2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS About today s service The service of Maundy Thursday begins the mysteries of the ancient Triduum, the Three Sacred Days. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the sacred days that culminate in the celebration of Easter, the Day of Resurrection. Following the sharing of communion on Maundy Thursday, the chancel is stripped of paraments and the cross is covered. These actions suggest the stripping of Jesus by the soldiers prior to his crucifixion and the abandonment of Jesus by his disciples. These actions, like the darkness that is a part of the Good Friday service, symbolize the humiliation of Jesus, the consequences of sin, and the desolation of the cross. Traditionally, a portion of Psalm 22 is read during the stripping of the chancel. We depart in silence, awash in the impending sorrow this night recalls when the disciples departed the last time from sharing a meal with their Lord and ours. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: On this night of remembrance, gracious God, help us to see in Christ s self-giving love how deeply, truly, and fully we are loved. Let this be the moment we understand who and how Christ is calling us to be in the world for others. Amen. ON THE COVER Jyoti Sahi, a Christian artist-theologian who lives in North Bangalore, is interested in the relationship of art to spirituality and how it can connect different faith traditions. He gave us permission to use this work for our Maundy Thursday service this evening. In his Christ Washing the Feet of Peter, Sahi focuses on the culturally unacceptable view of Jesus as the guru who washes the feet of his disciples. It is the disciples who must wash the feet of the guru. Christ s example leads us to become a community of self-giving, self-effacing love that seeks the well-being of others all others. Jyoti places the scene within the image of a flame from an Indian lamp, reminding us that to be truly enlightened to have the mind of Christ results in the ministry we do as a community on behalf of others. 2

All offerings, whether made in the worship service or outside of it, are part of our worship of God and are used to support the Kirk s ministry here and in other parts of the world.
