1 K H P C (U.S.A.) SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 15, 2017 The New Testament never speaks of Jesus looking for volunteers. Jesus does not recruit volunteers; he calls disciples. A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship

2 Welcome to worship WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please sign the pew pad. Please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service Now, until Ash Wednesday, is the time the Church focuses on the public ministry of Jesus: his preaching, teaching, healing and interacting with the people of his time. Central to his ministry was calling men and women to follow him as his disciples to the end of using their God-given gifts to share his message of saving grace and love. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Lord God, thanks to your divine presence in the world, we have ushered Jesus, Emmanuel, God-with-us, into the world during Advent and Christmas. Now in Epiphany, is our time to hear and heed his call, and become brave and bold disciples of the Light of the World, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. If you have children Childcare is available for infants and children up to age 4 from 8:45-12:30 in the nursery (Abbey 24). Please check in children in the nursery before the service. During our 9:00 a.m. worship hour, children ages 3 through 5 may be checked into Galilee 2 before the service. Following the Word with the Children, during the 9:00 a.m. service, children ages 4-2 nd grade that begin in the service are dismissed for Children s Worship and can be picked up in Galilee 1 (4 yrs.-k) and Galilee 3 (1 st -2 nd grade). Parents concerned about children becoming restless during the service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib and baby chair stands and where you may view the sanctuary service on a large screen. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org under Resources/Prayer Request form. Stephen Ministers are available for personal, confidential prayer in Melrose Chapel after each worship service. Melrose Chapel is located on the left-hand side of the pulpit. Join us for fellowship After the 9:00 a.m. service, we encourage worshippers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee hour and to one of the Christian education classes. Flowers on the sanctuary altar are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Philip M. and Eloys R. Rothwell by Laura and Brian Ambrose. 2 ON THE COVER Celtic Cross Ken Taylor ( ), a life-long Michigan artist, did the most recent line drawing of the altar Celtic cross shown on the cover of the bulletin. From the time he was a child growing up in Detroit, Ken was interested in art. His work has been shown in numerous juried exhibitions and at galleries throughout southeastern Michigan. Inspired by the St. Martin Cross from Iona Abbey in Scotland, Oscar Bach created the celtic cross. A gift from Mr. and Mrs. George Russell, it was placed on the altar in 1958 when the sanctuary was dedicated. The cross is highly adorned with Christian symbols: a harp at the top symbolizes joyful worship and joy in heaven; the Father is depicted with his face obscured by his hand held up in Trinitarian blessing; the crosspiece portrays the Te Deum; the Son is shown with his arms outstretched, reaching out to the whole world, inviting all to worship him; the descending dove represents the Holy Spirit; and the grape and the vine symbolize Holy Communion.

6 MUSIC NOTES About today s hymns Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim was wrieen by the great Methodist hymn writer Charles Wesley as part of a hymn tract series issued for class meetings led by him and his brother, John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. In this tract this hymn appeared with the heading, To be sung in a tumult, and the title of the entire tract (which contained thirty-three hymns) was Hymns for Times of Trouble and Persecution. One certainly wonders what prompted the Wesleys to use such titles. The name Hanover was identified with the tune after George III became king of England; he was king at the time of the American Revolution. Take My Life was wrieen by Frances Ridley Havergal as a hymn of consecration and thanksgiving, about its origins she related to her sister: [On that day] I first saw clearly the blessedness of true consecration. I saw it as a flash of electric light, and what you see you can never unsee. There must be full surrender before there can be full blessedness. The tune Hendon takes its name from a hill located a few miles northeast of St. Paul s Cathedral, London. Here I Am, Lord was wrieen by Daniel SchuEe for the diaconal ordination of some of his Jesuit friends in Berkley, California at Oakland Cathedral. The refrain is based on the call of Isaiah and centers on Isaiah 6: 8, blended with details from the call of Samuel (I Samuel 3: 1-10). About today s choral music My Voice Shalt Thou Hear Joseph Corfe This anthem is a seding of Psalm 5:3. Corfe was born and died in Salisbury, England, where, as a child, he was a chorister in the cathedral and as an adult served as organist and choir master. Also as an adult he was an accomplished singer and teacher of singing. My voice shalt thou hear betimes, O Lord: Early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee, And will look up. I will also come unto Thine house, And I will worship towards Thy holy temple. Commit Your Life to the Lord Liebhold This anthem juxtaposes two texts; the first, Psalm 37: 5, and the second, a stanza of a hymn by Georg Neumark, translated by Catherine Winkworth. The first is initially sung by the full choir, and then continued by the altos, tenors and basses while the sopranos sing the second to the tune Wer nur den lieben GoE (hymn 282). SeDings of this hymn comprise this morning s opening voluntaries. The Neumark text is the third stanza of hymn 282, a hymn of faith and trust in God through all things. While lidle is known about the composer, including his first name, he composed a rather large body of works, including 130 cantatas and 22 motets (a motet is a sacred choral work consisting of several voice parts.) Commit your life to the Lord, And trust Him alway, For He will help you. Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving, Perform thy duties faithfully, And trust His Word, though undeserving, Thou yet shalt find it true for thee. God never yet forsook in need The soul that trusteth Him indeed. (continued on page 11) 6

Your gift of the creation, and the gift of our senses to enjoy your handiwork, gives us joy and delight! We thank you for your love and forgiveness that we might be redeemed and restored people in the name of Jesus. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Knowing that our God shares many good gifts with us, let us ask for forgiveness for those times we have not used them wisely or well. Let us all pray. Merciful and loving God, we have not always been faithful to you. Instead of following your will and your way for us, we have found excuses. We have not always used our gifts to bring in your kingdom. Forgive us for those times we lack faith, vision, and focus. Make us brave and bold disciples always. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen. * Those who are able are invited to stand. 7

11 (continued from page 6) Jubilate Deo MUSIC NOTES Malcolm Archer This anthem is a seding of Psalm 100; the title Jubilate Deo is Latin for words from the opening verse, joyful and Lord. Singing this text is part of Morning Prayer, or Matins, which is one of the two primary non- Eucharistic worship rites of the Church which dates back to the earliest days of the Church, and is even rooted in the worship of the Old Testament era. Singing this text traditionally happens in the liturgy after the reading of the New Testament lesson for the day. Malcolm Archer is Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College, England. O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness and come before His presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord He is God. It is He that hath made us and not we ourselves. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. O go your way into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto him and speak good of His Name. For the Lord is gracious, His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 11
