2 ANNOUNCEMENTS Please join us for coffee in Snell Hall in the Cathedral Centre after the 9:00 and 11:00am services. The Twilight Recital today at 4:00pm features organist Manuel Piazza. Today marks the final Sunday of Manuel s tenure as our Organ Scholar. Since September 2017, Manuel has been a vital part of the musical life at St. James, from playing at Sunday Services and recitals, to conducting the choir, page-turning, and supporting the music department. Manuel will be returning to UofT for his undergrad, continuing as Bevan Organ Scholar at Trinity College and co-organist for the 9:00pm Sunday mass at St. Michael s Cathedral Basilica. Join us for a special farewell cake today after the 11:00am service in Snell Hall. The Rev d Leigh Kern is on vacation until Thursday, September 6. The Grief Recovery Support Group begins on Sunday, September 16 for eight weeks. This group is for the time when the first stages of shock and loss have passed and you are trying to figure out how to integrate the changes that this experience has brought to your life. 4 LOOKING AHEAD First Day of Sunday School for Fall 2018 Sunday, September 9 at the 11:00am Service Children (5-12) are invited to join Sunday School, during which we sing songs, explore a reading from scripture, get creative, and pray together! For more information or to register please Andrew at akuhl@stjamescathedral.ca. The York Group tours the McMichael Canadian Art Collection Thursday, October 11 from 12:00-3:00pm. The day will include transportation and a 1-hour guided tour of the gallery. Reservations must be made by Thursday, September 13 with Wendy at the front desk. No lunch is provided for this event. The York Group will cover the cost of admission and transportation and will accept a donation towards the cost. We will meet inside the Cathedral, and the shuttle bus will depart at 12:00noon. BARTHOLOMEW, REGENT PARK 509 Dundas St E, East of Parliament A ministry in collaboration with St. James Cathedral Paradise Lost Reading Group: During the summer months St. Bart s is hosting a reading group studying this major work of the 17th century poet, John Milton. The group meets on Thursday evenings, 7:00-9:00pm, and is led by Philip Benmore, one of our divinity students. All are welcome. 5 MUSIC Robert Busiakiewicz is always happy to hear from potential members of the Choirs of St. James Cathedral, and welcomes inquiries to his office via Music Note For twenty years Herbert Howells wrote little Anglican liturgical music, but when he was asked to stand in for an absent organist, he was inspired by his reacquaintance with choral services. As a result, he wrote his Mass Setting for King s College, Cambridge, Collegium Regale (1944), heard at the 11:00am Eucharist today. After this composition Howells wrote myriad anthems and service music, establishing himself as a composer of church music and as a worthy successor to his teacher, Charles Villiers Stanford, who composed the Canticles to be sung at Evensong today. The Evensong anthem will be Balfour-Gardiner s best-known work Evening Hymn (1908), a setting of the compline hymn Te lucis ante terminum. Listen for the lush romanticism in this music, the substantial organ part, and the different moods of the music that reflect the moods of the text. Although Gardiner destroyed many of his works, we are fortunate that this anthem survived. Listen again to the choir on our YouTube channel or SoundCloud page. It is a movement of Guatemalan Indigenous women that trains members in agriculture and leadership skills. Madre Tierra members negotiated with the government after the Civil War to help reintegrate returned refugees, supporting their land claims and resettlement needs. PWRDF has partnered with them since Members learn the value of fresh, sustainable food, nurture home gardens and volunteer as facilitators of the program, passing on lessons learned for a healthier life.
