1 P K C H (U.S.A.) TWENTIETH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 16, 2015 Because Christians understand truth specifically in terms of the name that is, the person of Jesus, truth is about a person and a relationship with person which he has established from his side. 2 2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS Welcome to worship We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service Today we will truly have two distinct worship services. The Garden Service will be a worshipful celebration of this past week s Vacation Bible School. We will have several lessons and the children will lead us in song as we hear about God s has the power! The 11 o clock service will be the Kirk s traditional worship service. We will be taking a closer look at a portion of Jesus farewell discourse with His disciples and the promise that those who believe in Him will have a room in His Father s house. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living You are the beginning and the end of our salvation; grant therefore, O God, that we may be subject to you in fear and trembling and follow wherever you call us to go. Grant that we may constantly call upon you and cast our sorrows upon you, until we have finally escaped all dangers and come to that eternal peace prepared for us by the suffering, death, and resurrection of your only bego$en Son. Amen. Karl Barth, Prayer. Westminster John Knox Press: Lousiville, If you have children Parents concerned about children becoming restless in the sanctuary service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib-and baby-chair stands and where you may view sanctuary services on a large screen. Childcare in the nursery (Abbey 24) is available for infants and children through age 3 from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Please drop off children in the nursery before the service. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org/prayer-request/prayer-request form. Stephen Ministers are available are available for personal, confidential prayer after both Sunday worship services all summer long. After the 9:15 a.m. garden service, you can find a Stephen Minister at the banner located near the red door to the sanctuary from the Fireside patio. After the 11:00 a.m. service, you can meet with a Stephen Minister in Melrose Chapel. Join us for fellowship After the 9:15 a.m. service, we encourage worshippers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee hour. The flowers on the Sanctuary altar are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Loralee Susan Willard by her mother, Cherie Dubats and her brother, Jim Simpson. ON THE COVER Celtic Cross Ken Taylor, a life-long Michigan artist, did the most recent line drawing of the altar Celtic cross shown on the cover of the bulletin. From the time he was a child growing up in Detroit, Ken has been interested in art. His work has been shown in numerous juried exhibitions and at galleries throughout southeastern Michigan. Inspired by the St. Martin Cross from Iona Abbey in Scotland, Oscar Bach created the sterling silver celtic cross. A gift from Mr. and Mrs. George Russell, it was placed on the altar in 1958 when the sanctuary was dedicated. The cross is highly adorned with Christian symbols: a harp at the top symbolizes joyful worship and joy in heaven; the Father is depicted with his face obscured by his hand held up in Trinitarian blessing; the crosspiece portrays the Te Deum; the Son is shown with his arms outstretched, reaching out to the whole world, inviting all to worship him; the descending dove represents the Holy Spirit; and the grape and the vine symbolize Holy Communion.

6 About today s hymns All Things Bright and Beautiful was wrieen by Cecil Frances Humphreys Alexander, a prolific writer of hymns for children during the nineteenth century. She wrote this hymn for the children of her Sunday school class to teach the first phrase of the Apostles Creed, I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. The tune is an English folk melody and is named after Royal Oak, a tree in Boscobel, Shropshire, in which Charles II hid himself during the BaEle of Worcester in The original text for this tune celebrated the restoration of Charles II to the throne. Seek Ye First was wrieen in 1971; the inspiration for this simple song of faith can be traced to the spirit of the 1960s, an era when the author, Karen Lafferty, felt challenged to live what she believed and, as a consequence, left her job as an entertainer to pursue full-time Christian service. In the midst of a personal financial crisis, she aeended a Bible study at her home church where the teaching that night was MaEhew 6:33. Returning home after the study with her faith strengthened, she was inspired to set this Biblical text to music. I Danced in the Morning was wrieen by Sydney Carter, a leader in the church folk song movement of the mid-twentieth century. Its tune, Simple Gifts, comes from the Shaker movement which originated during an English revival in The Shakers were a religious sect which branched off from the Quakers, and were known as Shaker because of their ecstatic