Welcome to all those who are joining us for the Caribbean Carnival Closing Service today at 4:30pm. The ReGeneration Bible Study meets next week (Sunday, August 19) after the 11:00am service in the Second Floor Kitchen of the Cathedral Centre. Newcomers in their 20s and 30s are welcome to join. Light lunch is provided. Quarter Peal The bellringers will be offering a Quarter Peal today after the 11:00am service. Vacation Notices The Dean is on vacation, returning Monday, August 20. Robert Busiakiewicz, Director of Music, is on vacation from Monday, August 13 through Wednesday, August 22. The Grief Recovery Support Group begins on Sunday, September 16, running for eight weeks. This group is for the time when the first stages of shock and loss have passed and you are trying to figure out how to integrate the changes that this experience has brought to your life. If you are interested, please contact Parish Nurse Lanadee at llampman@stjamescathedral.ca. A Special Meeting of Vestry will take place on Sunday, September 16 after the 11:00am service to elect the members of the Parish Selection Committee. In a year of unprecendented gun violence, it is our call as the Cathedral to hold in our prayers all those who have died or were wounded in this manner. Over the next few months, we will continue to hold them in our prayers and strive to create peace in our communities. This week we pray for: Jenas Nyarko, Patrick McKenna, and Dalbert Allison.

4 MUSIC Robert Busiakiewicz is always happy to hear from potential members of the Choirs of St. James Cathedral, and welcomes inquiries to his office via Music Note In 1623 a Jesuit priest called Friedrich Spee, living in the North Rhine-Westphalia, composed a simple hymn tune for his congregation entitled Lasst Uns Erfreuen. Some two hundred and ninety years later, a composer of German descent, Gustavus Von Holst decided to write a choral anthem which explored many creative possibilities of that tune for an English choral society. Over a century later, this Sunday August 12 at 4:30pm the Choir of St. James Cathedral in Toronto will be offering these notes which have undertaken such a long journey through history. Our music at 11:00am is written by two living composers, Arthur Wills and our Director of Music, Robert Busiakiewicz. Wills Missa Eliensis was composed in 1960 shortly after he was appointed organist at Ely Cathedral and holds a debt of harmonic invention to the jazz idiom, as does the communion motet. Ego Sum Panis Vitae is one of seven settings of the great I Am sayings from the Gospel of John and was composed in FLU EXHIBIT A special exhibit is taking place in October to mark the 100th Anniversary of the flu pandemic. Considered the worst epidemic since the plague of the 14th century, recent research is now showing that mortality of the 1918/19 flu epidemic could be as high as 100 million. Yet it has been all but forgotten. One in six households here in Canada were affected, and it killed more Canadians in 12 months than the entire four years of the Great War. Was your family affected? Were they living here in Canada at the time, or had they yet to immigrate? The Archives and Museum Committee is collecting stories of families touched by the flu epidemic wherever they may have been living at the time. If your family has a story to tell of how they were affected and would like to share and become a part of the research being undertaken, you are asked to contact Nancy Mallett at or archives@stjamescathedral.ca.

Tonight s service commemorates the closing of the Caribbean Carnival. Next Sunday, August 19 features the Diocesan Girls Choir School, singing the 4:00pm Twilight Recital and Evensong at 4:30pm. We especially invite you to attend Evensong on Sunday September 23rd which marks Dean Andrew s last service at the Cathedral before he is ordained as the Coadjutor Bishop of Toronto.
