2 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES General Superintendent s Message Truth Gives Hope This faith in Christ Jesus and love for our people springs from the hope in God which comes from hearing the Word of Truth the Gospel. They are correlated. When you know the Word of God, hope comes alive. Therefore it is vital that we build the foundation of truth in our lives. We need to invest in spiritual disciplines and spend time reading and knowing the Word of Truth. When we encounter God through His Word, we will receive a revelation of who God is and be transformed. Let s be found encountering God through His Word and our Worship. With blessings, Rev Dominic Yeo We have just celebrated the Lunar New Year. It was a great opportunity to catch up with our loved ones, relatives and friends. As believers, this is the time that we would seek to speak words of blessing to all whom we visit. More than just an exchange of words, when people look at our lives, what would they see? Paul wrote this to the holy and faithful brothers at Colosse: We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. Colossians 1:3-5 Faith in Christ Jesus and Love for the Saints Paul thanked God for his fellow brothers because he saw their faith in Christ Jesus and love for the saints. As believers, our lives are a reflection of the work of Christ. People see God though us. Our faith must be based in Christ Jesus and not on our life experiences. Such a faith is more than mere faithfulness; it is an audacious faith in God by which people can witness the miracles of God. Our love for one another must be genuine. It goes beyond the four walls of the church; it goes to our families, schools and workplaces, making an impact in lives.

ISSUE 006 AG TIMES Mar - Apr togetherness - ag community Assemblies of God Chinese 2012 Ministers Institutes and Retreat By Rev Peter Loh On Nov 19 to 21, 2012, more than 60 pastors and Chinese ministry leaders gathered at Harmoni One Convention Hotel, Batam Centre for a retreat. The theme for this retreat was taken from Isaiah 40:31 - 如鹰展翅上腾 Soar Like an Eagle. Pastor Chang Mao Sung, senior pastor of 新店行道会, Taiwan, shared with us his pastoral experiences and taught culturally-relevant skills on preaching to a Chinese- speaking congregation. Many ministers and leaders benefitted greatly from his teaching and heartfelt sharing. During the retreat, ministers and leaders from various churches had the opportunity to pray one for another and build new friendships AG Training and Together in Prayer By Lindsey Lui, Faith AG Church Somebody once said "The biggest room in the world is room for improvement." I thoroughly enjoyed at January s two TIP - Training and Together-in-Prayer at Elim Church. The monthly sessions are conducted to empower all AG pastors and ministers. Dr John Ng, President of Eagles Communication, shared practical tips on how to manage anger and conflict. Here are two useful tips to take home with you: 1. Watch out for hot buttons for Amygdala hijack! This happens when one s heartbeat exceeds 100 blood pressure and stress levels shoot up and one becomes reactive instead of rational! Such responses usually lead to a conflict situation. Aim instead to be a non-stick pan. Ask yourself Why am I so angry? How can I make this situation better? What must I do differently now? 2. Take a page from Joseph s life. He chose forgiveness over hatred and revenge. What was humanly impossible was now possible because Joseph turned his wounded heart to God. He was healed of all the hurtful memories and negative emotions. This led to a beautiful reconciliation with his brothers. I too need God, loving relationships and the re-wiring of my mind to recover from past conflicts. These choices will bring wholeness to my spirit, soul and body.

4 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES togetherness - ag community Courageous Faith - 7th Singapore Camporama By Royal Rangers Singapore On Nov 28 to Dec 1, the 7th Camporama saw nearly 800 campers from different churches and denominations in Singapore. Camporama is a highlight on the Royal Rangers calendar, held once every four years. Royal Rangers from all outposts in Singapore gathered at Christ Church Secondary School for an unforgettable camping and spiritual experience. The Camporama also welcomed Royal Rangers from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines who joined Singapore campers for three full days of fun, fellowship and friendship across a wide gamut of fun, adventure and activities. The three days of fun were matched by three nights of growing a deeper spiritual experience of worship, consecration and dedication to God. Every night was a life-changing moment for the many campers who crowded the altars. Thank God for the 31 who responded to salvation! Many more sought and found God s direction for their lives. Faith unleashed The campers were challenged to live in Courageous Faith by a dynamic lineup of anointed speakers. After breakfast, campers started their day with morning devotions in their small groups (patrols). Every evening, campers found their rest, physically and spiritually during the night services. Our prayer is for the 7th Camporama to be a significant milestone in every camper s walk with God. Rev Dominic Yeo, Senior Pastor, Trinity Christian Centre and his youth pastor, Pastor Melvin Lim, challenged the youth during the night services. Rev Nicholas Choo an ex-royal Ranger himself - challenged the children to take courage and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. They were encouraged by the lively