The dates and locations for these meetings are: Dayton Wednesday May 7, 2014 St. Helen, Dayton Smith Building Cincinnati Wednesday May 14, 2014 St. Matthias, Cincinnati Parish Hall North Tuesday May 20, 2014 Spiritual Center of Maria Stein ONGOING FORMATION ANNUAL REPORT The Ongoing Formation Annual Report is again included with this Memo. Please complete it and mail it to the Office of the Diaconate. It is necessary for all deacons who are not listed as being in Senior Status or on a leave of absence to complete the Annual Report and return it by January 31. The Continuing Formation requirements can be found on pages of the Permanent Deacon Handbook. When I receive a request for a Letter of Good Standing, I am required to check the deacon s file to be sure he is indeed up-to-date with the Continuing Formation requirements of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. The PDF version of this form can be found on the Diaconate Office web page. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. DEACON COUPLES RETREAT DATE CHANGE Due to circumstances not under our control, the date for the retreat for Deacon Couples has been moved from January to Friday, Feb. 28 (begins 6:00 p.m.) and Saturday, March. 1 (ends 3:00 p.m.) at Bergamo. Jeanne Hunt will be the retreat facilitator, and the title for the retreat is The Five Attitudes Retreat. Further information is being mailed. Due to limited space there are only rooms for 10 couples. ANNIVERSARY CORRECTION The 50 th wedding anniversary of Deacon Bill & Jean Shaeffer is September 6, 1964, not September 8 as was incorrectly noted in the December Deacon Memo. 1

2 ST. STEPHEN S APPEAL UPDATE At this time $3,375 has been donated to the Deacon Memorial Fund through the St. Stephen s Appeal. Many thanks to the generosity of our donors. VIRTUS CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING REQUIRED Everyone in the Archdiocese will be required to be trained/re-trained using VIRTUS regardless of when you had been previously trained using our old materials and video. The deadline for completing all VIRTUS re-training is June 30, That allows SIX MONTHS TO COMPLETE VIRTUS training across the Archdiocese. The loss of your faculties may be on the line until you successfully complete VIRTUS training and remain current with the bulletins! ALL DEACONS AND DEACON CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE THIS NEW TRAINING PROGRAM AND KEEP CURRENT WITH THE MONTHLY BULLETINS EVEN IF UNASSIGNED OR IN SENIOR STATUS. Due to time constraints, there will be no special VIRTUS training for deacons or deacon candidates. Please check the Archdiocesan web page ( for training sites, dates and times near you. After July 1, 2014, anyone who falls three or more Bulletins behind will be required to attend another full three hour VIRTUS Training Session. ALSO, A NEW FINGERPRINTING RULE GOES INTO EFFECT ON JULY 1, Everyone will need to be refingerprinted every 5 years. If you haven t been fingerprinted within the last 5 years, you may want to get it done by then. DIRECTORY UPDATE Deacon Don Meyer s new address is: themeyer10@gmail.com. Deacon Mark Stasiak s new address is: mstasiak@fuse.net THANK YOU NOTE I would like to thank the Deacon Community for remembering my birthday with all the wonderful birthday cards. It truly warmed my heart that you thought of me on my special day. Blessings to all. Mary Miller PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS Dottie Brockmann, widow of Deacon Ed Brockmann, and her family. Dottie s 40 year old son Tim has been diagnosed with cancer. The doctors are in the process of trying to find the appropriate chemotherapy treatment. Dottie was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati on December 17 for shortness of breath. Deacon Ron & Brenda Risch and their family. Ron underwent outpatient surgery on December 20 to remove a growth on his right kidney. Surgery became a little more complicated than was first thought, a tumor was found inside his bladder and that was removed first; a biopsy is being done. The end result may require a hospital stay when he goes in to take care of the kidney. Deacon Joe and Joan Subler and their family. Joan s father Al Ness passed away on December 17. And anyone who is suffering who is not noted above and of whom I am unaware. May they know that we will include them and their needs in our prayers. 2

3 PRAYER REQUEST UPDATES Deacon Bob and Joan Collins and their family. Bob underwent rotator cuff surgery on December 13 and is doing well. Deacon Bob Crook is still awaiting a bone marrow transplant. He has been placed on a worldwide donor list. If you feel that you would want to and be able to be a bone marrow donor or know of anyone who would, Bob gave me this site to visit: Please continue to keep Bob, Leah and their family in your prayers. Joan Michael's 20 year old granddaughter, Allyson Goldeck, who gave birth to a healthy baby the week before Thanksgiving, got an infection at the hospital and suffered a stroke on November 26, remains at Drake Hospital in Cincinnati for her recovery and may be there for awhile yet. Current status for Deacon Candidate Hans Schade is that after three consecutive upticks in tumor markers (not the right direction), the numbers as of early December receded slightly, which is great news! The most recent PET scan showed zero hyper-metabolic activity. Please continue to keep Hans, Dory and their family in your prayers. NECROLOGY January 4, 2008 Deacon Arthur Runnels Ordained 9/26/76 January 5, 1997 Juanita McCormick January 5, 2001 Mary Borgerding Jamuary 8, 1995 Deacon Paul Hagedorn Ordained 9/26/76 January 9, 1991 Martha Brunner January 12, 2007 Deacon Raymond Blum Ordained 12/10/72 January 15, 1986 Deacon August Hehemann, Jr. Ordained 9/25/76 January 19, 2009 Deacon Robert Correale Ordained 9/26/98 January 20, 1983 Deacon Ervin Henderson. Jr. Ordained 7/3/82 January 24, 1972 Deacon Alphonso Herman Ordained 8/2/71 BLESSING OF THE BIKES 2014 Nothing like starting reminders early. Our Blessing Committee had its first meeting for the 2014 Blessing of the bikes. The Blessing is always held on the 3 rd Sunday in May so as not to interfere with Mothers Day. So it s time to gather deacon volunteers. Here are the details: It s time to prepare for the Blessing of the Bikes I am again coordinating efforts for the Mooseriders to find deacons who would be willing to assist in the Prayer Service/Blessing on Sunday, May 18, 2014 (time 1:00 p.m. approx) at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, OH.rain date is Sunday, May 25, We ll need quite a few deacons willing to participate in the prayer service and help bless the bikes following the service - I will send out the scripts when everything is put together sometime in early This will be the 14th year and the celebration promises to be bigger/better than ever. The Mooseriders are a philanthropic organization who do much work for charity, raising funds for the Neumann Center, Make a Wish Foundation, and quite a few other charities. I attend the monthly coordination meetings and I report back to our volunteer deacons as to where we are with plans. Past year s blessings have been extraordinary and the deacons who have participated have come away with a feeling of being part of something spiritually uplifting. The bikers and their families are a wonderful group of people who greatly appreciate us taking part in something that means a great deal to them. They are always very appreciative of the Blessing of the Bikes and they look forward to it every year. Fr. Dale Peterka from Cincinnati and quite a few deacons from the Archdiocese have participated in the blessing in past years (myself included). Because of the sheer number of bikes to bless (the Mooseriders estimated almost 10,000 bikes were there in 2013 and they expect to break that record in 2014), I m hoping to have deacons willing to help out. It only takes about 1-1 ½ hours and the reward in just seeing the appreciation of the bikers is terrific it is always a WOW event for me and we sure could use more help. Every deacon who has participated in the past has come away with more than they gave to this function. Anyone interested in helping, can contact me by at qacohio@sbcglobal.net. Thanks Deacon Greg Cecere 3
