2 W#$' $ K(!) ( H(% W#$' $ *$!%(+ at Kirk in the Hills! We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk welcome! Please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. P!% concerned about children becoming restless in the service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib- and baby chair stands, and the service is relayed on a TV monitor. A,$ T$ % S!(# Today s service centers around the story in Luke s Gospel when Jesus sends out seventy missionaries to proclaim that the kingdom of God has come near. We too are called to go out and we are blessed to live in a nation where we are free to go and serve in the name of Jesus the Christ. However, too often we take our freedom for granted and leave the going and the serving to others. But we can overcome this and embrace the challenge to live into our freedom through the grace of God. Rev. Tres Adams will preach the sermon In Dependence as we prepare to go out to the world to serve in Christʹs name. T $$*(/ +!! invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: God of the covenant, in our baptism you called us to proclaim the coming of your kingdom. Give us courage like you gave the apostles, that we may faithfully witness to your love and peace in every circumstance of life, in the name of Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (Reprinted by permission from The Book of Common Worship, Software Edition, 1993, 1995 Westminster John Knox Press.) A,$ T$ % H'% God of the Ages was wri@en in 1876 for a celebration of the centennial Fourth of July; the tune was composed for this text in O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee was originally titled Walking with God, and was wri@en by Washington Gladden, a nineteenth century Congregational minister known particularly for his writings and sermons on social and civic issues. The tune, while composed for another text, was the deliberate choice of Gladden for his text. O Beautiful for Spacious Skies was wri@en by Katherine Lee Bates, a graduate of Wellesley College where she stayed on as professor of English literature until her death. She was inspired to write this text as a result of visits to the 1893 World s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and to Pike s Peak. 6 S$$, C$''($ H'% A' N$% (Continued from page 5.) His Eye Is on the Sparrow arr. Luigi Zaninelli The text of this Gospel hymn was inspired by MaHhew 6:26 and 10: About this text, its author, Civilla Martin, writes: Early in the spring of 1905, my husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York. We contracted a deep friendship for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. DooliHle true saints of God. Mrs. DooliHle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Her husband was an incurable cripple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheel chair. Despite their afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One day while we were visiting with the DooliHles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them for the secret of it. Mrs. DooliHleʹs reply was simple: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. The beauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin and me. The hymn ʺHis Eye Is on the Sparrowʺ was the outcome of that experience. Why should I feel discouraged, Why should the shadows come, Why should my heart be lonely, And long for heaven and home, When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is he: His eye is on the sparrow, And I know he watches me. Now Let Us All Praise God and Sing I sing because I m happy, I sing because I m free, For his eye is on the sparrow, And I know he watches me. Gordon Young The composer of this anthem served as Director of Music and Organist at First Presbyterian Church, Detroit during the mid-twentieth century, and was well-known as a composer of anthems as well as an organist. This anthem was wrihen in honor of the Rev. Dr. Allan MacLachlan Frew, pastor of First Presbyterian, Detroit during the 1950s and 1960s and the Choir of this congregation. Now let us all praise God and sing Our great Redeemer s praise; That we may all with one accord Our joyful voices raise. Sing Alleluia! Whenever I am tempted, Whenever clouds arise, When songs give place to sighing, When hope within me dies, I draw the closer to him, From care he sets me free; His eye is on the sparrow, And I know he cares for me. All ye servants of the Lord, Praise him for-ever, Sing Jehovah s mighty power, Praise him for-ever. Sing of his righteousness, Praise him for-ever. 6
