2 DIRECTORY UPDATE Dorothy Brockmann s new address is: 3766 Benhill Dr. Cincinnati, OH Deacon Jeff Merrell s new address is: jmerrel2@roadrunner.com Deacon Chuck Wright s new address is: cwright106@att.net. FROM THE GLASSMEYER FAMILY Dear Archdiocese of Cincinnati Priests and Deacons, Our deeply loved dad, Deacon Bob Glassmeyer, taught his children and grandchildren how to live and just as gracefully taught us how to die! So it was with saddened heart that we arrived at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church on 8/31/13 for his Mass of Christian Burial. The sight of such an amazingly large turnout of religious men, vested for the Mass, along with the outpouring of love, respect and support from the priests and deacons, both present and unable to attend, brought an air of calmness and joy to our family! You can only begin to imagine how proud we were to be part of this most prestigious farewell for Dad! We always knew dad was a man of faith, justness and love. Apparently you also knew him to exemplify these same qualities! Please accept our most heartfelt gratitude for your concern and support for Dad and our family! Most respectfully, Deacon Bob's family Nancy Meyrose, Judy Sullivan, Ken Glassmeyer, Mary Jo Mills, Gail Pryse, 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS Deacon Jerry & Jeanie Cain and their family. Jerry s brother Jim passed away on September 3. Deacon Paul and Juanita Richardson and their family. Paul s brother Mike underwent brain surgery on September 23 in Miami Valley Hospital. Tests indicated that there were two masses on his brain, and one was causing disorientation and an inability to respond orally. The tumor is cancerous and aggressive. Treatment will follow soon. Paul appreciates your prayers. Deacon Aspirant Charlie and Linda Roemer and their family. Linda was taken to the hospital on September 10. She had a bladder infection which has gotten into her blood stream. She has shown some signs of improvement and then the fever returns. Linda returned home from the hospital the evening of September 13 and is doing well. And anyone who is suffering who is not noted above and of whom I am unaware. May they know that we will include them and their needs in our prayers. PRAYER REQUEST UPDATES Deacon John Collins is home and undergoing outpatient physical therapy following his total knee replacement surgery. Deacon Bob Crook is still awaiting a bone marrow transplant. He has been placed on a worldwide donor list. If you feel that you would want and be able to be a bone marrow donor or know of anyone who would, Bob gave me this site to visit: Please continue to keep Bob, Leah and their family in your prayers. Deacon Jim Geraci is home, but he tires easily as he tries to build up his strength. Please continue to keep Jim and Janet in your prayers. 2
3 Deacon Michael Leo s two brothers are in need of your prayers. Jerry Leo had successful hip surgery on August 20, and Dave Leo had a tumor removed from his lung on August 21. Both are home recovering. On September 10 Deacon Aspirant Johannes Schade had his 2nd surgery, this time to remove the section of colon where the cancer grew, about 12 inches. That night he sat in a chair for 30 minutes. He did a couple of laps around the floor on September 11. His pain is well under control. The Doctor was pleased again with how things are going. On September 15 he was able to have his first solid food and returned home early in the afternoon, and enjoyed a quiet day at home. On September 26 he saw the surgeon for a follow-up visit. He was happy with how things are going. He presented the pathology report for the colon--the entire tumor was removed from the colon, and the outer ends of that section were negative for cancer cells. During surgery, he also removed 20 lymph nodes for testing and 3 came back positive for cancer, which is not really a big surprise. On October 2 Hans has an appointment with the oncologist to discuss next steps, and October 3 he sees the surgeon. Overall, Johannes is doing well, but is finding this surgery more difficult to recover from than the first one. We continue to be very grateful for all of you prayers and support!! Hans & Dory NECROLOGY October 2, 1996 Deacon Orien Stokes, Jr. Ordained 7/3/82 October 3, 1999 Deacon Thomas Kiley Ordained 7/28/79 October 1, 1997 Alice Schmiesing October 3, 2008 Deacon Paul Reeves Ordained 7/3/82 October 18, 2006 Deacon Arthur Kronenberger Ordained 7/25/76 October 28, 2005 Dottie Westerfield October 31, 2009 Deacon John Taylor Ordained 6/20/87 BLESSING OF THE BIKES 2014 Nothing like starting reminders early. Our Blessing Committee had its first meeting for the 2014 Blessing of the bikes. The Blessing is always held on the 3 rd Sunday in May so as not to interfere with Mother s Day. So it s time to gather deacon volunteers. Here are the details... It s time to prepare for the Blessing of the Bikes I am again coordinating efforts for the Mooseriders to find deacons who would be willing to assist in the Prayer Service/Blessing on Sunday, May 18, 2014 (time 1:00 PM approx.) at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, OH.rain date is Sunday, May 25, We ll need quite a few deacons willing to participate in the prayer service and help bless the bikes following the service - I will send out the scripts when everything is put together sometime in early This will be the 14th year and the celebration promises to be bigger/better than ever. The Mooseriders are a philanthropic organization who do much work for charity, raising funds for the Neumann Center, Make a Wish Foundation, and quite a few other charities. I attend the monthly coordination meetings and I report back to our volunteer deacons as to where we are with plans. Past year s blessings have been extraordinary and the deacons who have participated have come away with a feeling of being part of something spiritually uplifting. The bikers and their families are a wonderful group of people who greatly appreciate us taking part in something that means a great deal to them. They are always very appreciative of the Blessing of the Bikes and they look forward to it every year. Fr Dale Peterka from Cincinnati and quite a few deacons from the Archdiocese have participated in the blessing in past years (myself included). Because of the sheer number of bikes to bless (the Mooseriders estimated almost 10,000 bikes were there in 2013 and they expect to break that record in 2014), I m hoping to have deacons willing to help out. It only takes about 1-1 ½ hours and the reward in just seeing the appreciation of the bikers is terrific it is always a WOW event for me and we sure could more use help. Every deacon who has participated in the past has come away with more than they gave to this function. Anyone interested in helping, can contact me by at qacohio@sbcglobal.net. Thanks Deacon Greg Cecere 3
