2 2 W$&'$ K( $ H# W$&'$ )# at Kirk in the Hills! We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk welcome! Please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. P$# concerned about children becoming restless in the service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib- and babychair stands, and the service is relayed on a TV monitor. A+ T # S$.&$ We come to the sanctuary today from a world too familiar with violence and too often forced to grieve the senseless loss of innocent life. As we have encountered the pain and suffering inflicted upon people as they went about their lives, today in the sanctuary we are offered the 23 rd Psalm, which speaks with faith and assurance about the God who is with us in ʺthe valley of the shadow of deathʺ and who offers protection ʺin the presence of my enemies.ʺ In the wake of the Boston atrocity, will we allow this Psalm to do its healing and challenging work in us? T $!)/ $ invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: O God of peace, you brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great shepherd of the sheep. By the blood of your eternal covenant, make us complete in everything good that we may do your will, and work among us all that is well-pleasing in your sight, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Reprinted by permission from The Book of Common Worship, Software Edition, 1993, 1995 Westminster John Knox Press.) A+ T # H'# The opening and closing hymns are paraphrases of Psalm 23. The opening hymn was wri@en by Henry Williams Baker for inclusion in Hymns Ancient and Modern (1868); Baker served as chair of this hymnal s editorial commi@ee. The tune is of Irish origin, and is named for St. Columba, who brought Christianity to Ireland. The middle hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 103; its author, Henry Francis Lyte, was a gifted writer, winning three poetry prizes while a student at Trinity College, Dublin. Ordained in 1815, he served a number of small parishes. The tune was composed by John Goss, organist of St. Paul s Cathedral, London, for this text. The closing hymn comes from the Sco0ish Psalter (1650); the tune was composed by Jessie Seymour Irvine and is named for the village in northeast Scotland where she wrote it while her father was pastor. T $!)$# $ #& are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Charles Cooper by his wife, Alice and family. A&$# scheduled to serve at the 9:00 a.m. worship service are: Georgia Artzberger, Jarrett Black, Tristan Davis, Will Libcke, Blake Lucas, Madeline Meek, Elyse VanderWoude, Jenna Yousif. At 11:00 a.m. are: Emily Abbott, Julia Briggs, Jean Klochko-Bull, Austin Glover, Courtney Kezlarian, James MacKenzie, Megan MacKenzie, Clark Meek. Help us to know your love and care, and through our worship help us to renew our trust. Forgive us, we pray, when we fail to trust you, either because we are too busy, too eager to have our own way, or too gripped by fear and uncertainty. 6 A $' T$O# R N$# My Shepherd Will Supply My Need American folk tune, arr. Virgil Thomson This anthem is a simple arrangement by mid-twentieth century American composer Virgil Thomson of an American folk tune. Thomson was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and at an early age displayed an extraordinary intelligence which ultimately led him to entering Harvard University followed by studies and living in Paris, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger and forged relationships with such prominent cultural figures as Ernest Hemingway, E. E. Cummings, Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, Orson Welles, Jean Cocteau, and Gertrude Stein. After his time in Paris he settled in New York City, where he served as music critic for the Herald Tribune, one of the city s leading newspapers. My Shepherd will supply my need. Jehovah is his Name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed Beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back When I forsake his ways. He leads me for his mercy s sake In paths of truth and grace. When I walk through the shades of death Thy presence is my stay. One word of thy supporting breath Drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, Doth still my table spread. My cup with blessings overflows, Thine oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God A@end me all my days. O may thy house be my abode And all my work be praise. There would I find a se@led rest, While others go and come. No more a stranger or a guest But like a child at home. Jubilate Deo Benjamin Bri0en This year marks the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, who is regarded as a central figure of 20th-century British classical music. Brittenʹs interests as a composer were wide -ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as operas, orchestral, sacred and secular choral, solo vocal, chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a renowned pianist and conductor. This setting of the canticle Jubilate Deo (Psalm 100) was composed in 1961 for St. George s Chapel, Windsor, at the request of the Duke of Edinburgh. O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; Serve the Lord with gladness And come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: It is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, And into his courts with praise. Be thankful unto him, and speak good of his name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: And his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: World without end. Amen. 6
