2 W%&' K#( # H#%%) W%&' *)#" at Kirk in the Hills! We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk welcome! Please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. P) concerned about children becoming restless in the service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib- and baby chair- stands, and the service is relayed on a TV monitor. A T ) S.#& In arranging his gospel Ma-hew has gathered much of Jesus teaching into blocks of material. The first, and major, block is known as The Sermon on the Mount and opens with words of grace and assurance which we read today. We call these verses The Beatitudes and they are among the best known and loved sayings of Jesus. And yet their meaning is challenging: what does it mean to proclaim blessing on people who are poor in spirit, meek, mourning or persecuted? Members of the Kirk-sponsored Boy Scout Troop 1036 will participate on this Scout Sunday by reading today s scripture. T %%*#/ " invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Holy God, you confound the worldʹs wisdom in giving your kingdom to the lowly and the pure in heart. Give us such a hunger and thirst for justice and perseverance in striving for peace, that by our words and deeds the world may see the promise of your kingdom, revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (Reprinted by permission from The Book of Common Worship, Software Edition, 1993, 1995 Westminster John Knox Press.) H' N) Sing Praise to God is of German origin and was first published in 1675 with the title Hymn of Thanksgiving. Its author, Johann Jacob SchüD, was a lawyer and as a churchman was sympathetic in the pietistic movement of the Lutheran Church. O for a World was wri-en by Sister Miriam Therese Winter in Dr. Winter is professor of liturgy, worship and spirituality at Hartford Seminary, Connecticut, and is a member of the Medical Mission Sisters, Philadelphia. Our closing hymn, Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit was wri-en by Carolyn Winfrey Gille-e, co-pastor of Limestone Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware, and author of many hymns. Carolyn has volunteered as a reading tutor for inner-city children with UrbanPromise in Wilmington and her daughter worked in 2011 with UrbanPromise in Honduras. In appreciation of permission to use this hymn, the Kirk has made a donation to UrbanPromise Honduras. We too would join the worship that honors you and in your praise rejoice. And yet we know that we must ask for your forgiveness for we are afraid to trust you and believe that you are with us in our lives. We hesitate to obey your commands and bear witness to your love.
