The Scottish Episcopal Church is a self-governing province of the world-wide Anglican Communion. This is a family of over 70 million Christians in more than 160 countries. Our nearest relations are the Church of England, the Church in Wales and the Church of Ireland. Through the Porvoo agreement we are also in full communion with many other branches of the Church. St Columba s in Largs, is one of over 60 Episcopal congregations that work and worship within the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. We are part of Ayrshire Region and our neighbours include congregations in Ardrossan, Dalry, Irvine, Troon, Kilmarnock, Prestwick, Ayr and Maybole. The area covered by St Columba s includes Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie and West Kilbride and ecumenically we play a very active part in Largs Churches Together. 3 Dear Friends, This past month has seen reason for national celebration as we marked the 92nd birthday of H.M. the Queen and, a few days later, greeted the birth of a new prince. This month many look forward to a royal wedding when, on 19 May, Prince Harry will marry Meghan Markle. In a world that is so full of bad news and difficulties, it is easy to slip into skepticism and to become world weary. The occasions I have just mentioned could, if we are not careful, also be tainted with this unhealthy approach. Things can be different, though, and occasions that are positive and life affirming can, in fact, help to draw people together and remind us of values that can be found at the core of the gospel (the Good News) - that life is stronger than death, and that, even in the midst of life s hardships and trials, we can find goodness and genuine occasions for celebration and thanksgiving. This month the Church sees the fulfilment of the great 50 days of the Easter season and the celebration of the gift of God s Holy and lifegiving Spirit at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is God s presence and guarantee. The Spirit reveals to us just how dynamic the life of God is - that God is not restricted, not limited to ancient stories of the saints and distant miracles; but rather God s life, breath, and energy - the bond of God s eternal loving presence, is offered to each one of us each day. The Spirit works within us to transform us into the people God created each one of us to be. The Spirit seeks to energise us, that the whole of God s creation might be released from all that enslaves it and liberated to reach its full and beautiful potential. If God the Father is God over us, and God the Son is God with us, then God the Holy Spirit is God within us - closer than we could ever have imagined - never to leave us nor forsake us. May we know the transforming power of God s Spirit within ourselves and in the whole of creation. yours in the faith, Gordon 3

Singing into history! During Lent this year we were using music by John Marbeck for the Sung Eucharist. For some of us this is an echo of the past when nearly every congregation was familiar with the setting used Sunday by Sunday. But we are not always aware of quite how much echo there is in this music. Who was John Marbeck? Born in 1505 he was trained in music during the period of transition in liturgy caused by the English Reformation. He trained as a Roman Catholic but survived to compose for the new Protestant Church of England. Survived is the right word because at one time Marbeck was threatened with death. He was arrested in March 1543, arraigned before the Privy Council and condemned to death for promoting Protestant teaching. His employer, the Dean of St George s Chapel Windsor, petitioned for a pardon which was granted to John Marbeck of New Windsor, Organ-player. Being a church musician in those days carried with it a level of risk that even the most controversial organist does not have to face today! Marbeck threw his lot in with the Protestant reformation, he even contributed to a Commentary on the Bible. He continued to play for services but gave up composing for the time being. When some stability returned to church life and worship as the Protestant form of faith became established there was a need for someone to create music that was sufficiently familiar to aid worship, but also sufficiently novel not to be associated with a kind of liturgical nostalgia. Marbeck was the man. He set the Communion and Matins services from the Prayer Book to simple melodies. Marbeck composed a perfect set of music for his day - and so it lasts down to our own use in church in Lent. His music has been described as a stroke of genius. That isn t the end of the story - worship went on changing in England and Wales for a generation until under Elizabeth 1 there was a final settlement - and a new flowering of composition with composers like Tallis for example. But John Marbeck s contribution and his fidelity to music - even when threatened with death for it deserves recognition. And when we use his music we are joining in a celebration of a tradition spanning 500 years. You would have to agree that Marbeck wears well and that was all nearly lost in Church musicians take heart! +Idris! The Rt Revd Dr Idris Jones Ref: O Sing unto the Lord. Andrew Grant 2016! 5

