Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and sca&er there Thy cheerful beams. Saint Augustine A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship
2 Welcome to worship WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please sign the pew pad. Please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service On Palm Sunday, the joy of welcoming turns to the awe of worshiping. While most of the people did not know exactly what was happening, they understood enough to know that Jesus was coming and that the world was about to change forever. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Dear God, it seems like Lent has been a blur this year. The cold weather has made it seem more like winter, and spring somehow snuck up on me and now it s almost Easter! Help me today to begin Holy Week with a sense of purpose and focus, so that I may enter into the praise, the passion, and the glory of our Lord Jesus the true Christ. Hosanna! If you have children Parents concerned about children becoming restless in the sanctuary service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib-and baby-chair stands and where you may view either the 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. sanctuary service on a large screen. Childcare in the nursery (Abbey 24) is available for infants and children through age 3 from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Please drop off children in the nursery before the service. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org/prayer-request/prayer-request form. Stephen Ministers are available for personal, confidential prayer in Melrose Chapel after each worship service. Melrose Chapel is located on the left-hand side of the pulpit. Join us for fellowship After the 9:00 a.m. service, we encourage worshippers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee hour and to one of the Christian education classes. ON THE COVER John Mielstadt has been doing Christian art, since the early 1980s. His works have been featured in many Christian and secular art shows, including ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY started as a charcoal pencil sketch, which was scanned into a computer and digitally altered. Itʹs done with a minimal amount of detail to accentuate the subject s simplicity. John says that only the self sacrificing Lord would choose, out of all the possible forms of a King s entry into Jerusalem, to ride on a donkey and he, as an artist, can appreciate the enormity of the statement Jesus made with such a humble entrance. 2

He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn of the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. 6 MUSIC NOTES About today s hymns All Glory, Laud and Honor was wrien by Theodulph in about 820 A.D., and was first used as a Palm Sunday processional hymn. Theodulph was a celebrated theologian whose career began as a monk but later became bishop of Orleans. Seings of this tune are included in today s voluntaries. Hosanna, Loud Hosanna was wrien by Jennee Threlfall. Despite having difficult circumstances in her life she was orphaned at an early age and an accident left her an invalid she bore these challenges with grace and a positive aitude, and devoted her life to writing poems and hymns which reflected her sweet, childlike spirit. This particular hymn was wrien when she was afflicted with a serious illness; its joy and hope takes on even greater significance and meaning for us as we bear this in mind. My Song Is Love Unknown was wrien by seventeenth century English cleric and poet Samuel Crossman, and is richly filled with scriptural allusions, including Philippians 2:5-11; John 1:1-18 and 4:8-11; Mahew 21:9, 8:20, 11:5, Mark 11:10; and Luke 9:58 and 25: Ride On, Ride On in Majesty is aributed to Henry Hart Milman, one-time dean of St. Paul s Cathedral, London, who was also a successful playwright, author and Oxford University professor. While this hymn utilizes vivid poetic language which was common in Milman s time, it nonetheless points to the great drama that is about to unfold during the days of Holy Week. Anthem texts and notes Ride On Now, O King! Helen Kemp The composer of this anthem is regarded as the pre-eminent leader and beloved sage of the American children s choir movement since the early 1950 s. Christ Jesus entered Jerusalem; Ride on now, O King, without scepter or crown, Not proudly but humbly rode He, Ride into the hearts of mankind! Upon a brown donkey, a lowly beast, Rule thou our lives with love and peace, Christ rode in humility. Ride on now, O King divine! Hosanna we sing to Christ our King! Hosanna we sing Hosanna we sing to our Lord! Hosanna, Hosanna Natalie Sleeth Natalie Sleeth possessed a unique gift in composing and writing Christian songs for children which express simply the message of the Gospel. Hosanna, Hosanna, O blessed is He Be glad this day, let every heart rejoice! Who comes now among us, our Savior to be, Prepare His way with heart and soul and voice. A sign of God s glory to you and to me; He comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna, Hosanna, with joy let us sing; A message of love to the earth He will bring; Now offer Him welcome and hail Him the King, He comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna, Hosanna, now greet Him with praise, In joyful thanksgiving our song let us raise, And follow His Truth for the rest of our days, He comes in the name of the Lord! 6 (continued on page 11)

11 (continued from page 6) Ingrediente Domino MUSIC NOTES George Malcolm This is a se&ing of an early Palm Sunday processional text; the composer was Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, London, during the mid-twentieth century. Lift Up Your Heads William Mathias This anthem is a se&ing of Psalm 24:7-10. Mathias was a prominent Welsh composer during the second half of the twentieth century. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, That the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord, mighty in bale. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Hosanna to the Son of David Orlando Gibbons This anthem is a se&ing of Ma&hew 21:9 (adapted) and is composed in the polyphonic style, which means that various textual and melodic motives are sung in a sort of musical conversation between each of the voice parts. This technique ingeniously creates a well-organized cacophony, perhaps here to reflect the commotion of the crowd greeting Jesus as he entered Jerusalem. Only during the words Peace in heaven does the composer have the voice parts singing together, creating order ( peace ) out of the chaos. Orlando Gibbons was one of the most important English composers of the early seventeenth century, and served as organist of the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey. Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Blessed be the King of Israel, blessed be the Kingdom. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest places. NOTES 11