sharing on the faith of David shared by Pastor Benjamin Chew, Acting Senior Pastor, Living Spring Fellowship; on the courage of Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego by Rev Patrick Pang, Faith Community Baptist Church; and, on the example of Stephen by Rev Gerry Poon, Senior Pastor, Harborlight Church. Fun unbounded Campers at Camporama had an ample range of activities to expend their energy across the two and a half days of boundless fun. For the brave-hearted, there were High Adventure activities Abseiling, Rock Climbing, Flying Fox, Challenge Ropes and Bouldering. Campers learnt to work in teams when they tackled the High Wall, Nitro Walk and River Crossing obstacles together and many turned out in droves to try out new skills like in-line skating and archery. Those out for pure fun loved the Carnival Games, such as Street Race, Ultimate Parking, King of the Crate; high-energy sports like Basketball, Badminton, Street Soccer, Table Tennis, and other silly Fun Games like Tentacle Attack, Capture-the-Flag. Lastly, electronic games Wii and Kinect and board games, like Carrom, Chess, Monopoly Deal, Uno and Saboteur were a godsend for those rainy afternoons. Friendships unlimited There were many opportunities to forge friendships across different churches and outposts. Bonds were formed during fun activities, communal meals and pintrading. Eager to complete the pin sets there were outpost and Camporama sets! - everyone at the camp gamely exchanged and traded pins, and some even took on kitchen duties and peddled canned drinks to earn extra pins to trade. Commanders strengthened connections with their Rangers as they played together; while fathers built up their relationship with their boys. Former Royal Rangers took the time to rekindle their friendships forged in their younger days. Many of them volunteered time to serve at the Camporama. Camporama brought people together. Although a ministry of the Assemblies of God, Royal Rangers Singapore has crossed political boundaries and districts, across the denominations and ages, bringing both seekers and believers into one body of faith, fun and fellowship in Jesus Christ. Missed out the fun? It is never too late for the 8th Singapore Camporama in 2016! In the meantime, join in the fun at a local outpost near you. For more information, please visit

6 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES togetherness - ag community TEEN CHALLENGE CHRISTMAS EVANGELISTIC SERVICE SOMEONE GREATER By Eevin Lee, Teen Challenge The name of Jesus was highly exalted at the Teen Challenge DARE Chapel. More than 100 family and friends of staff and residents, youths and volunteers came to celebrate Christmas on Dec 24, The opening service was filled with Christmas carols and put everyone into a joyous and merry mood. The merriment carried on with a Christmas skit, put together through the collaboration of both staff and residents. The story depicted the life of one who encountered Jesus Christ through his dreams in a drunken stupor. A picture of the nativity was painted as he moved from scene to scene in his dreams. The Christmas skit, titled Someone Greater, struck a chord with many individuals on that day as it echoed familiar accounts and similar challenges faced in our everyday lives. We were honored to have Ms Christine Lim a guest speaker, with us, whose message spoke into the hearts of many as she shared her personal experiences with God on how she was delivered during her darkest moments. Gathered together in the chapel, our Executive Director, Ms Joyce Chan led us in a beautiful candlelight service. The first flame was lit at the altar, passing on one by one through the congregation as we celebrated the birth of Christ and at the same time remembering His sacrifice for us. Across the chapel, the sight of soft flickering flames illuminating the faces of all was definitely an awesome sight to behold. To echo the theme of the Christmas skit, this Christmas was indeed about putting everything aside for someone greater. No gift can compare to the gift of Jesus, given to us by our Heavenly Father. Some of the youths, residents and family members made the bold decision to accept Jesus into their hearts that day. Witnessing people coming to the altar crowned the Christmas service. Indeed, this Christmas was a time for us to remember that the biggest gift of all was given to us from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting our trespasses against us (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). We thanked God for his continued blessings on the work of Teen Challenge while we rejoiced with the angels in heaven for the souls added into the Kingdom of God on this day. It is our earnest prayer that God will continue to use our hands to touch the lives of many that come through the doors of Teen Challenge. All Glory be to God! Ms Joyce Chan, the Executive Director of Teen Challenge (Singapore) leading the congregation in a time of thanksgiving and celebrating Christmas. It was a time of joy and gladness as youths from there@queensway, our youth hangout, came together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and experienced His love. Across the chapel, candles were lit up as each individual pass on the flame to another. It serves as a reminder that in the midst of darkness, God sent His Light to the world, who is Jesus Christ. At the end of the sermon, the altar call was given out and lives were rededicated and reconciled back to God. Our counselors stood beside to pray and reaffirm their salvation with a prayer. Praise the Lord!