Smalls for All update We have collected 91 bra s and 21 pants this last 2 months, mainly thanks to Eleanor for collecting them at Ayrshire Hospice shop in town, which is now recognised by locals as a place they can drop them off. As you can see from the latest news below, new underpants are very much needed to tie in with another charity which provides reusable feminine hygiene kits. If you can encourage friends to donate new pants or give a donation for these, it would be great. These last 2 months we will have affected 102 children and women by these donations. Newsletter Thanks to Jane Williamson, U.K. Director Days for Girls, and Linda Dykes for making the trip from Carlisle to pick up 600 pairs of pants. Days for Girls provides washable, reusable feminine hygiene kits, which are produced by thousands of volunteers worldwide enabling girls to stay in school. I m hoping we can support the work of Days for Girls in the UK to help get more kits to Africa by providing the pants for the kits. We also were able to get 1200 pairs of pants to Akwaaba Volunteers, an NGO in Accra, Ghana thanks to Martin Palmer who picked them up from me, and to his daughter Jordan for taking them out to Ghana. Jordan will be making sure our smalls go to the women and children Akwaaba support in the local community where they are based. We were also thanked in the list of people who have donated items. the Mothers Union (Glasgow & Galloway), the Mother s Union (Largs) Hilary Murder Mystery Supper Deadly Fame 7.00pm, Saturday, 19 May Buy your tickets now Adults: 10 Students and under 18s: 5 6

Centenary of the end of the Great War I am grateful to Gib Fitzgibbon for helping us remember something of those who served during the Great War that ended 100 years ago this year. Here Gib continues to share something of his family archives, relating to the conflict. My Great-great-Uncle Herbert Clifford Bernard was born in Cheltenham in 1865, and entered Sandhurst as a Queen s Cadet. He was gazetted to the 2nd Battalion 67 th (Hampshire) Regiment in 1884, and joined them at Secunderabad. In 1908, in the course of a distinguished military career, he was appointed commanding officer of the 45th (Rattray s) Sikhs, and commanded it until he retired on 25th April, When war was declared on August 4th 1914, as an experienced officer, he had no problem in securing an active role. He wasn t prepared to wait until an Indian Brigade became available, and accepted the command of a new battalion. He travelled to Ireland where he raised and trained the 10 th Battalion the Royal Irish Rifles, the South Belfast Volunteers, part of the 107th Brigade of the 36th (Ulster) Division along with the volunteers from North, East and West Belfast. It was a far cry from the well-disciplined and motivated Indian troops he had been accustomed to, being recruited from the streets of Belfast, quite a challenge to train. Many of them had already served in the Ulster Volunteer Force. After a few months of training, beginning at Ballykinlar, Co Down, they left for the Sussex coast in July They continued their training throughout the winter and the spring of 1916 in readiness for the Battle of the Somme. 1916, of course, was to be a watershed in Irish history, and the Easter uprising in Dublin would not have been far from the mind of anyone in command of an Irish battalion, especially someone whose cousin was the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin. On the evening before the opening of the Somme Battle, he was said to have remarked I hope this war will settle the Irish question. The Ulster and the Irish divisions shoulder to shoulder in France should consolidate the home front afterwards despite the Easter Rebellion. The next day, the battalion had not even reached their jumping off point when they came under heavy fire and Col. Bernard, who was leading his regiment in person, being the only Colonel in the Brigade who did so in defiance of a general order, encouraging his men to move forward, was killed by a shell. He was one of the 5,500 casualties killed, wounded and missing of the division. He was buried at Martinsart British Cemetery. 8

In Flora s Garden - Maytime Many years ago at School in our singing lessons, we were taught a number of traditional songs and madrigals, which we joyfully sang in unison, with plenty of fa-la-las. One such was Now is the Month of Maying, written by Thomas Morley and published in We used to belt it out at the beginning of May and not one of us had any idea that it was a very bawdy romp full of innuendo! The month of May has generated many familiar traditions, songs and sayings, which we all recall. For example Ne er cast a clout till May be out (and being a cautious soul, I interpret this to be when the May blossom is out, rather than when the month ends); and Here we go gathering nuts in May, (which apparently means knots of May twigs ). Across Britain, May Day itself and the days following, were celebrated with abandon. Originating in pre-christian times but never quite dying out altogether, the Festival of Beltane was enjoyed on the first of May with maypoles, coupling, carousing and bonfires. Many traditions began at dawn, like washing one s face in the May Day dew. Dew was once considered to be Holy Water as it appeared miraculously overnight. The Beltane bonfire tradition was regenerated in Edinburgh in 1988, with the Fire Parade along Prince s Street to Calton Hill and in Cornwall, on the eighth of May, Helston celebrates with the ancient Floral Dance (another song we sang at School). In Oxford (where celebrations last a week) the first of May is greeted by the choir of Magdalen College, who sing the Hymnus Eucharisticus at six in the morning from the roof of the College s Great Tower. As recently as 1959, when F Marian McNeill published The Silver Bough, a Christian service was held on Arthur s Seat in Edinburgh at five-thirty on May Day morning (taken by the Minister of the Canongate), which according to McNeill had well over two thousand worshippers. May itself is also the month of Queens. Pre-Christians crowned The Queen of the May, with garlands of blossom (a tradition now re-invented by neo-pagan groups) while the Roman Catholic Church identified St Mary the Virgin as The May Queen and around the eighteenth century declared May as the Month of Mary. Although the practice tended to die out in the mid twentieth century, many Roman Catholic churches today decorate a statue of St Mary with flowers and a crown for the duration of the month of May, linking into her status as The Queen of Heaven. In Ireland, where the Month of Mary tradition is strong, celebrations and services take place in the open air, in gardens and woodlands, in thanks for the unrestrained growth that is generated in May. 10

