Music will be provided by Resurrection Afterglow. Picnic following the service. Members of First Presbyterian Church of Menominee are asked to bring a dessert to share. Members of Pioneer Presbyterian Church are asked to bring a salad to share. Come join us by the river! Pioneer Presbyterian Church The new Glory to God hymnal is a wonderful hymnal. Therefore, Worship and Music wants to introduce some of these inspiring newer songs within our worship repertoire. Please let us know what you think of these songs and also any favorite songs that you would like us to sing during worship. 2 title Back in Seattle, pastors would refer to August as the Wedding Month. It was the only month that engaged couples could be assured would be sunny. Most weddings occurred in the five-week span of August to Labor Day. In this area, August is an active time to get outdoors. There are family vacations, Waterfront, boating excursions, and Pioneer s annual picnic. Last month, First Presbyterian of Menominee held their 150th Celebration Picnic at Henes Park and it was an outdoor success. Thank you to Pat Johnson and Steve Engeldinger for coordinating such a wonderful event. We give thanks to God for the children that were baptized in the bay and to those who reaffirmed their faith. It was a great celebration in the Spirit. We have already begun talking about doing it again next year. Whether we are gathering at the river or the bay, Presbyterians celebrate the great gift of God s creation given to humanity. In the first chapter of Genesis, we hear God s proclamation that the world is very good, and that we are sent to subdue and enjoy God s creation. August is a perfect time to live out this calling by exploring the great outdoors. God also calls us to be good stewards of this world. It surprises me when some of my Christian friends question the possibility of global warming. Christianity is clear in stating that we are all sinful creatures; and in our sin, we can cause a lot of damage to the good gifts that God provides. I remember being taught this lesson as a child when my dad would encourage me to pick up litter. Even as a young child, it seemed lazy and reckless to throw trash on the ground instead of walking a little farther to a trash can. And yet, people still litter; and I still pick up trash when I am walking. Being a good steward and enjoying God s creation goes hand in hand. In fact, I will go as far to say that as we become better stewards, we are empowered to better enjoy God s creation. When we are careless and poor stewards of the earth, we lessen our appreciation of God s goodness found in creation. Many hunters, fishers, and bird watchers I have talked with have a deep understanding of stewardship. They have witnessed firsthand what carelessness can do to the environment. We don t have to be hunters, fishers or bird watchers to know that we should take care of what God has blessed us with. As you travel and enjoy the great outdoors, I encourage you to give thanks to God for his providence and beautiful creation. Practice good stewardship and by doing so, pass it down to your children and grandchildren. They too will see how wondrous and great our God truly is. Therefore, the Mission Committee would like to ask your hep in supporting a paper drive. This can include picnic supplies such as paper plates, paper cups, plastic silverware, napkins, placemats and/or toilet paper and paper towels. They can also use reams/cases of paper, envelopes, and post-it notes. There is a donation box in the narthex. Thank you for your support and donations! Hearing Assistance System A hearing assist system, known as a hearing loop, will be installed in the sanctuary the week of July 30. It will be installed by DRS Sound, Inc. located in Kiel, WI. A hearing loop helps people who have hearing aids that are equipped with T-coils to hear sounds from a PA system directly and clearly in their hearing aids because it reduces and/or cuts out background noise. The loop is a wire placed around the perimeter of the sanctuary to act as an antenna that radiates the magnetic signal to the hearing aid. To use the system the hearing aid user selects the T setting on their hearing aid. This system will also help those who have some difficulty hearing but do not have a hearing aid or have a hearing aid that does not have the T setting. By wearing a small receiver the size of a cell phone, and using a set of earphones (either the ones provided by the church or your own) you will receive this loop signal and be able to control the volume level on the receiver. You will not have to sit in a special area as the loop will cover the entire sanctuary. To start, we will have two of the receivers for people with hearing difficulties to try out. 4 NEWS for first presbyterian church of menominee Book Club The next meeting for the Book Club will be August 23 at 6:30 P.M. We meet at Harbors in the fourth-floor library. This month s selection is Code Girls: The Untold Story of the America Women Code Breakers of World War II by Liza Mundy. Code Girls reveals a hidden army of female cryptographers, whose work played a crucial role in ending World War II. Mundy has resuced a piece of forgotten history and given these American heroes the recogition they deserve. We enjoy reading new books as well as classics and would love to have your suggestion for fun and interesting reading material. As always, we welcome new members and would love to have you join us to share your favorite books with us. If you need a ride please call Janet Johnson at Presbyterian Women For the summer months, the Presbyterian Women will be meeting for lunches, this month s lunch will be August 11:00 a.m. at Schloegel s Bay View Restaurant. Mission News We will continue to collect personal items for men, women, and teens. These items will be donated to The Abundant Life Mission (the homeless shelter). Please place your donations in the basket in the Gathering Room. The loose coin offering will be collected every third Sunday in our offering plates. We will announce the designation at the end of November. Thank You. Deacon s Doings for June and July We met on Tuesday, June 5. The June and July food distribution were done by Ann Schultz. Helen Thibodeau and Mary Ann Langill have agreed to coordinate the second Sunday Coffee Hour. Helen Thibodeau sent four cards to graduates. We voted to give $250 to Presbytery Point.
