6 PRAYER FOR HURRICANE PROTECTION O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O Loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. 0 Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Reading Rejoice and Be Glad Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your lives. These words are used at Mass to send us back out into the world, to glorify the Lord. But how do we do that? How can our little lives add anything to the splendor and majesty of God? Join us on five consecutive Tuesdays to explore Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today s World. In five chapters, the Holy Father explores ways in which the Lord calls us all to holiness, each in his or her own way. Sessions will begin at 6PM, and last about an hour. Each session will focus on one of the five chapters of the document. No registration is required. Presenter: Fr. M. Keith LaBove, Pastor Where: St. Patrick Catholic Church 406 E. Pinhook Road, Lafayette, LA When: Tuesday: November 27 Starting at: 6PM ORIGINALITY HOMEBOUND If you are a parishioner who is homebound or know a parishioner who is homebound and unable to attend Mass, Diane Triche, our Minister to the Sick and Homebound, would like to bring Communion to you or another parishioner on a weekly basis while you are unable to come to church. Amen.

7 CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It s easy to understand today s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he has made us into a kingdom (Revelation 1:6) - one people united in love and peace for all eternity. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an unconscious claim on their hearts. We ve already seen how on Saint Martin s Day, November 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of Saint Martin s Wine, the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin s Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradfird sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. If the Pilgrims had known of the Martinmas connection, they might never have celebrated at all! - Rev. James Field, J.S. Paluch Co. UPCOMING EVENTS * Tuesday, November 27 - That Man is You held at 5:30AM in the Family Center. * Tuesday, November 27 - Religious Ed. PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS All are encouraged to pray for the priests who work in the Diocese of Lafayette each day. Every day there is a specific intention for one of our priests for special consideration; the specific intentions this week are: * Monday, Nov 26 th - Rev. Thomas James, SVD * Tuesday, Nov 27 th - Rev. Johnathan Janise * Wednesday, Nov 28 th - Rev. Rifunus Jas, SVD * Thursday, Nov 29 th - Rev. Stanley Jawa, SVD * Friday, Nov 30 th - Rev. Raymond Jones, SVD * Saturday, Dec 1 st - Pope Francis * Sunday, Dec 2 nd - Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Prayer: Eternal Father, we lift up to you these and all the priests of the world. Sanctify them. Heal and guide them. Mold them into the likeness of your Son Jesus, the Eternal High Priest. May their lives be pleasing to you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
