2 The Scottish Episcopal Church is a self-governing province of the world-wide Anglican Communion. This is a family of over 70 million Christians in more than 160 countries. Our nearest relations are the Church of England, the Church in Wales and the Church of Ireland. Through the Porvoo agreement we are also in full communion with many other branches of the Church. St Columba s in Largs, is one of over 60 Episcopal congregations that work and worship within the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. We are part of Ayrshire Region and our neighbours include congregations in Ardrossan, Dalry, Irvine, Troon, Kilmarnock, Prestwick, Ayr and Maybole. The area covered by St Columba s includes Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie and West Kilbride and ecumenically we play a very active part in Largs Churches Together. 3 Dear Friends, It happens to me every year and each time it does, I am always taken aback at the timing of it. This year it was as I drove through the streets of Kilbirnie - the sighting of the first house showing an illuminated Christmas tree in its window. This sighting took place on Thursday, 15 November! Just short of six weeks before the annual celebration of our Lord s Incarnation, there it was for all to see. Obviously whoever put it up simply couldn t wait any longer. They were so keen that their Christmas decoration was there over two weeks in advance of the season before Christmas - Advent. Advent is all about waiting all about preparation all about getting things in order for the coming King. It is a time that calls us to reflect on God as the one who comes among us - who has come in the past and who will come again at the end of time. Most of us, like the people who put up their Christmas tree unseasonably early, are simply not good at waiting. We want things to hurry along to their conclusion as quickly as possible. We like things to be instant; and yet waiting is part of life. The scriptures remind us that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. In fact patience is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Waiting aligns us with the many generations that, in ancient times, longed to see the coming of God s Messiah. It also assists us to stand in solidarity with all those who, in our own day and generation, long to see something of God s decisive action - of his justice and peace in the world. The coming of Christ marked an end to the old order of things. In the Christ Child we see something of God s complete commitment to us. In Christ God is with us, as one of us. This is a mystery beyond our comprehension; one that we need to take time to ponder and reflect on. God s gift to us of the season of Advent, the season of expectant waiting, provides valuable space in which to prepare ourselves to receive all that he would seek to give us. May we keep a watchful Advent that, in time, we may also celebrate with joy the one who came, the one who will come again and the one who promises to journey with us each step of our life s pilgrimage. 6 Advent Study Group 2018 You are warmly invited to this year s Advent Study Group. We will meet in the Rectory at 7.30pm on the following dates: Wednesday, 5 December Wednesday, 12 December Wednesday, 19 December The Bible study will be based on Advent. Season of Divine Encounter by Amy Ekeh Advent means arrival or coming. During this sacred season, we actively recall the arrival of Jesus as the Word made flesh, and we joyfully await his final return at the end of the age. But as we remember the past and anticipate the future, we are also attentive to our divine encounters in the present, the ways God arrives in our everyday lives. Amy Ekeh's Advent, Season of Divine Encounter helps us look closely at three key Scripture passages to recall, recognise, and anticipate the ways God comes into our lives and our world... Protection of Vulnerable Groups Coordinator Report 2018 The PVG coordinator is appointed to take responsibility on behalf of the Vestry for ensuring that the work of the Church is carried out in accordance with the Law and the Church s policies on the protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults. These policies focus on prevention and safeguarding by ensuring that anybody appointed or volunteering to do regulated work with children or vulnerable adults have their details submitted to Disclosure Scotland who check for any relevant criminal convictions. Vulnerable adults include those people who, because they are affected by disability, mental disorder, illness, infirmity or ageing, are unable to protect themselves from abuse, or are more vulnerable to being abused than persons who are not so affected. 6

7 Regulated work could include teaching or supervising Sunday School or providing some kind of regular welfare service to people with particular needs. We have children at Columba s Creatives and our annual Summer Mission as well as occasionally at our Sunday Services. All persons currently involved in these activities have a PVG. It is the responsibility of Vestry to ensure the correct procedures are followed. At the beginning of each year I must submit a Protection Record to the Diocese confirming that amongst other things we have all the correct signs and posters in the Church and Hall and that Vestry members have seen the most up to date safeguarding advice. I also must confirm that anybody involved in regulated work has the correct level of PVG clearance and has received relevant training. I am required to provide a PVG report to every Vestry meeting. The Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator (OSCR) also requires the Vestry as charity trustees to notify them of any events that may have a significant impact on the charity or its assets. In particular, any incidents of abuse or mistreatment of vulnerable beneficiaries must be reported to OSCR as well as notifying the statutory authorities (Police, Social Services, etc.) and the Provincial Officer for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults However, as the SEC website reminds us it is important to remember that it is everyone s responsibility to protect the vulnerable and everyone working in and attending services in the SEC has an important part to play in developing a safe and supportive culture within the Church that protects everyone, regardless of the nature of their vulnerability. If any member of the congregation has concerns about possible incidents involving children or vulnerable adults, they need to notify me as the PVG Coordinator. If I am not available and there is somebody at immediate risk, the Police or local Social Work department should be contacted. 8 Largs Monday Toddlers! We are beginning to look forward to our Christmas party on Monday 3rd December. Santa is so busy he has to come early to us. We will need to find a Santa first and arrange our live music we usually have, along with festive food and a nativity puppet show maybe? This will be followed by a volunteers lunch. We will be starting back after Christmas on 7th January. Environmental health changes! I will continue to offer training to church members who use the kitchen for different events. These will be held after church on the odd Sunday, so everyone will have the opportunity to understand the ways we should be buying, storing, preparing, cooking and serving food. We can still do home baking for events, but following the guidelines I will give you. Hilary Moran.. Taizé for Advent You are warmly invited to join with others throughout the town for our Taizé for Advent service. This quiet, meditative and reflective service, will take place in our own church at 6.30pm on Advent Sunday (2 December). Seasonal refreshments will follow in the church hall. Nine Lesson and Carols This year s Nine Lessons and Carols service will be an ecumenical event. Local choirs will sing together and people from various congregations will share in the reading of the lessons and singing of carols. This joint service will take place at 6.30pm on Sunday, 23 December in St John s Parish Church. 8

