The Light of Advent Shines at St. James Cathedral Today is the start of Advent, the first season of the Christian Church year leading up to Christmas. Advent means coming, a season of preparation for the coming of The Light of Jesus. The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it, John 1:5 The early Christians spent these days in penance, prayer and fasting to prepare for the celebration. This season we thank you for allowing St. James Cathedral to be a beacon and witness of the Light of God. Through your Time, Talent and Treasure we are able to serve and share the Light with the hungry, the marginalized, the weary and the poor, as well as with our neighbours throughout the community, diocese, and all with whom we come in contact. During this Advent season, we ask that you renew your commitment to ensure that St. James can continue as a reflection of God s Light. We ask for your support, where possible, through your presence in our midst in worship, in community, in volunteering and in your financial support. As you receive our letter, we ask that you prayerfully consider how the Cathedral shines as God s Light in the darkness, and how you might contribute to its physical plant, ministries and operational costs. With your renewed and continuing support, the important ministries of this amazing Cathedral will thrive and the Light so brightly shining within will not be disrupted. Blessings, A MESSAGE FROM YOUR WARDENS Jayne & Don (wardens@stjamescathedral.ca)
6 MUSIC Music Note Our annual Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols, held today at 4:30pm contains a wide variety of music for choir, organ and congregation. The service begins with the Advent Prose, an ancient plainsong melody which has the refrain of Drop down ye heavens from above. The choir then sings one of the O Antiphons, a portion of the book of Isaiah, to music by Bob Chilcott which includes improvised music for the Sopranos and Altos. Interspersed between familiar seasonal hymns, we have another 20th Century work by the Finnish composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara. His Psalm of Invocation is visceral in its gradual build up from the murmured utterances of the Basses before an outburst by the full choir which is marked by a large glissando (or full slide up an octave). As the choir and altar party make their way up the nave, eventually we come to a portion of a mass written by John Tavener for the choir of Wells Cathedral in This unsettling Benedictus contains eerie intervals which are sung by two choirs at slightly different times, creating a blurred effect of beguiling harmony. This gives way to a heart-warming setting of Robert Herrick s poem, The Best of Rooms, by American composer and former Harvard professor, Randall Thompson. By the time the choir reaches the stalls, we move back musically to the 18th Century and the immortal work of J.S. Bach in the famous organ-led extract from his Cantata BWV 140, Wachet Auf. This is followed by an a cappella masterpiece by William Byrd in his urgent Vigilate which depicts the times of day when the Lord might arrive, from the serene passage in the middle of the night, while you sleep, to the rambunctious at cock-crow. As the story of the Annunciation reaches its climax, the choir reaches the High Altar and sings the song of Mary from the Gospel of Luke - a stark minimalist setting by one of the greatest living composers: Arvo Pärt. Listen to the Choir online at soundcloud.com/sjctoronto ST. BARTHOLOMEW, REGENT PARK 509 Dundas St E, East of Parliament A ministry in collaboration with St. James Cathedral Winter is here! Donations of winter hats, scarves, gloves or mittens, and especially of clean, unworn socks will be gratefully received at St. Bart s. These will be distributed as needed among the guests of the St. Bart s outreach and food ministries.
