2 Recently I came across an interesting little book that I read some years ago, entitled: How Starbucks Saved My Life. It s a first-person, real-life account of Michael Gates Gill, son of the famous writer, Brendan Gill, who grew up amidst a life of wealth, privilege and social prestige. Raised in a 35-room mansion in New York City, as a young man Michael Gill spent his summers abroad, hobnobbing with literati and glitterati like Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, and Andy Warhol. After graduating from Yale, the old-boy network helped him land a high-paying job with one of the big advertising agencies on Madison Avenue, and he was soon put in charge of major accounts like Ford and the U.S. Marines. By his own account, he became a hard-nosed businessman in a dog-eat-dog world, and he used his position to squeeze maximum results from the people who worked under him. He married a wealthy socialite and had four children. He and his wife owned a brownstone in Manhattan and spent weekends at their Connecticut farmhouse, but marriage, fatherhood, and family took a back seat to his own interests and career. Something happened, however, when he was in his mid-fifties, something that changed his life radically. A British billionaire, in a hostile takeover, bought the company Gill had worked at for 28 years and fired him. At his age, he was simply no longer cost-effective to employ. That was the beginning of a downward spiral in Michael Gill s life. He started a personal consulting firm that went nowhere, supported his family for a while on inheritance and savings, kept up his lofty lifestyle, and spent his days at an exclusive gym. It was there that he met a young professional woman, and to salve his wounded ego, he initiated a disastrous extramarital affair. His lover bore him an out-ofwedlock child, and when his wife and college-age children found out, he found himself not only without a job, but without a house, family, or home. As soon as his young lover figured out that he had no money and no real prospects, she dumped him, too. So by the time he had reached his early 60s, Gill was living in a cheap rented apartment, unable to get a job, down to his last dime, incapable of supporting his children, without health insurance, and to make matters even worse, he had just been diagnosed with a brain tumor that impaired his hearing and threatened his overall health. Sounds dismal, doesn t it? And yet life went on, and appearances had to be kept up. Being a coffee aficionado with nothing to do, Gill started spending his days at various Starbucks stores on Manhattan s Upper East Side. Everyday he would put on one of his expensive suits and a pair of handmade shoes, and dressed for success, go from one upscale Starbucks location to another. As Starbucks etiquette required, he would place his laptop and cell phone on the table before him, open up his copy of the New York Times, sip his cafe latte, and wait for the phone calls that never came. One day, a young African-American woman in a Starbucks uniform sat next to him and asked, Would you like a job? Every instinct told him to protest that she had him all wrong. Did she think he was an unemployed old geezer trying to fake success, a loser with nowhere to go, nothing to do? On the contrary, he was a man of leisure who just happened to like good coffee and the NY Times. Instead of responding to her with a veil of lies, however, a long-lost instinct for survival kicked in, and he heard himself saying, Yes, I would very much like a job! (Continued on page 3) Page 2 May 27, 2018

3 (Continued from page 2) That moment of honesty, borne of desperation, was the beginning of personal redemption for Michael Gill. For the first time in a long time, he had to learn again how to live. He began to learn simple but important lessons which came from mastering new skills in the seventh decade of his life, skills like cleaning bathroom stalls, wiping down tables, riding the subway to work on a 90-minute commute each way, and most important, serving others rather than being served. He discovered that the young men and women who worked at Starbucks could be kind, compassionate, and loving to an older co-worker who tried very hard to do his best each day; that treating his customers with hospitality and respect earned him friendship and respect in return; that no honest job or labor was beneath his dignity; that damaged relationships with his adult children could begin to be restored; that his kids rejoiced to see their once proud and stubborn father humble himself. He learned that he had an unused store of wisdom that came from life-experience, owning up to his mistakes, and repenting of them; and that he didn t need to pretend to be something or someone he was not. Starbucks saved his life by teaching him that you really do have to lose your life to save it. And while he does not explicitly address his personal relationship with God in the book, you get the impression that he found inner peace and joy by finally surrendering to Him. In Christ, To help prevent interruption of our liturgies, the door on the west side of church closest to North 22nd St. will be locked after Mass begins. You may enter through the North 22nd door before Mass, but not during Mass. Once Mass has begun, we ask you to please use the front doors of the church. The present date of celebration was set in 1969, in order to follow the Annunciation of the Lord and precede the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. Like most feasts of Mary, it is closely connected with Jesus and his saving work. The more visible actors in the visitation drama (see Luke 1:39-45) are Mary and Elizabeth. However, Jesus and John the Baptist steal the scene in a hidden way. Jesus makes John leap with joy the joy of messianic salvation. Friday, June 1: St. Justin, Martyr: As a young man, Justin was attracted to the school of Plato, but he found that the Christian religion answered the great questions about life and existence better than the philosophers. As a result of this he converted to Catholicism but he remained a philosopher. He became the first Christian philosopher. Justin is also known as an apologist, he defended in his writings the Christian religion against the attacks and misunderstandings of the pagans. Two of his so-called apologies have come down to us; they are addressed to the Roman emperor and to the Senate. For his staunch adherence to the Christian religion, Justin was beheaded in Rome in 165. Saturday, June 2: Sts. Marcellinus and Peter, Martyrs: Marcellinus and Peter are listed among the saints of the Roman Canon though we know very little about them. We know that Marcellinus was a priest and Peter was an exorcist, that is one authorized by the to deal with cases of demonic possession. They were both beheaded during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. Pope Damasus wrote an epitaph apparently based on the report of their executioner, and Constantine erected a basilica over the crypt in which they were buried in Rome.