12 Vestry Notes The Vestry at their meeting on 6 November took the following decisions/ actions: Blythswood Shoe Box Appeal: 24 filled shoe boxes have been returned. Diocesan Synod: The Rector and Chris Evans, Lay Representative, were receiving ongoing correspondence in connection with the work of the Preparatory Committee. Diocesan Christmas Party: A Children s Party for the Diocese will be held in Glasgow on 24 December. Advent Quiet Day: An invitation has been received for our congregation to attend Advent Quiet Day events in Paisley and Castle Douglas on 8 December. Property Matters: St. Ninian s Window: Chris Evans updated the Vestry on meetings he had held with Rainbow Glass, a stonemason and our Insurer s Loss Adjuster regarding the St Ninian s stained-glass window and the other three lancet windows, two circular top traceries and four triangular top traceries which were all affected by failed perimeter pointing. He advised that (i) all four lancet windows need to be removed for the works to be undertaken at a total estimated cost of 9,000 and (ii) our Insurers may meet the cost of repairs to the St. Ninian s window, estimated at 3,000. The Vestry, recognising the need to address the issue as a matter of urgency, authorised Chris to pursue the works required to resolve matters and, additionally, to arrange for the cleaning of two of the lancet windows. Chris to inform the Dean of the proposed works. Trees Behind Hall: Chris also reported on three quotes he had received for the removal of two sycamore trees bordering the driveway, another tree nearer the hall and the lopping of a fourth. Ray advised that the trees were not understood to be subject to a Tree Preservation Order. The Vestry agreed to accept the most favourable offer in the sum of 1,400 from Treeline. 12

13 Stuart Robertson reported as follows: 1. The new replacement windows will be installed in the Rectory on 12/13 November. 2. Crawford Landscapes have undertaken a site visit regarding the removal of bushes and shrubs along the front of the Rectory and to resolve the flooding issue caused by the slabs at the side of the Rectory. Costings are awaited. 3. The gutters around the Church, Hall and Rectory will be cleaned on 17 November when anyone able to assist was asked to meet Stuart on site at a.m. 4. Thanks were given to Chris Evans for pressure washing the block paving leading from the Church to the Hall. 5. It was noted that Mark Yeomans was kindly donating a noticeboard for the wall inside the front door of the Hall. 6. Arrangements are being made for the annual servicing of the boiler and fire extinguishers and for PAT Testing of all electrical goods. Chris expressed his disappointment that the ad hoc arrangements for grass cutting had not been satisfactory and suggested it be put on a more formal basis. Stuart undertook to contact Crawford Landscapes for a costing to cut the grass on a regular basis and to cut the hedges annually. Treasurer: The Treasurer reported that the Accounts for the year to 31 August 2018, approved at the Congregational AGM on 28 October, had been sent to the Diocesan Office and OSCR. Our Financial Schedule had also been completed for the Diocesan Office to calculate our quota for the coming year, the Treasurer making a case to exempt the 1,000 grant from the Council for the Food and Friendship project. The Treasurer spoke to the Budget Report as at 31 October 2018, copies of which had been previously circulated. He explained the makeup of the report to the new Vestry members and advised that the surplus for charitable activities of 6,882 was after only two months of the current year so some figures may be artificially high. Social/Fundraising: It was agreed to establish a group to assist William as Social Convener. Alice McDonald and Linda Young offered their services and it was suggested they meet with William and approach 13

In that regard the Rector would run a training course which other members of the Team could attend as refresher training. Health and Safety: It was noted that on 4 November Hilary Moran had given a presentation on the Food Hygiene Regulations to bring those on the Church tea rota and others who may use the kitchen for the preparation of food up to date with the requirements. Congregational Matters: The Rector undertook to provide Ray with details of new members to be added to the Roll. Mission Action Plan: The Rector reported that MAP7 had been launched on 30 September and the first of the monthly Food and Friendship lunches held on 21 October. The next lunch will be on Sunday 18 November and was available to anyone, including members of the congregation and friends. It was noted that the next meeting of the MAP Group would be in April/ May Vestry Awayday: It was agreed to hold the Vestry Awayday at St Bartholomew s Church in Gourock on Saturday 12 January 2019 commencing with the Eucharist an 9.30 a.m. and concluding with lunch at Café Continental at 1.00 p.m. Date of next meeting: To be agreed at the Vestry Awayday on 12 January Ray Young, Vestry Secretary 14
