2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS About today s service The service of Maundy Thursday begins the mysteries of the ancient Triduum, the Three Sacred Days. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the sacred days that culminate in the celebration of Easter, the Day of Resurrection. Following the sharing of communion on Maundy Thursday, the chancel is stripped of paraments and the cross is covered. These actions suggest the stripping of Jesus by the soldiers prior to his crucifixion and the abandonment of Jesus by his disciples. These actions, like the darkness that is a part of the Good Friday service, symbolize the humiliation of Jesus, the consequences of sin, and the desolation of the cross. Traditionally, a portion of Psalm 22 is read during the stripping of the chancel. We depart in silence, awash in the impending sorrow this night recalls when the disciples departed the last time from sharing a meal with their Lord and ours. Prayer for the evening Merciful God, as we gather to remember the last night of our Lord before His passion, fill our hearts and our minds with your Holy Spirit. As we remember His love, remember us to our faith community. As we remember His sacrifice, remember us to your mission in Christ. As we remember His washing away our sins, remember us to your body in Christ our Lord. We pray in the name of our loving Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. David Paynter was the first Sri Lankan to have a modern art education in England and Italy. The artist absorbed what was of value not only from academic school but also from art history, eastern traditions and contemporary artists and then evolved this into his own sensitive artistic vision. 2
