LAWRENCE 2012 ARE YOU REGISTERED? The Feast of St. Lawrence will be celebrated by the Deacon Community on August 12, It will be held at St. John Neumann Church in Cincinnati and will start with Mass at 5:00 p.m. with Bishop Joseph Binzer as our presider. Mass will be followed by dinner. Mark this on your calendar now! The current list of registrants is attached ARE YOU ON IT! PREACHING THE SUNDAY HOMILY WORKSHOP FOR DEACONS Deacon Dave Shea will help us explore the critical issues of the Sunday homily: Clarity, Relevance, Inspiration and Motivation. We ll examine the hard data on what parishioners want in the Sunday homily and in the preacher; what they are receiving; how they evaluate what they re hearing and what they think is missing. For this and more, plan on attending this workshop on August 18, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. at St. Peter, Huber Heights. Registration materials and additional information was mailed in May. The current list of registrants is attached ARE YOU ON IT! OUT OF OFFICE I will be out of the office for 1 week in August for a vacation, and I want to let you know ahead of time in case you know that you will need a Letter of Good Standing or some other assistance which I can provide while I am in. The dates I will be gone are: August 3-9. I will probably not have access to my s and phone calls during my time away. I may not be able to respond until I return to the office. NDICE is scheduled for July 21-24, Please consider taking part in it next year. THE SUMMIT 2012: REVITALIZING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH The Summit link is now up on the Archdiocesan front page. The Steering Committee has done an outstanding job putting together what I expect to be a dynamic two day experience. Leaders from across the Archdiocese will gather with Archbishop Schnurr and Bishop Binzer not only to explore the difficult task of Revitalizing the Domestic Church, but also to celebrate who we are together as the Church of Cincinnati as people called to spread the Gospel message to the 19 counties of SW Ohio. I hope you can participate on October 1 & 2, 2012 at the Dayton Convention Center. PORTA FIDEI: PREPARING FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH On August 25 th, the Athenaeum of Ohio Lay Pastoral Ministry Program will offer a day of formation centered on the Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei, which calls the faithful to observe a year of Faith in The day will include a keynote address by the Athenaeum Dean, Rev. Earl K. Fernandes, and the opportunity to attend two workshops led by Athenaeum faculty. These workshops, on the topics of Eucharistic Spirituality, Vatican II, Mary, the Catechism, Personal Testimony and Faith/Reason, will offer insights, inspiration and practical ways to help Catholics grow in faith during the Year of Faith. The event runs from 9:30-3:00 at the Athenaeum Bartlett Center, 6616 Beechmont Avenue, Cincinnati. The $50 fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch and materials. Pre-registration required. Bob s number is ; Pam s number is Deacon Kim Cohen s new FLORIDA address is: 9397 Midnight Pass Rd., Apt. 704S; Sarasota, FL Deacon Ken & Mary Jane DeHanes new address is: 201 Doublegate, Unit I; Milford, OH 45150; (513) Deacon Fred & Melissa Merritt s new address is: 5932 Rocky Pass, West Chester, OH Their phone number is unchanged. PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS Deacon Candidate Dale and Debbie De Brosse and their family. Debbie s mother, Mrs. Marcella Bent, (age 91) suffered a fall and broke her hip around the end of June. She also had Alzheimer s and passed away on July 16. Deacon John & Colleen Gerke and their family. Richard Kirby, Colleen Gerke s stepfather, passed away on July 19 in Bellefontaine. Deacon Conrad and Nancy Kolis and their family. Nancy s father Ed Klosterman has been in skilled nursing for several weeks, and he took a turn for the worse on July 16. On July 18, things started to turn around, and now he seems to be about where he was a week ago. With kidney and heart issues, he knows that the doctors were giving him only about a year or so, barring any sudden changes. Please include Nancy s mother Ruth in those prayers. She's dealing with some health issues of her own, though not lifethreatening. Those health issues make this more difficult for her than it already would be. Deacon Susano and Elisa Mascorro and their family. Elisa had fallen and she broke three ribs. She returned home on July 19 where she will continue her healing. Please prayer for a quick and effective healing process. Deacon John and Mary Lynn Quattrone and their family. John underwent back surgery on July 26 for realignment and fusion of vertebrae. John s back surgery went very well and he returned home on July 26. The numbness in his leg is gone. He is confined to home and relative inactivity for the next month or so. John and Mary Lynn thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Deacon David & Linda Shaffer and their family. David s brother Bob, age 60, died on July 23 quite unexpectedly but of natural causes. He lived in Florida near David s other brother and their mother. And anyone who is suffering who is not noted above and of whom I am unaware. May they know that we will include them and their needs in our prayers. PRAYER UPDATES Deacon Ray and Mary Kroger's son has returned to work, but he is not completely out of the woods yet. 3
