.U. president, presented Barbara with a special certificate and the gift of a M.U. scarf. Congratulations, Barbara, on another important milestone - celebrating 60 years of membership of the Mothers Union. Guild Open Meeting Members of the Guild at St John s Church of Scotland, in Bath Street, have extended an invitation to the ladies of our congregation to join them for worship and fellowship at their open meeting. This will take place at 2.00pm on Monday, 7 November in the Dunn Memorial Hall in Church Street. The speaker will be Kevin Simpson who will speak on North Malawi and an offering will be taken for his charity. Afternoon tea will be served and it would be helpful for those catering to know how many visitors to expect. If you would like to attend, please contact: Susan Stevenson: Tel susan.0809@live.co.uk 6

11 A Family Questionnaire from Hilary Our youngest daughter has sent us this family questionnaire. We have found it interesting to hear our responses, from the very old to the in laws. Worth asking your family? As Anna says - So I have been listening to a podcast on Spotify and the most recent episode had a segment about people they missed and questions they wish they had asked them. This got me thinking that fundamentally as a family we chat about the day to day but isn't it more interesting to know the deeper answers to unasked questions? So with this is mind I had a long think about whom I most wanted to ask questions and what they would be. What seemed like the logical answer was I wanted to ask you Mum, Grandma and dad the questions initially. Life stories are so interesting so whose is better to get to know than my own family's. And if you aren't comfortable with any of the questions then just skip over them. Can you write the answers. No rush with the responses. Love you xxx 1. What did you enjoy or like about your childhood? 2. What did you think about high school? 3. When you think about a fork in the road in your life, so far, what was it and why did you choose that particular path? 4. What happy memory will you cherish forever? 5. What could your parents have done better? 6. What have you always wanted to tell me, but haven t had the courage to? 7. Growing up, who inspired you the most? 8. If you had to do it all over again, would you pursue the same career path? 9. What is your biggest regret? 10. Best trip of your life? 11. What amazes you most about society now? 12. What do you miss most about your growing up years? 13. Looking back at your life thus far, what are you most proud of? Hilary Moran 11

12 Columba s Creatives Prayer The children of Columba s Creatives jointly wrote the following prayer following a talk on St Luke. (Drawing by Sophie Birch) Dear Father, Thank you for artists and doctors and the talents you have given them. We pray for our loved ones and all who are hurt or sick. We particularly remember those people we have lost. We pray that you will help us and people in debt and we hope that the refugees from Syria may be able to return safely to Syria soon. We all love Columba's Creatives and thank you for the fun we have, the crafts we make, the new friends we meet and the games we play like tig, Marco Polo, catch and rolling on the floor in nets. We thank you for the stories we hear about Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and about you, our Father. AMEN from Sophie, Libby, Lucy, Chris and Megan. 12

13 Christmas Greetings 2016 For the last few years some of us have published our greetings to the congregation on a special Greetings page in the December magazine instead of sending individual cards. The money which would have been spent on cards is instead donated to church funds. This has raised over 200 each year. As most of us see each other and can exchange personal Christmas greetings at this season, I would encourage more of you to join this scheme - and help save the trees too If you wish to participate, please fill in the form below and put on the collection plate in an envelope marked Christmas Greetings, or hand it to John Lamb or any sides-person before 20th November, so that your greeting can appear in the December magazine. Christmas Greeting:. From:. Donation:.. Note: If you do not wish to cut your magazine additional forms are available at the back of the church. 13