And it is a glorious month of profusion and greenery. Having had so few days in the garden at the start of the year, I was surprised to find on a hot day in April, that the garden had jumped into lavish life, and from such a slow start had managed to catch up. And all of this came about in spite of me! I had done some perfunctory weeding in between showers and biting winds (that eventually drove me indoors), but apart from that it was mainly untouched. All I had done was dig out the plot of dianthus and carnations, as they had become straggly and needed to be replaced by healthy new plants and I had planted out some seedling foxgloves in spaces at the back of the border. Otherwise, I had done very little despite all my good plans for the start of the year! However, in the space of two weeks the garden had been transformed and the weather was more conducive to being pro-active. I gave the Buddleia (front garden and back) a hard prune in mid-april, which will stimulate strong branches for the large and heavy flower heads and used my edging tool to tidy up the borders. I prepared the plot for sweet peas and noted that the red clover that I had dug-in last autumn had rotted down, providing nutrients that sweet-peas love. It will be well towards the end of May before I consider putting in new plants. I have two large tubs on the patio where I grow Spearmint and Applemint (because left to its own devices mint spreads in all directions!), and once the new shoots appeared, I gave them a good watering with feed. For a number of years, I have been using Organic Seaweed feed, which is a very gentle but highly effective stimulant. It can be found in good garden centres and on-line. If May is a time for being busy in the garden, it is also a time of rest and play. So important was May Day as a festival, that it was given as a holiday from work; one of the few statutory days-off permitted in the past. This strong connection of the first of May with the workforce meant that eventually it became known as Labour Day. Now, in our calendar, May Day, with all its multitudes of layers of meanings, has ceased to be a glorious celebration, but has become degraded to just another Bank Holiday on the first Monday of the month. For many it will just be another shopping day. I find it sad that such a robust and joyous Festival has all but died the death, but I will be out in my garden early on May Day morning, and I will wash my face in the dew, and I ll reflect on Maytime and all it represents. 12 Vestry Notes The Vestry took the following decisions/actions at their meeting on 24 April: The Vestry recorded their congratulations to the Rector and William who will be married in the Cathedral of the Isles in July this year. Communications: 1. The Vestry completed the Provincial Safeguarding Audit which is being carried out across the Province to assess the current effectiveness of the Church s safeguarding practice in order to identify areas requiring to be addressed. 2. The Rector drew attention to the notice being read in Church regarding the removal of ashes from the memorial garden at the Church of the Holy Cross in Knightswood and their re-interment in a new memorial garden at St Bride s Episcopal Church, Hyndland. 3. The Rector reported that Claire Johnston would be addressing the Synod on the General Data Protection Regulations which come into effect on 25 May. Property: The Vestry will hold a Garden Tidy and deep clean of the Church and Hall on Saturday 28 April from a.m. Stuart Robertson reported that (i) a new wall heater had been fitted on the back wall of the Church; (ii) the water heater in the kitchen was still not reaching the required temperature for teas/coffees and Gordon Murray of GEM Electrical will look into the problem on his return from holiday next week; and (iii) coping stones on the boundary wall with The Old Rectory had new mortar applied. He also reported on problems with the drainage from the gents toilet in the Hall and Chris Evans showed photos highlighting issues due to tree roots which will require a water pipe being re-routed and the installation of new plastic piping. Stuart and Chris will draw up a job specification, to include hot water provision to the Gents toilet, and seek three quotes for the work. Stuart also reported that the kitchen had been organised and on works required in the kitchen to enable the Food and Fellowship project to commence. It was agreed (a) to fit a cooker hood, (b) to provide lockable lockers for coats and handbags and (c) to provide electric hand driers in the toilets and relocate a paper towel holder to the kitchen. Chris Evans reported that the Agent for the Aubery View flats had been advised of the Vestry decision to review the lopping of trees in 2020 and every five years thereafter and no response had been received. Treasurer: Chris Evans submitted a report on the Budget to date showing a surplus of 1, and advised that since the report had been compiled some 7,500 had been received from the Gift Aid and Gift Aid Small Donation Scheme. He 12