ISSUE 006 AG TIMES Mar - Apr togetherness - ag community Assemblies of God Bible College (AGBC) The Institute of Church Ministries Programme was started to facilitate the local church in training lay leaders systematically. It seeks to equip the believer for practical ministry and to give a head-start towards preparation for marketplace ministry, missions involvement and eventual full-time ministry. It may serve as a lay leadership training programme or as the Christian Education programme of the church. The distinguishing feature, unlike typical Christian Education programmes in churches, is that it is upgradable and transferable to fullcredit programmes at AGBC. This gives added impetus to the local church Christian Education programme. In addition, it provides an introduction to Bible School training and allows the local church to access resources not available internally. For enquiries on the Institute of Church Ministries, please do not hesitate to contact Rev Peter Soh, Dean of Studies, Assemblies of God Bible College at petersoh@agbc.edu.sg or call The program comprises three levels : 1. FOUNDATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF CHURCH MINISTRIES 2. INTERMEDIATE CERTIFICATE OF CHURCH MINISTRIES 3. 8 8 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES togetherness - ag churches Continued from page 1 It was a moment of humble reminiscence and reverent awe as the guests saw the tangible faithfulness of God through the years as gratitude were offered by her founding, former and present senior pastors - Rev Dr Fred Seaward, Rev Pang Ek Kwan and Rev Chia Beng Hock. Different worship teams led in high praise throughout the evening; including a team of talented musicians and gifted songwriters who led with songs of worship that were birthed from Bethel. The multi-generational celebrations featured various poignant videos, a grand opening sequence by the adult worship and dance team, a rousing dance item and a moving rendition of How Great is Our God by the children and youth (Fission-X), and climaxed with worship by the youth worship team. Rev Dominic Yeo delivered a word in season for Bethel. Sharing from Mark, he challenged Bethel to claim God s inheritance even as she will experience great spiritual conquest by crossing into the destiny that God has for her. He declared that as Bethel hosted God s presence, the manifestation of His power would liberate men and women and be accompanied by healings, signs, wonders and miracles. The congregation was also encouraged to rise up in faith to evangelize and bring hope that people of today need. Sealing it all in, Apostle Naomi Dowdy released the anointing that birthed the church to perpetuate from generation to generation. She declared that there would be no lack, but there would be increase, expansion, sending forth of a new generation; raised and nurtured in the Word and the Spirit, with a passion to walk with our Almighty God, sealed in the heavens by the authority of the Almighty God. With 56 years of God s faithfulness in her rich heritage, it is with great excitement and fervor that Bethel Assembly of God anticipates the inheritance that God has ahead for her! To God be all Glory and Honor! By Loh Chang Xiang, Bethel Assembly of God

ISSUE 006 AG TIMES Mar - Apr togetherness - ag churches ALL IT TAKES IS A GOD IDEA By ROLAND SPENNINGER, new horizon church On Jan 6, 2013, New Horizon Church celebrated her inaugural service. Gracing the occasion was Rev Dominic Yeo, General Superintendent, Assemblies of God of Singapore. He expressed his thanks to the former Senior Pastor, Rev Dr Johnny Yeoh, for his distinguished work at Herald Assembly and to Rev Lawrence Koo for ably pastoring Agape Community Church and now taking on the leadership of New Horizon Church. In his opening address, Rev Dominic said that this is a time of growing from strength to strength; it s the coming together of two so as to gather greater synergy and strength to do the work of the Kingdom of God. The amazing journey of the two churches began with a proposition made in early It was a defining moment when the wheels were set in motion for the fulfillment of the will of God. In the search of a successor for Rev Dr Johnny Yeoh, who had planned to complete his ministry as Senior Pastor of Herald Assembly of God by Oct 2012, the idea of merging the two churches came up over a lunch meeting with Rev Lawrence Koo, then the Senior Pastor of Agape Community Church. After a time of seeking the Lord, both pastors discussed the idea with their Boards, highlighting the advantages of combining the two churches. Both Boards were receptive towards the proposition and following a time of deliberation and committing the matter to the Lord, a sense of affirmation was felt amongst the leaders. It was always our priority to see God leading us in this process, that it would never be a man-made merger but a God-inspired one, witnessed through the leading of the Holy Spirit. From the day we started exploring the possibility of a merger, we based it on one of equality, i.e. no takeover or absorption by either church but that both churches would unite into a new church, with a new identity, a new vision and even a new name. Throughout the journey, regular updates and question and answer sessions were conducted to keep leaders and the congregations informed. The marriage of the two churches was driven by a "commitment to the larger kingdom" of God and better stewardship of all the blessings each church had been given in terms of talents and resources. It took a lot of work, nevertheless, it was also enriching learning new things about ourselves, others and the love and patience of God. With the right kind of attitude, openness, flexibility, prayers and a deepening faith, we ventured into an amazing journey. Amidst the challenging times, there were many moments where we witnessed joy and grace made possible through Christ. "It's like blending two families," Pastor Koo said. "Each congregation has its own culture. To do this, you need to embrace change." The inaugural service on was without doubt a major milestone. Right now, we are enjoying our honeymoon ; church attendance for the first few services has been very encouraging as members were excited to come for Sunday Service. We know much is still to be done to further gel the congregation, of moving from an us and them to a we perspective. This new life together might not be without pain and frustration. Making it a truly successful merger will only happen when everyone is willing to let go of their former identities and allow God to help reshape and form us into a new church. Nevertheless, we are determined to generate new life and energy toward spreading the message of Jesus Christ. What began as an idea shared over lunch is now a reality. The church can now concentrate on its vision: to give hope to the lost, and a future to the found. Based on our core value Looking Upward and Moving Forward, we believe that we will, in greater measure than before, touch the lives of people and take new ground for the Lord. To God be the glory!

