2 ANNOUNCEMENTS Please join us for coffee in Snell Hall in the Cathedral Centre after the 9:00 and 11:00am services. The Twilight Recital today at 4:00pm features Robert Dixon. Circles of Support We are seeking volunteers for the FAITH+HUB s Circles of Support project. In this client-directed initiative, small teams of volunteers support a vulnerable individual by walking with them as they seek to grow toward a positive future. Volunteers must be able to commit one hour every two weeks for nine months (concluding in November - please note new end date), including the entire summer. The training date is Saturday, March 9. If you are interested, please Outreach Program Coordinator Kathy Biasi at kbiasi@stjamescathedral.ca. The Vicar is on vacation from Monday, February 11 returning on Tuesday, February 19. Subsequently, Scripture Circle is cancelled this Thursday (February 14). The Rev d Leigh Kern has accepted a position with the Diocese of Toronto as Coordinator of Indigenous Ministries and Reconciliation Animator. Please join us for a celebration and farewell after the 11:00am service on Sunday, February 17. A Pre-Vestry Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 20 from 6:30-8:00pm in the Cathedral Centre. The meeting is an opportunity to learn more about the 2019 budget and 2018 financial audit statements. Last year s blessed palm crosses and branches may be brought to the Cathedral and placed in the baskets provided. They will be burned and the ashes used in the Ash Wednesday liturgies on March 6. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper We are seeking volunteers for our annual Pancake Supper. We are looking for individuals to help with set-up, serving and clean-up from 4:30-8:30pm on Tuesday, March 5. Friday s reception will include prayers by elders and Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders; sacred music; and interactive art activities. The exhibit will be open to the public in the Cathedral until Friday, March 1.

Those listed are entitled to vote at the elections for the ensuing year. Additions or modifications can be made to the list. Financial statements and Vestry Reports will be available on Sunday, February 17. I Believe...The Road of Faith (Catechism Course) Thursdays beginning March 7 6:00pm Cathedral Centre This course is intended for those seeking baptism and those further along the road who want to reconnect with their faith through confirmation, re-affirmation, or reception into the Anglican community. This year s course explores the role the traditional Creeds play in an active, lively faith, alongside a study of Rowan Williams book Tokens of Trust. MUSIC Robert Busiakiewicz is always happy to hear from potential members of the Choirs of St. James Cathedral, and welcomes inquiries to his office via dom@stjamescathedral.ca. Music Note The words Holy, Holy, Holy written in Latin across our high altar cloth are words which are called out by the Seraphim. These creatures described in our first reading from the book of Isaiah are awe inspiring angels with six wings. Composers have sought to represent this cry of the Seraphim in many ways throughout history. Their imaginings have varied from genteel cooings to unbridled exultations. Francis Poulenc s account as sung at 11:00am begins as a joyful flurry of E major, before unleashing the lofty peals of Hosanna on an ecstatic high B towards the end of the piece. At Choral Evensong today, the anthem is composed by Einojuhani Rautavaara, one of the greatest Finnish composers, who lived from What makes his Psalm of Invocation so particularly arresting is the unusual use of the vocal glissando: a slide from the lower parts of the voice to the higher while asking God to Hear our prayer in striking supplication. 5 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR WARDENS Parish Selection Committee: Update and a Time for Reflection Now that the Parish Profile is up on the website (stjamescathedral.ca/parish-profile), clergy have until February 28, 2019 to apply to the Bishop of Toronto for the position of Rector/Dean of St. James Cathedral. Your Parish Selection Committee (PSC) continues to meet during this period, formulating first and second interview questions and assessment criteria. Approximately mid-march, the PSC will meet with Bishop Andrew to receive and review names of qualified clergy applicants. Following this meeting, first interviews will be arranged. The desired goal is to have the first set of interviews completed before Easter. As the PSC progresses, we promise to keep you updated. Fulfilling our Spiritual Needs At the beginning of each meeting, the PSC starts with prayer, followed by a time of reflection, often a scripture reading. At one of our last meetings, we reflected on a poem suggested by one of the PSC members - The Dash by Linda Ellis. This poem was included in the Memorial Booklet distributed at the funeral service for former Cathedral churchwarden Janet Hogan.
