Coffee and refreshments will be provided. PWRDF Christmas Cards will also be available during the ministry fair. The requested donation is $20 for a pack of 12 cards. The proceeds from these cards support the great work of the Primate s World Relief and Development Fund. Congratulations to parishioner Sarah McDonald ODT, whose 5-year term of office as Honorary Lay Secretary of Synod ended last week. Sarah was thanked and presented with a gift at Diocesan Synod in recognition and gratitude of her service. Christmas Cards for Drop-In Guests We are requesting donations of any unused Christmas cards and stamps for our Drop-In guests. Please drop off your donations at the Cathedral Centre Reception. Tuesday Drop-In will be open both Christmas Day and New Year s Day this year and we are looking for volunteers to help out. The Crèches from Across the World exhibit this year will take a historical perspective to the culture of the crèche. This year, a Catholic Church in Kleinberg has offered 20 crèches from their collection, and others are coming from private collections. 3 In a year of unprecendented gun violence, it is our call as the Cathedral to hold in our prayers all those who have died or were wounded in this manner. Evensong with Primates from the Anglican Communion Wednesday, November 28 at 5:00pm The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Primates of the Americas are gathering in Toronto and will be attending this special Choral Evensong, which is open to the public. Join us for the service and in welcoming these very special guests to our Cathedral and our city. (A primate is the most senior bishop or archbishop of one of the churches of the Anglican Communion.) An Advent Procession of Lessons & Carols Sunday, December 2 at 4:30pm The Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols originated in the chapel of King s College, Cambridge in The appointed lessons from scripture recount God s act of creation, humanity s fall, and God s promise of a Messiah, presented in a flowing format that allows the scriptures and songs to speak for themselves. Held the evening of the first Sunday in Advent, this service is a wonderful way to begin the season of preparation for Christmas. The Word Made Flesh: An Advent Lecture Series Wednesday, December 5, Wednesday December 12, Wednesday December 19 This series will explore spiritual, historical, and liturgical insights into the sacrament of Holy Communion in the Book of Common Prayer tradition of the Anglican Church. Jesse Billett is an animated and passionate theologian from the University of Toronto; join us to learn and have your own spirituality deepened.

Open Sunday to Thursday afternoons from 12:30 to 4:30pm or by appointment (Contact Nancy Mallett at or archives@stjamescathedral.ca) A MESSAGE FROM YOUR WARDENS With the Joy of Openness Comes Certain Precautions We are fortunate to be worshipping in a beautiful Cathedral that is home to a vibrant downtown parish. St. James seeks to extend Christian hospitality to all visitors, while remaining a comfortable spiritual home to the congregation and those who wish to worship. Thanks largely to the generosity of parishioners, past and present, the cathedral remains open seven days a week, providing 27 worship services. Tourists, the marginalized, and people who live or work in the neighbourhood all take advantage of our open doors to participate in daily worship, appreciate our stained-glass windows, listen to glorious music or take a moment for silent meditation. However, with the joy of openness comes certain precautions. Although your personal comfort and safety are vitally important to our Wardens, Sidespersons and Sextons, the Cathedral is a public and open space. Please be aware of your personal belongings, and do not leave them unattended in the Cathedral or Cathedral Centre. Likewise, you are always welcome to bring your questions and concerns to the attention of the Wardens or Sidespersons on duty. They are there to assist you. 6 MUSIC Robert Busiakiewicz is always happy to hear from potential members of the Choirs of St. James Cathedral, and welcomes inquiries to his office via Music Note Healey Willan, affectionately known as the dean of Canadian composers, wrote 14 settings of the mass during his tenure as director of music at the church of St. Mary Magdalene in Toronto. The young Willan immigrated to Canada at the age of 33, having served a number of parishes in London UK, at the turn of the 20th Century. The communion motet at 11:00am this Sunday was composed for the choir of St. James Cathedral, Chicago, and its conductor, Leo Sowerby, in Our volunteer Parish Choir will be singing Fauré s Cantique de Jean Racine, which Fauré wrote when still a student in the 1860s, long before becoming the director of the Paris Conservatoire in Please note that there is no Choral Evensong today, but we will resume our usual schedule on Sunday November 25 at 4:30pm with Vaughan Williams majestic anthem setting of Herbert s poem: Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and king.