10 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES togetherness - ag churches hearing the voice of god by Emmanuel AG Rev Dominic Yeo conducted a Prophetic Seminar at our church, Emmanuel AG, over three days from Jan 24 to 26, Before the session, Alicia and Aaron wondered if they could really prophesy. What if they get it wrong? The session was candid and very personal, Alicia recalled, Rev Dominic and his team provided biblical insights on how we can exercise our prophetic gifting. I stepped out in faith and was amazed by our great God as I was able to bless others through prophesying! I am now more convinced than before that God really speaks through visions, thoughts, and feelings etc. Roland Tan shared his reflections as a leader attending the seminar, I've been blessed by this very much. Being a Christian leader for so long, I have learnt to pray prophetically through trial and error, and through hearing some pastors' sermons. This seminar provided a safe environment to practice, make mistakes and learn systematically on how to pray prophetically. The activation exercise has definitely helped me to step out more boldly to pray prophetically for people in my ministry. It was truly a time of new revelation and breaking of mindsets as Rev Dominic and team continued teaching and leading the church in prophetic activation. The seminar has helped me to understand how to move in the prophetic and gave much knowledge on what was previously unclear to me, said Pamela Peh. It provided a platform for practice that propelled me to step forth in boldness to learn in a healthy, encouraging environment. It was very encouraging to see so many of us flowing in prophesying during the practices, said Daniel Tan. As many grew in learning to hear from God, they left with a sense of humility, recognizing that they had to remove any trace of spiritual pride that got in their way. They learnt what a great privilege it is to edify others through prophecy. I know now that I can be bold and confident to be used as a priest to mediate between people and our God, says Alicia. Both Aaron and I look forward to the last installment of the seminar on Prophetic Application scheduled in May Thank you, God, for sending Rev Dominic and his blessed team to Emmanuel AG and for igniting the congregation for prophesy.

ISSUE 006 AG TIMES Mar - Apr togetherness - ag churches Celebration, Intimacy, Glory by Jason Lim, calvary AG Oh Lord, you are my God! declared the Calvarities at the stroke of midnight on the last day of It was the dawn of a new year for the vibrant and growing church. Members gathered to usher in what Rev Gerald Tan (right), Senior Pastor of Calvary Assembly of God, prophetically declared to be a year of Celebration, Intimacy and Glory. During the annual watchnight service, Rev Gerald preached an inspirational message from Isaiah 25:6 (NLT) In Jerusalem, the Lord of Heaven s armies will spread a wonderful feast for all the people of the world. It will be a delicious banquet with clear, well-aged wine and choice meat. He highlighted that God's preparation of a feast for His servants alluded to a season of celebratory jubilance that Calvary would experience as a church for the year ahead. Much to the amusement of the congregation, he grinningly confessed his love for food and that his favourite part of the verse was the "choice meat" that was promised. In that sense, the reason for celebration would not be a situational expression, but a proclamation of God's blessings upon each Calvarite; that He was the God of "more than enough". God's wiping of tears and removal of reproach in verse 8 signified God's drawing of people to Himself. As much as celebration indicated that the season of mourning was over, there was also a threshold of intimacy that Calvary was to enter into. It would be out of intimacy in His presence that healing, restoration and even complete victory would occur. "The moment Israel recognised Yahweh as God, the declaration completely destroyed the works of the enemy," he emphasised. "In the same manner, God wants to bring us a permanent victory over the enemy's work. You will experience victory not in a temporary sense, but a work that is permanently established over past issues and sins." Closing with Haggai 2:6-9, Pastor Gerald reminded the congregation that Calvary must be about God's glory as God desired to "fill this house with His glory". Indeed, it would be a much-anticipated year of an increasing awareness of His presence, and with it, an overflow to become a blessing. Reflecting on the church's spiritual journey since his recent appointment as the church's senior pastor, Pastor Gerald said, "I am excited to witness and be a part of the transformation that God is bringing Calvary through. The various testimonies of the wonderful things that God is doing in our midst attest to this new season that the church is just beginning to experience. It is a great start to this new year because He is building His church!"

