6 Effective January 1, 2014, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is changing the way it performs background checks for individuals. Everyone MUST have new background checks done, either electronically and / or through fingerprinting every five (5) years. The following seven steps are those that individuals and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati must follow to comply with the Archdiocese Decree on Child Protection. These steps must be completed in the following order: 1. Register with VIRTUS a. Every person must first create a VIRTUS User Account and password. Individuals must retain and safeguard this information as it will be required to access your information later. b. After creating a User Account, all persons must register in advance for a VIRTUS Session. 2. Attend a VIRTUS Protecting Godʼs Children Training Session a. Individuals must be sure to sign-in when arriving at the VIRTUS Training location. 3. All VIRTUS Facilitators Must Return Sign-In Sheets to Archdiocese Offices a. Training location Facilitators are responsible for the timely submission of all VIRTUS Session sign-in sheets to the Office of Safe Environment for Protection of Children and Youth. 4. User VIRTUS Account is Activated a. Following receipt of the sign-in sheets, the Archdiocese Office of Safe Environment for Protection of Children and Youth will activate VIRTUS User Accounts for persons who signed in at the Sessions. b. Individuals will then receive s from VIRTUS notifying them that their accounts are active. c. Individuals can now proceed to SELECTiON.COM to do their background checks. NB: PLEASE LIST ARCHDIOCESAN DEACON (Cincinnati) as one of your Additional Locations 5. Individuals proceed online to SELECTiON.COM a. You CANNOT proceed to this step unless step 4 above has been completed! b. The method of background check is determined by the needs of the Individual. i. Certain individuals that are only volunteering require only an electronic records search by SELECTiON.COM. This can be completed through the online process at SELECTiON.COM (Individuals can request that results of their online background checks be sent to their homes at the time of initiating the check with SELECTiON.COM ). ii. If you are a Cleric, Religious, School, Parish or Archdiocese employee, or someone certified by the Ohio Department of Education, you MUST be background checked through fingerprinting. iii. Please see this link: for help in determining your background check requirements. 6. SELECTiON.COM will electronically synchronize and send its background check results to VIRTUS 6
7 7. VIRTUS will then electronically upload each individualʼs data to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Master Reports a. Anyone who would like to receive a copy of his / her background check results through fingerprinting must request a copy of those results in writing. The results will be mailed back to the address listed in VIRTUS. Basic Questions How is this procedure different from what we ve been doing before? Teachers, staff and clerics are required to be fingerprinted every five years. Beginning January 1, 2014, volunteers will not have to be fingerprinted, but they will have to do a background check with Selection.com from within their VIRTUS account. Who? As of 1/1/2014 Online Background Check and Fingerprints: Teachers, Clerics, Staff will need electronic online background checks (Background Checks Online within your VIRTUS account under Toolbox tab) and Fingerprinting (BCI). Fingerprint Locations You can go to the offices of Selection.com in Glendale: 155 Tri County Pkwy Cincinnati, OH Monday- Friday: 8AM-5PM or the Middletown location at: 1711 Runway Drive Middletown, OH Sunday- Saturday: 8AM-4PM How much? The on-line background check is $25. The cost of BCII fingerprint checks will be $30. FBI fingerprints will be $32 for people who have lived outside the state of Ohio in the last 5 years. 10 PREACHING the MYSTERY of FAITH August 23, 2014 PREACHING the MYSTERY of FAITH A Workshop for Deacons Presented by: Deacon David Shea Not only the homily has to be nourished by the word of God. All evangelization is based on that word, listened to, meditated upon, lived, celebrated and witnessed to. The sacred Scriptures are the very source of evangelization. Consequently, we need to be constantly trained in hearing the word. The Church does not evangelize unless she constantly lets herself be evangelized. It is indispensable that the word of God be ever more fully at the heart of every ecclesial activity. God s word, listened to and celebrated, above all in the Eucharist, nourishes and inwardly strengthens Christians, enabling them to offer an authentic witness to the Gospel in daily life.
