Deacon John Holthaus has finished radiation. He will then begin chemotherapy in about a week. John goes into the parish office to work when possible. Deacon Aspirant Johannes Schade underwent successful liver surgery on August 6 at Miami Valley Hospital. Nine tumors were removed; three were cut out and six were ablated. The surgeon biopsied four of the tumors; three were completely clear and one showed signs of cancer which was not a surprise. He was in surgery for 5 hours and all went as planned. He was discharged from the hospital on August 12. He is doing well, though weak and of course he tires quickly. His pain is well managed. The surgery to remove the primary tumor in the colon will be done on September 10, followed by more chemotherapy. Please continue to keep Johannes, Dory and their family in your prayers. A NOTE OF THANKS Dear Members of the Diaconate Community, Thank you for your prayers, support, cards and sympathy during the battle with cancer and the death of my son, David Gaerke. 6 Deacon Ned Ostendorf ordained a deacon of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in 1991 and who passed away on August 16, 2009, produced much art during his lifetime. Ned s widow Kay and their family have donated some of Ned s work to the University of Dayton. This portion of Ned s art is being exhibited at the Marian Library at UD. It would be a wonderful way to spend some prayerful time quietly viewing this exhibit. Remember Ned, Kay and their family as you view Where Art meets Religion. Kay will be coming from her home in Georgia to be at the exhibit on June 18 at 7:00 p.m. For more information you can go to 6
7 WHO IS A DEACON? WHAT DOES A DEACON DO? WHY DO WE NEED DEACONS? You are cordially invited to a meeting of interested men (and wives) to learn more about the role of deacons in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. If you have never attended an information meeting about the diaconate, this meeting will be very helpful as you consider a vocation to the diaconate or would just like to learn more about the ministry of deacons in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Besides discussing the role of deacons (and wives), the meetings will include information about the requirements for admission into the Deacon Formation Program. There will also be an explanation of the ongoing process of discernment to the diaconate and possible discernment methods. Finally, there will be time for you to ask any questions which are on your mind in order to help you to better understand the ministry of deacons.