12 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES training Why we worship the way we do in Pentecostal churches By Pastor Daphne June Lau, Eternal Life Assembly of God Lifting hands, singing in tongues, dancing and shouting Hallelujah! Are we crazy? What really is worship? In his book Exploring Worship: A Practical Guide to Praise & Worship, Bob Sorge gives us several very good definitions of worship. Here are a few excerpts: 1. Worship is our affirmative response to the selfrevelation of the Triune God. For the Christian, each act of life is an act of worship when it is done with love that responds to the Father s love. Living should be constant worshiping, since worship may be said to provide the metabolism for spiritual life. 2. Worship was the outcome of the fellowship of love between the Creator and Man and is the highest point Man can reach in response to the love of God. It is the first and principal purpose of Man s eternal calling. 3. True worship and praise are awesome wonder and overpowering love in the presence of our God. Worship is the ability to magnify God with our whole being body, soul, and spirit. The heart of true worship is the unashamed pouring out of our inner self upon the Lord Jesus Christ in affectionate devotion. 4. Worship is the response of God s Spirit in us to that Spirit in Him whereby we answer, Abba, Father, deep calling unto deep. We see that worship in itself does not have anything to do with music or songs. Music and songs are means to for us to express worship to God. There are many aspects of worship but in this discussion, the focus is on the corporate worship in a Pentecostal Church. Why do we worship the way we do in a Pentecostal Worship Service? In order to answer that question, we have to ask what takes place in a Pentecostal worship service. I had the privilege of growing up in a Pentecostal Church. My father was the Senior Pastor and he loved to worship. Whenever he took over the service from the worship leader or called for an altar call, he would encourage the congregation to press on a few more minutes in free worship. He would model it by singing and worshiping in tongues. There were many times where prophetic utterances would be heard and people would be encouraged by the prophetic words inspired by the Holy Spirit. Several testified to seeing visions, experiencing healing or feeling raindrops during these times of worship. Hence the kind of worship I am used to involved a lot of outward expressions the raising of hands, clapping, dancing, singing, shaking and other expressions. The worship leaders raised in my church were encouraged to be led by the Spirit, give time for free worship and encourage the congregation to express worship to the Lord in tongues. This did not mean that the worship leaders did not prepare their song set and rehearse with the worship team prior to the service. It was more that they were open to the leading of

ISSUE 006 AG TIMES Mar - Apr training the Holy Spirit and flexible to abandon their songset and flow with the direction that the Holy Spirit was taking in the worship service. I was raised leading worship this way as well and in every worship session, I would encourage singing in the spirit and give time for the Holy Spirit to speak to the congregation. I must say that I not only enjoyed each worship experience but I encountered God in a real way as we worshiped and sang in the spirit. Later on, as I learned more about worship, I personally defined this type of Spirit-led free worship as Spirit-empowered worship. It was electrifying. To me: Spirit-empowered worship is the kind of worship characterized by the active participation of ardent worshippers gathered together, giving freedom for the Holy Spirit to move, with signs and wonders evident in the service. Spirit-empowered worship goes beyond just plain singing, polished transitions and a wellplanned order of songs. Spirit-empowered worship unlocks the supernatural and changes lives. Pentecostals are more Spirit-led in the worship services, which tends to be misunderstood as emotional, hyped-up and or even chaotic and confusing by those who are more used to a structured worship service that is practiced by other denominations. When the Holy Spirit fell on the believers on the Day of Pentecost, their lives were completely changed. The Holy Spirit brought about a fresh revelation of God to them, changing the dynamics of their worship. Although the worship in the early church was conducted in believers homes and simplicity marked the house-church worship services, it was powerful. The worship consisted, for the most part, of praise (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16), prayer, reading from the Scriptures, exposition, prophesying and tongues, and other spiritual gifts. But the emphasis throughout would be on the Spirit and the inner love and devotion of the heart. The worship was so vibrant and electrifying as we see chains literally broken and lives set free in the Pentecostal-type worship of the early days. That is our model for Pentecostal worship! Worship in Pentecostal Churches must be vibrant and electrifying. It is the Holy Spirit that enables us to worship and gives us the added language in our worship as well. I believe that the Holy Spirit is the one that fuels worship. Let us as Pentecostals continue to desire more of the Holy Spirit in our worship services and give Him time to minister to the people. In wanting to be professional and prepared in our worship services, let us not lose our Pentecostal heritage of Spirit-empowered worship. 14 14 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES training Five Myths about Worship Myth 1: I can only worship God in a church when there s a music band Truth: In John 4:21-24, Jesus introduced a new kind of worship and a new breed of worshippers worshippers who worshipped in spirit and in truth, not restricted to locale but who were filled with God s Spirit and were free to worship wherever they were. In Acts 16:25, Paul and Silas worshipped in prison without a music band! Therefore, worship is not confined to the four walls of a church building. Rather, true worship is defined and established within the walls of a heart that loves God. Myth 2: Worship can only be good if the worship team plays well and they sing my favorite songs Truth: Lights, sound, songs, the worship leader/ team do not determine the quality of your worship experience although the excellence in these areas can enhance the worship experience when they are present. What determines good worship lies with the