behavior during worship services. The Shakers seeled in colonial America and were known for their celibate and communal lifestyle, pacifism and simple living, architecture and furniture. Father, We Praise Thee is aeributed to Gregory the Great and dates from the sixth century. It was originally intended to be sung in worship at sunrise. Gregory is known for the revising of the Roman liturgy and for reforms in church music, and is credited with editing or composing the melodies of the so-called Gregorian chant. Its tune, Christe sanctorum, is of French origin and takes its name from the medieval office hymn, Christe sanctorum, decus angelorum. Thou Art the Way is based on John 14:6; each of the first three stanzas opens with one of Christ s selfdescriptions as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Its tune, Dundee, comes from an early seventeenth century ScoEish Psalter. Take My Life was wrieen while its author, Frances Ridley Havergal, was visiting for five days Areley House in Worcestershire, England, where she prayed for the ten persons living there, some who were Christians and some who were not. In prayer she asked, Lord, give me all in this house. At the conclusion of her visit she felt that all present had been blessed by God. The tune Hendon is named after a hill located a few miles northeast of St. Paul s Cathedral, London. Today s Solo and Choral Music Texts and Notes One Thing Remains Jeremy Riddle, Christa Joy Black and Brian Johnson The authors and composers of this song are active in the contemporary Christian music world, serving as worship leaders at Bethel Church in Redding, California. Higher than the mountains that I face, Stronger than the power of the grave, Constant through the trial and the change, One thing remains. One thing remains. Your love never fails. It never gives up. It never runs out on me. You love never fails. It never gives up. It never runs out on me. Your love never fails. It never gives up. It never runs out on me, your love, your love. On and on and on and on it goes. It overwhelms and satisfies my soul, And I never ever have to be afraid. One thing remains 6 (continued on page 11)

11 (continued from page 6) How Can I Keep from Singing Robert Lowry, arr. Michael Burkhardt The author and composer of the this hymn, Robert Lowry, was a nineteenth century Baptist minister. Michael Burkhardt is Director of Music and the Arts at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Livonia, Michigan and professor of organ at Eastern Michigan University. My life flows on in endless song, Above earth s lamentation, I hear the real though far-off hymn That hails a new creation. Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear the music ringing, It sounds an echo in my soul; How can I keep from singing? I lift my eyes, the cloud grows thin, I see the blue above it And day by day this pathway smooths, Since first I learned to love it. The peace from Love makes fresh my hearts, A song of hope is springing. All things are mine since truth I ve found. How can I keep from singing? Deep River spiritual, arr. Henry Burleigh Henry Burleigh was the grandson of slaves and inherited spirituals from his grandfather, who used to sing them to him. After high school he became a well-established singer in Episcopal churches in his hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania, and went on to enjoy a successful singing career in New York City where he sang in the choir of St. George s Episcopal Church for fifty-two years and the choir of Temple Emmanuel for twenty-five years. His most lasting legacy is his arrangements of spirituals. Deep river, my home is over Jordan, Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into campground. Oh, don t you want to go to that gospel feast, That promised land where all is peace? What if my joys and comforts die, I know that truth is living. What though the darkness round me close? Still truth its light is giving. No storm can shake my inmost calm, While to that rock I m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing? O How Amiable Ralph Vaughan Williams The text of this anthem comes from Psalms 84 and 90 and a hymn by Isaac Wa$s. It, along with the organ voluntaries, is being offered in thanksgiving for the life of John Sco$, Director of Music and Organist of St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue and formerly Director of Music and Organist of St. Paul s Cathedral, London. The preeminent Anglican church music of our time, Dr. Sco$ passed away suddenly this week at the age of 59. He performed in recital here at the Kirk, and both the choirs of St. Thomas Church and St. Paul s Cathedral have been heard in concert here. O how amiable are thy dwellings: thou Lord of hosts! My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord: My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young: Even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: They will be always praising thee. The glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us: Prosper thou the work of our hands upon us. O prosper thou our handywork. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. 11
