1 MEMO To: Deacon Community From: Deacon Dave Profitt Subject: Monthly Updates Date: July, 2014 To the Deacon Community: Whenever there is a change at the top of an organization, there s always some angst about what will be the direction of the office going forward. Now that Barry has begun his well-earned retirement, that seems to be a common question that I continue to get not only from deacons but other clergy as well. One of the driving factors is the deeper understanding of the diaconate itself in the life of the Church. Recently, I attended training at the National Directory Institute which focuses on the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States. This is the guiding document put forth by the USCCB and was recently renewed for 5 years by USCCB in New Orleans. If you haven t read it, you should. Out of this training, a clearer picture of what the diaconate should look like emerges. The good news is that we are in compliance with the document and no drastic changes are needed. Barry did a great job of building the platform and it is now up to me to move it further along. I will be looking at pre-ordination items more deeply including our aspirancy program and how we prepare both husbands and wives for the diaconate. In addition, I am getting some valuable input from the Athenaeum on how we may better prepare men coming into candidacy. There are some changes that I will make for the benefit of the deacon office going forward. We need to embrace technology more because it allows us to be better stewards for the Church. I will be moving signups to the diaconate website so we can cut down on the amount of paper and postage we use. There will be more communications coming via and the website. We will utilize live streaming from the Athenaeum to do continuing education so that all deacons can benefit from the seminary. Continuing education will be an emphasis going forward. We owe it to the people of God to keep up with changing trends in ministry and preparing ourselves to engage in the new evangelization. Proclaim 2014 on October 6 th & 7 th will be an outstanding opportunity to learn more about this. I would encourage everyone to attend. As a deacon, everything that I m encouraging you to do is something that I m doing as well. I have continuing education requirements, Virtus requirements (in 2 dioceses) and retreat requirements. These are not optional and must be met on an annual basis. We agreed to these things at ordination and it is our obligation to see that they are done. Finally, I m in awe at the wonderful work you do on behalf of the Church. I m honored to be a part of the Archdiocese and know that I stand ready to assist you in whatever way I can. I m not your boss so please don t say that. I m your representative to the Archbishop and his representative back to you. Let s continue to be engaged and serve the people of God to the best of our ability. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I m always willing to talk. May God continue to bless you in your ministry. 1

9 PREACHING the MYSTERY of FAITH August 23, 2014 PREACHING the MYSTERY of FAITH A Workshop for Deacons Presented by: Deacon David Shea Not only the homily has to be nourished by the word of God. All evangelization is based on that word, listened to, meditated upon, lived, celebrated and witnessed to. The sacred Scriptures are the very source of evangelization. Consequently, we need to be constantly trained in hearing the word. The Church does not evangelize unless she constantly lets herself be evangelized. It is indispensable that the word of God be ever more fully at the heart of every ecclesial activity. God s word, listened to and celebrated, above all in the Eucharist, nourishes and inwardly strengthens Christians, enabling them to offer an authentic witness to the Gospel in daily life. 12 ARCHDIOCESE OF CINCINNATI OFFICE OF THE DIACONATE 100 E. EIGHTH STREET CINCINNATI, OH The Way, the Truth, the Life I am the way, the truth and the life (Jn 14:6). The Lord sums up the substance of our faith in three words. First-century Christians took those words and made them their Way, foundation and model of their belief and practice (Acts 2:42): They keep giving incessant, constant attention to the teaching of the Apostles (the Creed), to caring for one another in Christ s love (koinonia), to the Breaking of Bread (Eucharist) and to the prayers (with emphasis on the Psalms). Today s parish continues the great tradition. We will break open those three words and apply them to our own lives and apostolates. Rev.