worshippers themselves. We determine the height of our worship experience by the depth of our hunger and breadth of our receptivity towards God. Myth 3: The lifting of hands is for the more spiritual people. Truth: The raising up of hands, clapping, dancing and bowing down and making a joyful noise are all postures of worship exemplified in the Bible. You can do them as expressions of your worship to God as well. Myth 4: I cannot sing Happy Day or Lord You are good when I m going through a difficult time it s just hypocritical. Truth: It is not hypocritical to honor God with your worship despite personal struggles. The Bible mentions the concept of bringing to God a sacrifice of praise praise that goes against how we feel at that moment, and praise that responds to who God is rather than how we feel. These songs can also be a declaration of faith - confidence of things hoped for, evidence of things not seen! Myth 5: Worship needs to be reverent and solemn. It cannot be too emotional; besides, I am not the expressive kind. Truth: Worship is to involve the emotions. God has created us as emotional creatures. We are to worship the Lord with our whole being Deut 10:12. We feel sadness and gladness. We smile and we cry. We get bored and we get excited. We can express worship in many different ways. King David modeled worship 2 Samuel 6:15-16a King Solomon encouraged expressive worship 2 Chronicles 7:1-3 The worship that s taking place in heaven now is expressive! 15 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES Mar - Apr training How to grow in your personal times of worship - An interview Pastor Andrew Yeo Integrity Music (Asia) Worship Artiste Worship Pastor, The City Church 1. What was your view of worship in the past? Worship was just singing some songs before the sermon starts. 2. How has worship changed your life? It taught me how my life can be poured out in holiness, obedience, service, mission, sharing the Gospel with the lost, sharing our bread with the poor and sharing our lives with one another. 3. Were there any specific moments of worship that have impacted you? When I do worship tours around Asia, seeing people in bondage being set free, seeing the sick being healed and seeing people receiving Jesus as their savior during worship. 4. Is there/are there any person (s) that contributed to your growth in worship and if so, how? The Holy Spirit. He inspires me and reveals Jesus to me in an awesome way. I have had experiences and encounters where I could feel the tangible presence of God. I have been awakened in the middle of the night with new songs as well. 5. What caused you to want to serve in the worship ministry and do what you are doing now? I heard an audible voice telling me that one day I would be like the man on stage who was leading worship when I first stepped into the church for the very first time. The more I worshipped Him, the more I was changed and the desire to serve Him in this area grew. 6. Any other interesting stuff? The amazing truth is that when we worship God, we are not disappointed. Psalm 100 encourages us not just to draw near with thanksgiving and praise, but also to enjoy the reality that the Lord is good and his love endures forever. God has made it possible for every one of us to enter in and experience the privilege of his presence. In Christ, we are free to enjoy a relationship with the Holy Spirit, a pleasure we can enjoy forever. 7. What were some practical steps you took to grow in your personal times of worship? Knowing the constant awareness of Him in our midst will keep me singing and worshiping Him in the spirit everywhere. Miss Cheryl Ho Secondary School Teacher Youth Mentor and Senior Worship Leader at Calvary Assembly of God 1. What was your view of worship in the past? I thought that worship was not very important and more like a concert. I never thought much about it and felt the music in church was like a collection of nice sing-alongs. 2. How has worship changed your life? The biggest way worship has changed me is that now I really want to make sure I have a song in my spirit all the time (or most of the time, I try). It has shown me that songs written with an anointing do more than soothe the soul, they really reach into the person's being and minister from deep within. People say that music can heal and all, but that's not the real deal. The reality I've learnt and experienced is that when worship gets into your system, it doesn't really matter what miracle you may/may not receive; because you know there is an inner healing and reconciliation with what God really is trying to do in your life. 3. Were there any specific moments of worship that have impacted you? Probably can't remember this - but learning how to and actually free-worshipping! I really enjoy it and I think we all need to experience that regularly. Just having that time of allowing the songs and the ministry of God to wash over you and flood your being is very impactful - you can't walk away from that and say you didn't gain anything out of it. 4. What caused you to want to serve in the worship ministry and do what you are doing now? I started out helping as a vocalist-cum-projectionist, since my best friend was in church anyway and we might as well serve since we were there. My journey into becoming a full-on worship leader started when... I was thrown into the deep end! Well, I still am a worship leader today, and have been for the last 12 years. Nonetheless, if that had not been done, I don't think I would be able to fully appreciate what worship can do to a person's life (including my own) and how God's grace really enables us to do what we do for Him. 5. Is there/are there any person (s) that contributed to your growth in worship and if so, how? I think the biggest influences on my growth in the worship ministry would be Pastor Lau (my Senior Pastor then) and Pastor Daphne Lau (my Worship Pastor then). They firmly believed that "If you don't try, you will never learn.". It was their passion for wanting to see people engaged in worship and enjoy worshipping that made me really cherish worship in my own life. They knew how worship could be refreshing and seeing them worship every week was a total encouragement and motivation to want to know God more. 6. What were some practical steps you took to grow in your personal times of worship? Making sure I really did spend time worshipping rather than trying to rush through my time with God. And also, asking God for a song for the day so I'd get a constant earworm - and be reminded about what life is really meant to be.