further advised that our investment portfolio was down due to falls in the Far East markets. Chris also reported that the stained-glass window had been repaired and replaced by Rainbow Glass. Social/Fundraising: William Ferguson reported that the first Car Boot Sale had raised some 1,200 and thanked all who had helped on the day. A Murder Mystery supper night will be held on Saturday 19 May. MAP: The Rector reported that the Summer Mission Professor Theophilus Cabinet of Curiosities would be held from 2 to 6 July. He also advised that the Property Committee were unhappy with the choice of porch light as they felt it was not robust enough for the location. In order to progress the Canon 35 application for works to the Church porch, the Vestry proposed an alternative style outdoor multi-armed pendant porch light and if the Property Committee did not find this acceptable to request they advise a style they considered suitable. Mindfulness for Life Workshops: The Rector reported on a proposal by Lorna Reid to provide Mindfulness for Life Workshops. Lorna was trained in the delivery of such workshops which would be held over eight weeks and the 30 cost for her as the Supervisor would be met by the 15 to 20 people attending each workshop. The workshops run for two and a half hours with some practise work between sessions. The Vestry welcomed the initiative as a contribution to outreach and agreed to invite Lorna to hold two 1-hour taster sessions in May and June with a view to running two eight-week courses in September to November 2018 and January to March Chris advised that the Hall was generally free on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Library: The Rector reported that Fiona Munro was willing to provide the library service. He proposed that a bookcase be provided in the entrance hall so it exposes all hall users to Christian literature with an honesty book for borrowing and returning. Fiona would speak to Ken Hinshalwood regarding the library service in the light of his experience. The Vestry welcomed Fiona s input and agreed to (i) the purchase of a bookcase and larger notice board and (ii) the disposal of the tables located in the entrance hall. Hall Entrance Mat Well: It was agreed to ask Ten Percent Carpets if they could sort the mat well which was breaking away around the edges. Welcomers: The Rector undertook to include an article in the magazine to say it would be helpful to Welcomers if members of the congregation would say if they were willing to take up the elements for Communion. Date of Next Meeting: Tuesday 3 July at 7.00 p.m. in the Rectory followed by social. Ray Young, Vestry Secretary 13

Ayrshire Regional Council Meeting: St Peter s Dalry - Tuesday, 20 March 2018 After being welcomed by the Regional Chair, the Revd Jim Green, we were introduced to the speaker for the evening; the Revd Chris Blanchshow. Chris is the Agricultural Chaplain for the Church of Scotland. Revd Blanchshow was, as he put it, a pioneer from Cumbria. He had recently been appointed by Ayr Presbytery and comes with 34 years farming experience. The role is an initiative and involves Chris working primarily with the working farming communities. These are communities that due to their intensive on-site work can be quite isolated. He works with no building as such, he is very much a travelling Minister; primarily working through the Farmer s Market to make contact. He travels and visits individual farms, offering Pastoral and Spiritual care, dealing with all manner of issues from health, depression to drug dependence. Farmers have one the highest rates in the U.K. for suicide with one per week on average. Chris sees his role as outreach and he now has contact with over 250 individuals some of whom attended a Christmas Carol Service at the Cattle Market in Ayr. Using social media, he has reached out to not only the farmers, but their families. Chris is one of a series of Pioneering Ministries set up by the Church of Scotland, the others include; Stirling University, Glasgow School of Art, as well as Housing Associations in both Glasgow and Paisley. These Ministries are centrally funded by the Church of Scotland, generating events throughout the year. Chris works closely with other denominations and looks forward to expanding his role in Ayrshire. The remaining part of the meeting dealt with initiatives from other churches, most notably two that were promoted by Canon Tom Montgomery of Saint Ninian s, Troon. The first involving Clarks Shoes. Donating old shoes to Clarks and in conjunction with UNICEF, money will be sent to a country of your choice. The other scheme was Toilet Twinning, for a donation of a congregation could twin with a country of their choice to help improve the sanitation for a community. The Congregation would receive a certificate that could then be placed within the toilet facilities of the church Tom urged all to consider these worthwhile schemes. The next Regional Meeting will take place at Maybole for the joint Regional Ascension Day Eucharist. A date has yet to be confirmed for the next business meeting. William Clark-Ferguson (Regional Representative) Are you being served? It would be really helpful, to those on church welcome duty, if members of the congregation took the initiative of offering to take up the elements of bread and wine to the altar. Please, don't be shy about letting the welcomers know that you would be very happy to participate in this part of the Communion service. 14
