2 PAGE TWO SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 2016 VOLUME 88, NUMBER 26 As most of you know, I recently returned from a trip to Italy and to Rome. Of course, one of the most impressive sites in Rome is always St. Peter s Square, the great piazza that lies before the basilica of St. Peter s. If you visit the square you will find a giant statue of St. Peter and St. Paul, the two apostles whose feast we celebrate this Wednesday. In the square, Peter is depicted holding the keys of the kingdom given to him by Jesus himself. The keys denote authority. In giving them to Peter, Jesus makes Peter his vicar on earth, granting him the responsibility and authority to guide and lead his. This authority has passed down to Peter s successors, the popes, in an unbroken line even to our present Pope Francis. Paul, meanwhile, is shown holding a sword, the two edged sword of God s word, a word that frees and enlightens, but also cuts to the bone, a word that comforts the afflicted, but afflicts the comfortable. Together these two men demonstrate that no one person possesses all the gifts of the Spirit needed to effectively guide the on earth. The, as a body, needs all of its parts to live fully. In the Acts of the Apostles, for instance, we see that while Peter came to understand that the good news of Jesus was meant for the Gentiles as well as the Jews (after all, Peter was the first to baptize a Gentile when he gave that sacrament to Cornelius and all his family), it was Paul who would be the Apostle to the Gentiles, aggressively bringing the faith to those not of the Jewish faith all over the Mediterranean world. It was also Paul who stood up to Peter, though he recognized him as head of the, and accused him of behaving hypocritically toward Gentile Christians when Jewish Christians were present [Gal 2: 11-21]. Peter accepted the rebuke which he knew was just. (Peter was a better politician than Paul, and perhaps this led to his dissembling. ) Paul, on the other hand, backed down for no one. He was outspoken in his beliefs and fearless when it came to proclaiming the Faith. My point is this: in God s providence, both men were chosen as pillars of the at its beginning. Each man gave something invaluable to the Simon Peter, the rugged fisherman who loved deeply, who at times failed miserably, but who possessed a natural gift for leadership, became a fisher of men. Paul, the well-educated Pharisee, a Roman citizen and one-time persecutor of Christians, became a tireless missionary for the faith he had once tried to destroy. Both men, gifted by the Spirit in different ways, were chosen by God to serve his and lead it in the critical early years of its foundation and growth. Both men would die in the city of Rome for their Lord and for the he founded, their lives and names joined together forever by their calls. As we approach the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul, we should remember to pray for the successors of these Apostles: our Holy Father, Pope Francis, and all bishops. To lead a with over a billion members spread throughout the world and facing wildly different challenges and needs is a daunting task and a heavy burden. May our Pope and his bishops serve Christ faithfully and serve all God s children with love and compassion, and may we daily offer our intercessions for their needs and intentions. In Christ,
