A.#$ T# ' S!1"! We continue our readings from the Psalms in Lent, reading today part of Psalm 118, the Psalm Jewish pilgrims sang as they arrived at Jerusalem for the Passover celebration. The words rang in Jesus ears as he entered the Holy City with a meaning only he could fully grasp. The Psalm points us to the meaning of this day and the blessing it offers to our life of faith. T&! 2##()! invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Lord Jesus Christ, on the first Palm Sunday you entered the rebellious city where you were to die. Enter our hearts, we pray, and subdue them to yourself. And as your disciples blessed your coming and spread garments and branches in your way, make us ready to lay at your feet all that we have and are, that we too may bless your coming in the name of the Lord. A.#$ T# ' H' The opening hymn text is by Theodulph in about 820 A.D., and was first used as a Palm Sunday processional hymn. Theodulph was a celebrated theologian whose career began as a monk but later became bishop of Orleans. SeBings of this tune are included in today s voluntaries. The second hymn at the second service was wriben by seventeenth century English cleric and poet Samuel Crossman, and is richly filled with scriptural allusions, including Philippians 2:5-11; John 1:1-18 and 4:8-11; MaBhew 21:9, 8:20, 11:5, Mark 11:10; and Luke 9:58 and 25: The closing hymn is abributed to Henry Hart Milman, one-time dean of St Paul s Cathedral, London. My Song Is Love Unknown Malcolm Archer The text of this anthem is found in the Hymnal, no. 76, stanzas one, two, three and five. The composer is Director of Music at Winchester College, England. Lift Up Your Heads William Mathias This anthem is a seming of Psalm 24:7-10. Mathias was a prominent Welsh composer during the second half of the twentieth century. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, The Lord strong and mighty, And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, The Lord, mighty in bable. That the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory?
