CONFIRMATION All students, including those in Catholic schools, are to register in August of their junior year of high school. Call the office for registration requirements. FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST COMMUNION All children, including those in Catholic schools, should be registered at the beginning of their second grade year in order to participate in the sacramental preparation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First through tenth -graders meet on Tuesday evenings, October-April. Vacation Bible School, for children ages 4-10, is held for one week each summer. Confirmation students must complete 24 hours of high school religious education prior to their junior year. Adults wishing to learn more about their Catholic faith, including those wishing to become members of the Catholic Church, should call the office to speak with Gerrie Baumbouree. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The church can be reserved as much as 18 months before a wedding. In most cases, diocesan policy requires an appointment six months prior to the wedding date. Couples are required to attend a diocesan marriage preparation course. Please view wedding guidelines on the parish web site, under Our Parish. The day will begin at 9:00AM and end at 2:00PM. The cost for the day is $25.00, which includes your lunch and materials for the day. Pre-registration is required no later than April 21. Divine Mercy Sunday The Central Deanery will once again host a special 3PM Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church this Sunday, April 23 rd, Divine Mercy Sunday. Exposition of the Holy Eucharist and the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation will take place at 2PM. The Divine Mercy Chaplet will be sung at 2:15PM with Benediction and Mass following at 3PM. Knights of Columbus Sausage PoBoy Fundraiser St. Leo Seton Knights of Columbus will be selling tickets to their Annual Sausage PoBoy Sale every weekend after each Mass here at St. Elizabeth Seton. The PoBoys will be available for pick-up at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 506 E. Gloria Switch Road on Sunday, May 7 th, from 10:30AM - 12:30PM. Please support this fundraiser. Food for the Journey a monthly lunchtime speaker series designed to help Catholics live out their faith in our daily lives. Our speaker for May is Rev. Michael Champagne, Community of Jesus Crucified. Food for the Journey will be held on Tuesday, May 2, at River Oaks Catering and Event Center, 520 East Kaliste Saloom Road, beginning at 12:00NOON. 4 PASTOR S CORNER April J U L Holy Week 2017 was a truly wonderful and uplifting few days. I can say with great faith and gratitude that the best week of the year is the week of the Sacred Triduum. I thank all of you for your participation in the Holy Week ceremonies, especially the large number of you who celebrated the glorious feast of Easter, the greatest of all feasts. I am grateful to all the Ministers of the Eucharist, the Lectors, the Altar Servers, the Choir and the Musicians, the Deacons, the Sacristans, the Ministers of Hospitality, the Décor Committee for preparing the Church for the different services of Holy Week, the Church Staff and all who helped in any way. Holy Week is indeed a parish celebration. One of the moving rituals of Holy Week is the Washing of the Feet of twelve parishioners as Jesus washed the feet of his Apostles (John 13:1-17). This awesome gesture of humility by the Lord and Savior is not only to be admired by all of us who are his disciples and his followers but a guide and a way of life for our actions and our life attitude. For me as a believer and as a Priest, it is humbling to do the ritual of the foot washing. My special thanks to the twelve parishioners who were involved on Holy Thursday as we re-enacted the action of Jesus: Melanie Heintz, Joseph Heintz, Elizabeth Heintz, Michael Heintz, Andrew Heintz, Lisa Miller, Pat Miller, Charlotte Bordelon, Hannah Canter, Noah Romero, Britni Bodoin and Teresa Quebedeaux. May the example of Jesus in humble and self-less service be a guide, a model and an inspiration for us. Liturgically, the Easter Vigil is the highlight of the Sacred Triduum, the remembrance of the Resurrection of Jesus from the tomb after his death and burial on Good Friday. The Vigil on Holy Saturday evening is touching and profound. The lighting of the Paschal Candle as the symbol of Jesus rising from the dead as the Light of the world coming into the darkness of the Church is indeed significant and enlightening. The singing of the Gloria and the ringing of the bells properly celebrates our faith in the victory of Jesus Christ over death, sin, evil and all