When we gather at Mass, we pray for others and with one another. How can we take this example from church to our homes and pray always? Consider buying a blank book or journal as your family s book of prayer. Each day write a prayer of thanks, intercession, praise or petition. Let every time you think of a friend, family member or co-worker be a prayer of thanks for that person s place in your life.

Games are basic BINGO. No cover charge will be collected. Cards are 50 cents each with winnings split 50/50. Final game is $1.00 per card with winner take all. Friday, August 11, is the date and the VFW Lodge is the place for the 2017 Partnered Parish Picnic at 5:00 PM. This is a partnered parish event! St. Mary Holy Name Society News The next meeting of the St. Mary Holy Name Society will be held on Sunday, July 9, at 8:30 AM, in the Conference Room. All members are encouraged to attend! New members are always welcome! Annual Book Sale Peoples Library is now collecting gently used books for its annual book sale, July Books may be dropped off at the New Kensington or Lower Burrell branches, and barrels are also available for collection at area grocery stores and post offices. Items accepted include hardbacks and paperbacks in good condition, and recent magazines, CD s and DVD s. We especially are interested in recent textbooks, published since We will not collect reference materials such as dictionaries or encyclopedias. Thank you for your continued support. Congratulations 2017 Parish Youth Ministry Honorees Each year, the Diocese of Greensburg holds a Parish Youth Honors Liturgy recognizing youth who live the Catholic faith in their personal lives, their relationships and in their service to the parish, community and Diocese. These young people have been identified by their pastor, parochial vicar or leader in youth ministry as a young person whose Catholic life can be an example to other young men and women. The honorees from and St. Mary Parishes are: Haley Coscarelli, Thomas Klawinski, Benjamin Staniszewski - David Kvortek, Christopher O Sullivan, Lucas Reed - St. Mary of Czestochowa Bishop Edward C. Malesic will celebrate a Eucharistic Liturgy on Sunday, July 9, at 3:00 PM at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg, to recognize these young people. Please consider joining in this celebration honoring our youth. A reception will follow Mass. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning Charles Carroll of Carrolltown a defiant come and get me if you dare postscript aimed at the British. Carroll s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.
