2 The fall is my favorite time of year. It is rich in so many ways the weather begins to cool and the year begins to wind down It is a contemplative time of year, a time that calls us to put our houses in order, to think about things that matter and to really pay attention to our spiritual lives. On November 1, we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints, the Church s recognition and reflection on all the holy men and women, known and unknown, who have gone before us and are with God. One of the wonderful teachings of the Church is what we call the Communion of Saints this extended family of siblings who are adopted children of the Father, just as we are. This family spans time and space, and its members are joined by fellowship with Christ and the life of the Holy Spirit within us. Reflection on the lives of the saints, therefore, has much to teach us. There is a saint for every person and personality, every vocation, every need, and every age. The saints surround us like a great cloud of witnesses, and one of the easiest and most profitable ways to grow spiritually is to study their lives. Next Saturday, October 28, we celebrate the feast of two apostles: Saints Simon and Jude. These two men are always at the very end of the list of apostles whenever they are mentioned in Scripture (e.g. Luke 6:16) appearing just before Judas Iscariot, who betrayed the Lord. Jude is also known, by the way, as Thaddeus or sometimes as Jude Thaddeus. We don t know very much about either of them, but tradition indicates that they went to Persia together and were martyred there sometime around the year 47 A.D. The Gospels of Matthew and Mark tell us that Simon was born in Cana of Galilee. This is important because it was at Cana that Our Lord performed his first public miracle at a wedding feast there. Some ancient traditions speculate that Simon might have been the bridegroom at that wedding, the young man who ran out of wine. Of course, it was at this wedding feast that Jesus, in response to his mother s request, changed water into wine. Even if Simon was not the bridegroom in question, it s quite possible that this miracle is what first drew his attention to Jesus and led Simon to follow him. The Gospels also tell us that Simon was called a Zealot. This could mean he was a Jewish patriot who opposed the presence of the Romans in Palestine or it could mean simply that he was zealous in following the Jewish law. Whichever is the case, Simon must have been a man willing to live what he believed because he was willing to die a martyr s death for it. St. Jude, the Gospel tells us, was a relative of Jesus, perhaps a cousin. He may also have been the author of the Epistle of Jude which warns against corruption creeping into the Church. This epistle is the shortest book of the New Testament, but it is powerful in its exhortation to Christians to, fight for the faith which was delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3) and to turn away from false teachers and teachings. Beyond this we know almost nothing about St. Jude except that somewhere in the long history of the Church he became the patron saint of impossible causes. He has become the saint who shows very clearly the oft repeated proverb of Jesus that with God all things are possible. (Continued on page 3) Page 2 October 22, 2017

3 (Continued from page 2) There is a statue of St. Jude in many Catholic churches including our own. In our parish, this statue is in the west side of the vestibule. The paint on St. Jude s foot has been worn away from years of parishioners rubbing it as they asked for his intercession in their impossible cause. Sts. Simon and Jude heard the Lord s final command before he ascended to the Father -- a command to carry the Good News of salvation to all the earth. They heeded that command and the blood that they shed for Christ is a continuing sign for us.that Our Lord still calls men and women to be zealous in living their faith, who will risk everything, even their lives, for him. We are Simon and Jude s brothers and sisters in Christ, they call us to believe, as they did, that no matter what God asks of us, even if it seems impossible, it is possible with God. He studied law and practiced as a lawyer in the courts of Naples. In 1416 he entered a Franciscan religious community where he studied under St. Bernardine of Siena, who inspired him to institute the devotion to the holy Name of Jesus. John was a fine preacher and traveled throughout Europe teaching repentance and establishing numerous communities of Franciscan renewal. When Mohammed II threatened Vienna and Rome, St. John, at the age of seventy, was commissioned by Pope Callistus III to preach and lead a crusade against the invading Turks. Marching at the head of a Christian army, he gained victory in the battle of Belgrade in He died shortly after. St. John is the patron saint of jurists. Tuesday, October 24, 2017: St. Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop: Anthony was born in Catalonia, Spain, in 1807, the son of a weaver. He was ordained as a secular priest, but in 1849, he founded the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known today as the Claretians. From 1850 to 1857, Anthony served as the Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba. He had the gift of prophecy and was known as a miracle worker. The secular officials of both Spain and Cuba opposed his work and gifts, and he suffered much because of this. Anthony was a participant in the First Vatican Council, and he died not long after its adjournment due to the looming Franco-Prussian War. Simon and Jude Thaddaeus, Apostles, both preached the Gospel in Mesopotamia and Persia, and were martyred for the faith there in about 47 A.D. We know very little about either saint, but it is believed that St. Jude was the son of Cleophas and the woman named Mary who stood with the Blessed Virgin at the foot of the Cross. St. Jude is also believed to be a cousin to Jesus. He is associated with an epistle that bears his name though few scholars believe he is the actual author. St Simon was sometimes called the Zealot. We do not know if this reflected his adherence to the Zealot party which opposed the presence of the Romans in Palestine or whether it was a reference to his zealousness in following Jewish law.