the forces of darkness. In the early days of the Church, it was at the Easter Vigil that adults were baptized and others were received into the Church. At our Easter Vigil, we were blessed here at St. Elizabeth Seton through the diligent and devoted ministry of our RCIA group over the past months. Clay Sewell was baptized, made his First Communion; Teresa Quebedeaux and Charles Young were received into the Church and made their First Communion; Clay, Teresa, Charles and Britni Bodoin, Randy Ahrabi, Al Landry and Bodie Stelly were all confirmed. For the RCIA catechumens and for the RCIA team, the Vigil was moving, emotional and life changing. My personal congratulations and appreciation to all who have been involved in the RCIA over the past months. May God bless them with a deeper love for the Lord Jesus, a stronger faith in the Church and a greater willingness to live fully their fellowship in the community of the Body of Christ here at St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish. This weekend (April 22-23) is Divine Mercy Sunday and focuses us on the Gospel when Jesus appeared to his Apostles on Easter and gave them the power to forgive sins: The Lord Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. (John 20:20-23) At the heart of our faith in Jesus is the assurance that the merciful, gentle and humble High Priest was sent by the heavenly Father to forgive, to reconcile and to heal us of our sins, our shame, our evil and our guilt. With appropriate contrition, may we always approach the throne of grace and receive from the Savior forgiveness, mercy and understanding. On Tuesday, April 25, Bishop Douglas Deshotel, our Bishop, will be with us here at St. Elizabeth Seton for the Sacrament of Confirmation at 6:30PM. We graciously and gladly welcome the Bishop to our family of faith as he confirms our 44 young people in the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Lift up in prayer our Confirmation Candidates, their families, their sponsors and their teachers that the Holy Spirit will fill their hearts and inflame their lives with love, generosity, courage and right judgment. My prayers, best wishes, gratitude and love to you and to your loved ones for who you are, for all you do for the Lord and for the good of St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish. 7 A SEASON OF JOY They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to prayers (Acts 2:42). This first line of today s first reading sets the tone as this fifty-day celebration of Easter opens before us. Today we listen to the teachings of three apostles - Luke, Peter, and John - who remind us that even though we have not seen Christ, we nonetheless are filled with joy as we place our belief in his saving death and resurrection. Each week during the Easter season we will gather as a community of faith to find strength and support from our God and from one another. Each week we will gather to break bread and offer the great prayer of thanksgiving, actions that will manifest the very presence of the risen Christ in our midst. Let us be open to the wonders of this season of joy. Homework for the week of April 23 - April 29 1 Peter 5:5-7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The origins of the custom of burning a lamp before the tabernacle are in Jewish worship, where a lamp called ner tamid or eternal flame burns before the ark in every synagogue. The ark contains the sacred scrolls of the Torah. The flame represents the menorah in the Temple, and therefore is never extinguished. In fact, the word tabernacle itself is derived from Hebrew, as taber is the Hebrew word for tent, and hearkens back to the forty years of wandering in the desert. The pilgrim people were sustained in hope by an awareness that God was not only in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, but had quite literally pitched his tent with them in the shelter for the Ark of the Covenant. Some artisans have used this theme of ark or tent to design a tabernacle for the Blessed Sacrament. In Christian practice, Anglicans and Catholics use a sanctuary lamp to point toward the presence of the reserved sacrament, and Lutherans use it as a sign of God s presence in the house of worship, but not necessarily as a clue that the Eucharist is reserved. Why, even in an age of electric light, is the sanctuary lamp an oil light or candle? Perhaps not only to point to Christ, the light of the world, but also to point to sacrifice. For the light to exist, there must be sacrifice. The oil or wax is transformed into light, just as those who pray here, or who will receive viaticum from here, are called to transformation in Christ. - Rev. James Field, J.S. Paluch Co.