16 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES transformation Discovering god By Li Meng, Moriah Assembly of God I always felt out of place as I looked ethnically different from my family members and peers in an all-chinese school. My parents doted on me a lot and I even had the opportunity to hear about Jesus when my father brought me to church on Sundays as a young boy. However my motivation to wake up on Sunday mornings and attend church was not to attend service. It was to eat the delicious sotong balls and Ribena that was provided after the service. Hence, I grew up knowing about God but never really interested in what God had to say. As I grew up through, I continued to wrestle with my identity. Why did I look so different from my parents and other family members? Looking like a non- Chinese among Chinese made me wonder where do I fit in? I was searching for answers within. Sometime in Junior College, a senior in school, Joash, invited me to Moriah Assembly Of God. It was at Moriah that I discovered that church was more than sotong balls and RIbena. The messages encouraged me and I started attending church regularly. I was grappling with my identity but found no answers till I went to army. Last year, before my jungle confidence course in Brunei, my platoon commander passed me this letter from my parents that contained the story of my natural birth. It confirmed the suspicion I had all along that I was adopted. In that instance, my whole world came crashing down. It was as though my life was a lie. Who did I belong to? Why did my birth parents give me away? Why didn t anyone tell me earlier? I was broken on the inside as I allowed these questions to flood my mind. I was thrown into a confusion. There were also other issues going on in my life then. My family s financial situation resulted in us having to downgrade to a smaller house. I was worried about my future as I had not yet been accepted into any of the three local universities. In desperation, I knelt down before God and humbly cried out to Him for intervention. There was no whirlwind of miraculous signs from Him. But there was a certainty of peace in my heart that night after praying. Over the weekends at church, God spoke to me through two sermons that left key truths in my life. Firstly he taught me to remain faithful, trust Him, obey Him and He will never let you down. Secondly through small steps of obedience, my faith in me will grow stronger. Thirdly, through Psalm 46:10, to simply be still and know that He is God. Since then, I had stopped relying on my own ability and leaned not on my own understanding but surrendered my situation to God. It was then that His work in my family became more and more evident. By His own ways, He divinely turned my family s situation around and blessed us with a new house. He opened the doors for me to secure a place in The National University of Singapore. His Word is true in Jeremiah 29:11 I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. I thank God for healing me of my insecurity. Today, I know that God loves me regardless of who I was and that my identity is in Him. Indeed, His grace is sufficient for me! God is good! I believe that as He has transformed my life, I know He will continue to work in my family. In His time, my family will come to know Him and trust Him to be their God. I would like to share this poem called Footprints in the Sand. It encouraged me when I felt alone and thought that God had forsaken me. May you be blessed and encouraged by God as you read it. Footprints in the Sand By mary stevenson One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it: LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me. The LORD replied: My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

ISSUE 006 AG TIMES Mar - Apr transformation Cancer Gone! By Roger Goh, Trinity Christian Centre In August last year, my friend, Geraldine, from Trinity Christian Centre invited my wife and daughter to church. They started to attend Trinity and eventually asked me to go with them. But I did not because of my religious commitments. After some time, I noticed a change in my wife. We had fewer arguments at home. I thought to myself, Is this for real? Is this God so powerful? So I joined them in church to find out. While I was in church, I felt good and more relaxed. Some time in September, I didn t feel well and went to see a doctor. They took blood samples from my bone marrow for further checks. While I was in hospital, I heard from my family about the Amy Sand concert and I wanted to go. I was not supposed to leave the hospital but sneaked out to watch the concert anyway. At the concert, I felt at peace. Together with the changes I saw in my wife, I was convinced to accept Jesus into my heart. After we went back to the hospital, the doctors broke the news to us that I had contracted leukaemia. I broke down. I had a family to support and my children were still young. What was I going to do? The doctors said that I only had three to five days to live if there was no treatment. Those few days, I was in turmoil and felt frustrated with everything.thankfully the leaders from the church came to visit me. Though they didn t know me well, they took time to come and pray for me. I was very touched and moved by their acts of care and love. Before the chemotherapy, I was very afraid but they encouraged me and prayed with me. After a month, the doctors took another sample from my bone marrow for testing. The result was unbelievable. I am cancer free! Even the doctors were very amazed at the result. Despite two sessions of chemotherapy, I did not lose any weight. In fact, I had gained weight! Not only did God heal me, He also provided for my family in ways I could never have imagined. My wife and I were initially very troubled by the high cost of chemotherapy treatment and hospitalization bills. Even after the government subsidies, we still had to pay a hefty five-digit sum. But God is good! We received a 100% grant from the hospital. This meant we didn t have to pay a single cent for all the medical bills, including all the outpatient visits as well as medication required! Today I am happy to be alive and with my family. Through these amazing experiences, I know that this God is the real God.

