1 Kirk in the Hills A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship S, F 10, 2013 T!" "!# L" If you read history you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. C.S. Lewis Norman M. Pritchard, Pastor William L. Adams III, Associate Pastor Carol A. Tate, Associate Pastor James F. Anderson, Pastor Emmeritus Glenn A. Miller, Director of Music & Organist Dennis N. Curry, Associate Director of Music & Carillonneur

2 2 W&'"(!" K)!# H&& W&'"(!" *"#+ at Kirk in the Hills! We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk welcome! Please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. P! concerned about children becoming restless in the service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib- and babychair stands and the service is relayed on a TV monitor. A"! T" S/' Today is Transfiguration Sunday as the paraments and some of the music reflects. Carol Tate was scheduled to preach today on the Transfiguration, but her husband, K.C., has taken ill and she needs to be with him. Tres Adams will be preaching on the Parable of the Sower as told in Luke 8:4-15. Together we will explore Jesus mission to the world and how we as followers of Christ are called to take part in this mission. We will also joyfully celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. T# "&&"* + invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Faithful God, you have appointed us to your witnesses, to be light that shines in the world. Let us not hide the bright hope you have given us, but tell everyone of your love, revealed in Jesus Christ the Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (From the Book of Common Worship, 1993 Westminster John Knox Press.) T# &"* "!# '! &! are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Robert Gustafson, her wonderful husband, by his loving wife, Sheri Gustafson. 6 Beautiful Savior A!#( TL! Q N"! arr. F. Melius Christiansen This anthem is an arrangement of a tune which first appeared in a collection of folk songs from Silesia. The text has been traced to a Jesuit community in Münster in the seventeenth century. F. Melius Christiansen was the founder of the St. Olaf Choir of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota. Fair are the meadows, fairer the woodlands, Robed in flowers of blooming spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes our sorrowing spirit sing. Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, Now and for evermore be thine. Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies T. Frederick H. Candlyn This text is by Charles Wesley, author of as many as 6,500 hymns. T. Frederick H. Candlyn was an English-born organist who spent the majority of his career in New York state, first at St. Paul s Church in Albany and then at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York City. Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only Light, Sun of righteousness, arise! Triumph o er the shades of night: Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn Unaccompanied by Thee; Joyless is the day s return, Till Thy mercy s beams I see; Till they inward light impart, Glad my eyes and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine! Pierce the gloom of sin and grief! Fill me, Radiancy Divine; ScaLer all my unbelief; More and more Thyself display, Shining to the perfect day. Amen. 6
