Please arrange your schedules and try to participate in the retreat fully. Tell your friends and invite them too for the retreat. Rev. Fr. Davis Chittilappally who donated his kidney and saved one person from immediate death, is the preacher for our retreat. So naturally he would be preaching what he is living and it would be all the more powerful. POTHUYOGAM Our annual general body meeting is on February 21st Sunday after second holy mass. All the active members of our church are supposed to participate in the Pothuyogam. The main agendas are: 1) Presenting the annual accounts of ) Presenting the budget Please help the church by paying all the dues before the general body. PARISH HALL PROJECT As I have announced last Sunday we are going forward with our parish hall project. At present we have to select a general contractor and with the contracting companies name apply for permission from the city. We have three weeks to find our contractor. One important thing while selecting the contractor is the company should be recognized by the Archdiocese of Miami. Any member of parish who knows renowned companies could recommend them to the church. YOUTH GET TOGETHER On this Sunday (02/07/2016) we have a youth meet with free lunch after the second mass. Children from 12 and up are supposed to participate in the meeting. It would be over by 1:30pm. ASH MONDAY We begin the great season of lent on coming Monday (8th February). For your convenience we have two masses on that day one at 8:30am and another in the evening at 7:00. Ash crosses on our foreheads symbolize our contrite heart. Let us try to enter into our Lenten celebrations by asking the mercy of our Lord. 3 CCD CORNER Year Of Mercy 1 " Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."(hebrew 4:16) The year of mercy reminds us to be generous, kind, and love unconditionally throughout our Catholic life. Mercy is the compassion or forgiveness shown to someone by whom who has the power to punish or harm. After our life on earth, we are remembered through our gracious deeds of helping our fellow brothers and sisters. We all want mercy but we are not able to be merciful to others. How can we show others, the mercy of God? Jesus said, " Love one another." If you love someone we can never be rude to them, only merciful. To me, Mother Teresa is a perfect example of mercy. She practiced what she preached. For Mother Teresa said " Not all of us can do great things but we can do small things with great love." Though there are different ways we can show mercy, through the Corporal Works of Mercy, Spiritual Works of Mercy and prayer, our lives become a reflection of God's compassion and love for the world. Lord be merciful to your children and the whole world. We pray that you show your mercy to those who suffer and die for your name. Be compassionate to those affected by the devastating acts of ISIS. Show your love to those who think they are alone. By Evelin Bennis 10 th Grade Year Of Mercy 2 Did you know that this Jubilee Year of Mercy is called an Extraordinary Jubilee? This Jubilee Year of Mercy is unique because it occurs outside the ordinary cycle of jubilees. The tradition of setting jubilee years can be seen in the bible in the book of Leviticus when Moses was commanded to set every fiftieth year as a year of restoration. One of the major events happening in this Year of Mercy is the opening of the Holy Doors. The Holy Doors located in Saint Peters Basilica contain sixteen panels that portray major events and gospel stories from the bible such as the exile of Adam and Eve to the finding of the lost sheep by the good shepherd. These Holy Doors are located in major basilicas around the world and all the faithful who enter through these doors are said to have entered into presence of God to receive his grace and mercy. The official Vatican website also contains more information on the Jubilee Year of Mercy and various resources on the parables and psalms of mercy to help inspire us to be more merciful throughout the year. By Sneha Joseph 11 th Grade Through the Syro Malabar Qurbana 5 -Sr. Jolly Maria, SABS Preparatory part of the strongest maladaptive Qurbana is with two kinds of preparation 1) material preparation 2) spiritual preparation. Material preparation includes preparation of bread and vine (body and blood), taking them to the altar, placing on the altar, covering them with sosapa. The spiritual preparation includes washing the hands, creed, entry to the madbaha by celebrant. The preparatory part includes other elements like placing of Sleeva and gospel, sashtangapranamam etc. We are trying to understand the meanings of different elements in the preparatory phase. Sashtangapranamam is the kissing of the sosapa 12 times, kept in the midst of the hykala. Sosapa is the sign of the cover of the tomb of isho, and the tomb itself. It is the sign of the presence of ruha (holy spirit) since the cloth kept in the tomb of Isho is the sign of the resurrection of lord. With the resurrection of lord the presence of ruha de qudisa is experienced. That is why we keep sosapa on the altar as the sign of ruha. As in other eastern churches we were keeping it on the altar always (not just for Qurbana) this sosapa is carried to the center of hykala and doing the ceremony of sashtangapranamam. Gospel is the sign of risen lord on the altar. It is not fair to keep the bible on the altar instead of gospel. Because gospel is the sign of risen lord. The sacrifice is offered to god the father in the center of altar. Thus the presence of trinity is presented in the altar. So altar becomes the seat or thronos of the Holy Trinity. So sosapa is to be kept permanently on the altar. Because thronos is the permanent presence of holy trinity. The sosapa is kept on the altar in a folded manner which says the resurrection of lord. The cloth kept folded in tomb is one of the witnesses of the resurrection of lord. As so the folded sosapa kept always on the altar shows the risurrection of lord. Thus altar becomes the tomb of the risen lord. The empty tomb prayer denotes the dignity of priesthood and with the invocation of priest the ruha is coming down to dwelling with the people and body and blood. Celebrant bows down 12 times and kisses on the sosapa which shows the presence of 12 apostles. Since the sashtangapranamam is after placing the sleeva and gospel on the altar in two sides which has the reference of the ascension of lord to the father. With his heavenly entry ruha comes down that is Pentecost. This ceremony can be identified with the Pentecost experience. Then bowing down priest invokes the holy spirit among the sacred mysteries and worshiping community. It is closely related to the epiclesis (ruha kshena prarthana at the end of anaphora. And also it has a reference to the prayer of Isho Mesiha in the Gethsemane before his passion. The coming down to the near of the minister who is bowing down with the prayer by the deacons shows the ministry of consoling Isho at his prayer in Gethsemane. Thus this rite is a very rich celebration of the strongest maladaptive Raza. We are trying to avoid such rich rites in our Qurbana. This is the special in Mar Thoma Nazrani Qurbana.
