Followers soon came. When his disciples had grown in number, Francis established a Rule for his community. This was the founding of the Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi, who were approved by the Holy See in Humility was to be the hallmark of the brothers as it had been in Francis s personal life. Besides the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, Francis followers accepted a fourth obligation of a perpetual Lenten fast. Francis possessed the gifts of miracles and prophecy; he was a defender of the poor and oppressed. Following the request of Pope Sixtus IV, Francis traveled to Paris to help Louis XI of France prepare for his death. While there he helped to restore peace between France and Brittany by advising a marriage between the ruling families, and between France and Spain by persuading Louis XI to return some disputed land. Francis died while at the French court. Wednesday, April 3: Lenten Weekday Thursday, April 4: St. Isidore, Bishop & Doctor of the : Isidore was archbishop of Seville, Spain about the year 600during a time when the Spanish church witnessed numerous councils, one of the greatest being the fourth Council of Toledo. Isidore headed this council, which decreed union between church and state, toleration of Jews, and uniformity in the Spanish mass. He sought the conversion of the Visigoths from Arianism. Isidore is well known for his literary work, Etymologie, which was widely read throughout the Middle Ages. Isidore s other writings included works on linguistics, works on natural science and cosmology and works on history. His theological works included biographies of 86 biblical persons, a handbook of moral theology and a spiritual meditation. Isidore was canonized in Pope Innocent XIII declared him a doctor of the church in Friday, April 5: St. Vincent Ferrer, Priest: Vincent entered the Dominican Order in Spain at 19 and after a brilliant career as a student was ordained a priest. He was chosen prior of the Dominican house in Valencia shortly after his ordination.
