CONFIRMATION All students, including those in Catholic schools, are to register in August of their junior year of high school. Call the office for registration requirements. FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST COMMUNION All children, including those in Catholic schools, should be registered at the beginning of their second grade year in order to participate in the sacramental preparation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First through tenth -graders meet on Tuesday evenings, October-April. Vacation Bible School, for children ages 4-10, is held for one week each summer. Confirmation students must complete 24 hours of high school religious education prior to their junior year. Adults wishing to learn more about their Catholic faith, including those wishing to become members of the Catholic Church, should call the office to speak with Gerrie Baumbouree. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The church can be reserved as much as 18 months before a wedding. In most cases, diocesan policy requires an appointment six months prior to the wedding date. Couples are required to attend a diocesan marriage preparation course. Please view wedding guidelines on the parish web site, under Our Parish. 4 PASTOR S CORNER April This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. (Psalm 118:24) J U L For us who have a personal faith in Jesus Christ, the season of Lent has great meaning in the life of Jesus but also in the life of the Jewish people and their forty years of wandering in the desert. As we conclude the liturgical season of Lent with the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of the Triduum and the greatest feast of all, the Easter Event, I offer a word of appreciation to all who have helped make this Lent so spiritually significant. I acknowledge the many of you who made such efforts to come to daily Mass and to the many who were ministers at the Masses: those who served, who were Lectors, who were Ministers of the Eucharist and who were sacristans. The celebration of the Lord s Supper at daily Mass and at Sunday Mass enables us as a community of faith here at St. Elizabeth Seton Church to share together the awesome gift of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. To share as a community of believers in the Lord s divine presence in the bread of Communion and in the Word of the Holy Scriptures is such an honor, a privilege and among the greatest blessings of the practice of our Catholic Faith. Your participation at the Masses of Lent was a source of encouragement, faith, hope and community. I also thank all who were involved in the Holy Week Services, especially those who were the Twelve Apostles at the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday and the adults who were received into the Church at the Easter Vigil as part of the RCIA Program. As your pastor and as a fellow disciple of the Lord Jesus, I am very grateful and I appreciate all of you and your personal participation in the entire Lenten season and Holy Week. Lent usually begins with great promise. I pray that your season of Lent was spiritually renewing for you as you followed through with your chosen penances, devotions and sacrifices. The Stations of the Cross prayed on Wednesday morning at 10AM and after the 5:30PM Mass were so touching for all who shared in remembering the passion and the sufferings of Jesus Christ and how his Cross is part of our journey of faith. The Way of the Cross booklet we use, Everyone s Way of the Cross, by Clarence Enzler is one of the most effective to help us see how the cross is real and part of our lives. The annual food drive at the Feast of St. Joseph was so successful as was the Morning of Recollection on the morning of Saturday, March 18, sponsored by the Stewardship Committee. I applaud the wonderful efforts of the Committee for all they do to promote Stewardship as a Way of Life. Our parish Lenten Mission this year was exceptional. Father Ron Hoye, a Vincentian Priest of the order of St. Vincent de Paul, preached our Mission over the weekend of March and on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, March He was an excellent preacher and an effective presenter. Father Ron is an extraordinary speaker, very humorous, easy to listen to, very enjoyable and motivational. We thank Father Ron for sharing his gifts, his faith and his love of the Lord with us. May the Lord continue to bless, inspire and sustain him in his preaching ministry. For us who have faith in Christ, the reality of the Easter Event frees us from all the fear and the anxiety that is ours because of our humanity and mortality. Human death is not the final chapter of our lives but an opening into the fullness of life when we enter eternity in the presence of the Lord Jesus. St. Francis of Assisi gives us the hope of Easter in the last words of his Prayer: it is in dying that we are born into eternal life. My best wishes, love, prayers and gratitude to you and to your loved ones, for who you are, for all you do for the Lord and for all you do for the good of St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish. May the hope, the joy, the life, the peace and the power of the Easter Event fill our hearts and nurture all our relationships of family, friends and community. Please support this fundraiser Annual Mothers Day of Reflection The Annual Mothers Day of Reflection will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Immaculata Center (1408 Carmel Drive, Lafayette 70501). The day will begin at 9:00AM and end at 2:00PM. The cost for the day is $25.00, which includes your lunch and materials for the day. Pre-registration is required no later than April 21. 7 REJOICE AND BE GLAD This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118:24). Let us remember that these words of today s responsorial psalm are not only sung from the hearts of those gathered in our parish. They are also sung by the poor in tiny barrios throughout Central and South America. They are sung by those denied religious freedom in our world; these Christians lift their voices in clandestine places of worship. These words are sung by people who have lost loved ones to acts of terrorism and war around the globe. Even in the midst of conflict and division, Christians still come together to declare that poverty, loneliness, violence, and division will never, ever have as much power as the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Indeed, let us rejoice this day and be glad! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Easter is nearly three weeks later this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was complete, on the Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. the ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday. The traditional rule is that Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25. The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mindbending exceptions and charts with golden numbers, dominical letters, and epacts measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. In principle, the Catholic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council. -Rev. James Field, J.S. Paluch Co.
