6 BLESSING OF THE BIKES It s time to prepare for the Blessing of the Bikes I am again coordinating efforts for the Mooseriders to find deacons who would be willing to assist in the Prayer Service/Blessing on Sunday, May 19th (time 1:00 PM approx) at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, OH.rain date is Sunday, May 26th. We are going to need quite a few deacons willing to participate in the prayer service and help bless the bikes following the service - it is a Catholic blessing...this will be their 13th year and the celebration planned will be bigger/better than ever. The Mooseriders are a philanthropic organization who do much work for charity, raising funds for the Neumann Center, Make a Wish Foundation, and quite a few other charities. I attend the monthly coordination meetings and I report back to our volunteer deacons as to where we are with plans. Past year s blessings have been extraordinary and the deacons who have participated have come away with a feeling of being part of something spiritually uplifting. The bikers and their families are a wonderful group of people who greatly appreciate us taking part in something that means a great deal to them. They are always very appreciative of the Blessing of the Bikes and they look forward to it every year. Fr Dale Peterka from Cincinnati and quite a few deacons from the Archdiocese have participated in the blessing in past years (myself included). Because of the sheer number of bikes to bless (the Mooseriders estimate over 7,000 bikes were there last year and they expect more in 2013). I am hoping we ll be able to get deacons willing to help us out. It only takes about 1-1 ½ hours and the reward in just seeing the appreciation of the bikers is terrific it is always a WOW event for me and we sure could more use help. Every deacon who has participated in the past has come away with more than they gave to this function. If anyone is interested in helping, they can contact me by at qacohio@sbcglobal.net. Thanks Greg Basic information concerning the Blessing of the Bikes DATE: Sunday, May 19, 2013 (Rain Date: Sunday, May 26th) PLACE: Welcome Stadium Dayton, Ohio TIME: 1:00 PM (Blessing of the Bikes). 11 NATIONAL DIACONATE INSTITUTE FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION NDICE It s time to register for the longest-running continuing education session for U.S. deacons! On Sunday, July 21 the 39th annual NDICE will begin, and attendees can expect another outstanding session. Once again, the 2013 NDICE will be held on the beautiful campus of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The 2013 session will end on Wednesday, July 24. The theme for the 2013 NDICE is Deacon: Teacher of the Faith by Word and Deed. Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Binzer of Cincinnati will be the celebrant of the opening Mass on Sunday evening, to be followed by the opening keynote address by Mr. Daniel Mulhall, former Assistant Secretary for Catechesis and Inculturation for the USCCB. Outstanding presenters have been confirmed for this year s session, including Deacon Thomas Winninger, Sr. Maureen Sullivan, and Dr. Sean Reynolds, and many more! And once again, the hilarious Deacon Follies will be a part of NDICE! Each year, hundreds of deacons and deacon candidates and their wives travel to NDICE for great presentations in a relaxing atmosphere. Last year, attendees enjoyed the new dorm and dining hall, and the many returning attendees and those attending for the first time can look forward to another pleasant education experience. NDICE has always been a great opportunity to share in fellowship with deacons from across the country as well. Twenty-six states were represented at the 2012 NDICE, making it a true national event. Twenty Continuing Education Credits (CEU s) are awarded to attendees, fulfilling the continuing education requirements of most U.S. dioceses. Deacon Jeff Hall 11