18 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES transformation Clinic of God s miracles by Rev Dr Moses Pi Cheng-Ming, Bethel Assembly of God Many cancer patients were healed, those who could not walk started walking and those who were hopeless received hope! These are the works of God. We thank God that He gave Bethel AG a community Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Clinic. It has been operating for six years, every Wednesday and Friday, from 9am to 4pm. On average, there are about 40 patients from the community, and every week there was an average of two persons who accepted Christ. We have had countless miracles and blessings in the past six years. In 2008, our beloved Pastor Oh Beng Khee met with an accident in Medan, Indonesia. When Pastor Oh was in the stage of recovering, he frequented our clinic often. Praise be to God, he recovered speedily. He then introduced a 92-year-old sister-in-christ, Sister Ong to the clinic. At that time, Sister Ong was too weak to sit on a wheelchair; she had great pain in her face and head, and had difficulty talking. She had seen many general practitioners but to no avail. Sister Ong came to the clinic for treatment four times and one day when she came in to the clinic, she exclaimed with joy and excitement to all the clinic staff that God had healed her. Unknown to her, there was a Mr Yap who also came to the clinic for treatment for pain in his waist and leg and he witnessed the miracle of Sister Ong s healing for he had seen her in a wheelchair in one of his earlier visits. As he came in for consultation that day, Mr Yap said to me, Dr Pi, I want to believe in your Jesus, because your Jesus is so wonderful, and full of love for people. I have personally seen your Jesus healing people, so I want to believe in Jesus. So right there and then, I led him in the Sinner s Prayer to accept Jesus. After praying, his wife cried as she had been praying for her husband s salvation for the past 33 years, and now he has finally received Christ and received salvation. Mr Yap not only received Jesus as Lord, but also received healing from his pains after four consecutive visits at the clinic. When the Chinese New Year was around the corner, one afternoon Mrs Yap heard some noises in the living room. She went to check it out and saw Mr Yap climbing up a ladder to remove the idols. Mrs Yap asked him why. He said, I ve believed in Jesus, there is no point to leave the idols here. They must be removed. Praise God for His leading, Brother Yap not only received water baptism subsequently, he also offered his house for carecell meetings. We did not know Bro Yap and his family before this, but because of Bethel TCM Clinic, we built a wonderful relationship with them, and opened the door for spreading the gospel. As we work the ground, we sow in tears but we will surely reap with joy. We do the simple things (sowing the seeds of the gospel), and ask God to do the difficult ones (for people to receive salvation). This is the principle behind what we do.

20 Mar - Apr 2013 ISSUE 006 AG TIMES transformation God Never Fails When We Put Him First By Poon Chong Lin, Trinity Christian Centre After completing National service in 2010, I ve been working part-time and studying in university to avoid taxing my family s finances as we were in a financial crisis. I also didn t want to accumulate a large debt when I graduate, so I chose to repay my study loan while studying. Juggling work and studies wasn t easy. Moreover, I was very involved in basketball training and competitions. On top of that, I served actively in church as a Spiritual Parent in my carecell, a Celebration Host and Traffic Marshall and organized some campus ministry events. I was also constantly invited to hall activities and suppers but time and again, God reminded me of my priorities to always have time to serve Him and give my best in my studies. It was quite a crazy schedule but God enabled me to clear my first semester with a GPA of 4.4. However, the financial situation at home worsened and I took time to pray and consult my leaders and decided to take up another parttime job as a basketball coach for more income. At this point, I knew that something had to go. Among all the priorities in my life, work, studies, church and basketball, I decided to give up my passion in competitive basketball. It was a tough choice but God never shortchanged me. By the end of my first year in university, God not only provided for my living expenses, but I also finished my first year of university debtfree. When I started my second year of university, my academic schedule did not allow me to coach anymore but God gave me a timely pay raise at work which made up for the income lost from not being able to coach. In August last year, God challenged me to rise up and serve Him as a carecell leader. I wondered how I would be able to serve God with the little time and energy that I had. But I took a step of faith and decided to honor God with the little that I had left. God provided divine opportunities to connect my irregular carecell members back to the carecell. This was a great breakthrough for me and my spiritual parents and strengthened our faith! God moved in my carecell and within a month, our attendance almost doubled! Members were caring and connecting with their friends and bringing them to cell and church. God is amazing! Being a cell leader requires high commitment. I was still working part time and I was getting really drained and tired. I evaluated my priorities again Work, Studies and Ministry. One had to go. I wasn t planning to be a school drop-out; neither did I want to stop serving God. Yet on the other hand I needed my allowance. I prayed and decided to trust God with my finances, and so I gave up my job. Some may call it foolishness God calls it faith. During the Vision faith promise week, while I was serving in the choir during the first night service on Thursday, I asked God to show me the amount He wanted me to give. It was a huge amount which I may be able to save up eventually but was meant for my university fees and allowance. Furthermore, I just got rejected for a scholarship the day before. I heard the same amount from God from Thursday till Saturday but I had a lot of doubts and fear. Finally, during Saturday service, I wrote the amount which I did not have and left church worrying if I had heard correctly. But I decided to trust God to provide when He called. The following Monday, I received an from my school informing me that I was awarded with a bursary that gave much more than the scholarship I was rejected from. It was probably the highest amount among my peers. And it fulfilled 80% of my faith promise and provided for me the allowance I needed! God is really faithful! As I avail myself to serve Him, I know I can truly trust Him to be the Lord of my life. Praise God! Eternal Life Assembly presents An Easter Play STRIPPED!
