2 This Wednesday, November 1, is the feast of All Saints, a holyday of obligation. Our parish will have three Masses for the feast: Wednesday at 8 AM with our school students (there is plenty of room for anyone who wishes to attend); 12 noon; and 2:30 PM (this Mass will take place in Roselawn Cemetery.) At each of these liturgies we will celebrate our communion with God and His saints in heaven. Communion with Christ is something we talk about a lot, and yet at times communion with God in heaven can seem to be a very distant goal. The death of our loved ones, however, serves as a strong reminder that our earthly life is indeed meant to be a journey of faith. Hopefully each of us is heading to that heavenly home which Christ has prepared for us: In my Father s house there are many dwelling places; otherwise, how could I have told you that I was going to prepare a place for you; and then I shall come back to take you with me, that where I am you also may be (John 14:2-4). There is something very comforting about visiting a cemetery to remember our deceased relatives and friends and yet to know at the same time that they are not in the abode of the dead--they are alive with Christ in God. To be with Christ in God... At Manresa House of Retreats in Convent, Louisiana, there is a tiny chapel dedicated to St. Joseph, the patron saint of a happy death. In the chapel, the visitor finds a prayer card which reads: I am alone in this room with Jesus Christ, my Savior. At the end of my life, I shall be alone with him once more, on the day of judgment. On that day I will stand before God to acknowledge the good and the evil I have done. On that day, will Christ stand as my judge or my deliverer? Now is the time to talk with him. Now is the time to ask forgiveness of my sins and the help of his grace. I will begin now to prepare for the day of my death. I have always found that prayer deeply moving. It s so simple and direct, a prayer that anyone, young or old, might offer. And yet it expresses a profound mystery. In his mercy, God has predestined us for salvation through Jesus Christ if we will but choose and accept his gift. Nothing else in life matters so much that it should interfere with this goal, namely, our sharing full communion one day with Christ and with God s saints in heaven. We ought to begin here and now to prepare for the day of our death, imitating the Way of Christ and asking St. Joseph and our Blessed Mother, Mary, to intercede for us that we might receive the grace of a happy death, that is, that we might die in the state of communion with the One who made us for Himself. The month of November is also a special month of prayer for those saints in the making, the souls in purgatory, who are being purified for the beatific vision of God. The doctrine of purgatory is one of the most hopeful mysteries of our Catholic faith, and yet, unfortunately, it is often neglected and misunderstood. What does this doctrine say except that many people die in the state of communion with Christ and yet are not completely prepared to enter fully into his presence? Sin has left its stain, its residue, upon our souls, and we must be purified. And there may also be some sins, venial in nature, that we have never repented of. St. Paul says that we are earthen vessels waiting to be filled with God (2 Corinthians 4:7). It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from their sins (2 Maccabees 12:46). St. Paul, speaking about the day of judgment, also says: That day will make its appearance with fire, and fire will test the quality of each man s work. If the building one has raised on this foundation still stands, he will receive his recompense; if a man s building burns, he will suffer loss. But he himself will be saved, as one fleeing through fire (I Corinthians 3:13-15). The has always understood this statement of Paul as a reference to the purgation or purification which occurs after death. Such purification is the fruit of Christ s work of redemption of sinners. Shortly before her death, St. Monica said to her son, St. Augustine, This only I ask of you, that you should remember me at the altar of the Lord. (Continued on page 3) Page 2 October 29, 2017
3 (Continued from page 2) Finally, I invite you to join us for All Souls Day Mass on Thursday, November 2, at 9 AM to pray for the souls in purgatory; and on Friday, November 3, please join us for our First Friday Mass and Novena to the Sacred Heart at 12 noon. In Christ, New Second Collection on the First Sunday of the Month: For Parish Maintenance Beginning next weekend, November 4-5, we will begin taking up a second collection on the first weekend of each month, following Communion for Parish Maintenance. (Most parishes have a monthly collection for this purpose to help with the cost of maintenance and repairs.) Stewardship envelopes marked Parish Maintenance will begin to arrive in your stewardship envelope packets after the first of the year. In the meantime, checks should be simply made out to Sacred Heart, and all cash and checks placed in the new monthly second collection will be set aside for this purpose. Our ability to address formidable challenges is possible because we serve as part of the great kingdom of God. I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you (Mt 17:20b). Moved by Faith, please pray about your participation in the BAA this year. Last week, Bishop Muench mailed a packet that includes helpful information concerning this year s campaign. In it, we celebrate your generosity during a challenging year for the diocese, and ask how God might bless our Catholic community going forward. All Saints Day is a very old feast. It originated in the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. When martyrdoms increased during the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast day in order to ensure that all martyrs, known and unknown, were properly honored. By the late fourth century, when St. Efrem the Syrian mentioned the feast in a sermon, the feast was widely celebrated. In the early centuries, All Saints was celebrated in the Easter season, tying the celebration of the lives of the saints in with Christ's Resurrection. The current date of November 1 was instituted by Pope Gregory III ( ), when he consecrated a chapel to all the martyrs in Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome and enjoined all the priests of Rome to celebrate the feast annually on this date. Pope Gregory IV ( ) extended the feast to the entire and ordered it to be celebrated on November 1. Thursday, November 2, 2017: All Souls: All Souls Day is a solemn celebration commemorating all those who have died and are now in Purgatory being purified before entering into the presence of God in Heaven. On All Souls Day, we not only remember the dead, but we apply our efforts, through prayer, almsgiving, and the Mass, to their release from Purgatory. There are two plenary indulgences attached to All Souls Day, one for visiting a church and another for visiting a cemetery. While these actions are performed by the living, the merits of the indulgences are applicable only to the souls in Purgatory. Since a plenary indulgence removes all of the temporal punishment for sin, which is the reason why souls are in Purgatory in the first place, applying a plenary indulgence to one of the Holy Souls in Purgatory means that the Holy Soul is released from Purgatory and enters Heaven. Friday November 3, 2017: St. Martin de Porres, Religious: Martin was born in Lima Peru of a Spanish father and a slave mother. He became a lay Dominican brother who spent his life ministering to the poor, especially to African slaves. St. Martin was also known for his deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and was a close friend of St. Rose of Lima. Martin died in He is the patron saint of social justice work and of peoples of mixed race. Saturday, November 4, 2017: St. Charles Borromeo, Bishop: At the young age of twenty-two, St. Charles Borromeo became secretary of state for the Holy See under his uncle, Pope Pius IV. He later became bishop of Milan and a cardinal of the. St. Charles was known for his implementation of the reforms of the Council of Trent in his diocese. He was also the founder of several seminaries, improved education for priests being an important outcome of Trent. St. Charles died in 1584 at the age of forty-six. He is the patron saint of catechists and catechumens Page 6 October 29, 2017
