CONFIRMATION All students, including those in Catholic schools, are to register in August of their junior year of high school. Call the office for registration requirements. FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST COMMUNION All children, including those in Catholic schools, should be registered at the beginning of their second grade year in order to participate in the sacramental preparation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First through tenth -graders meet on Tuesday evenings, October-April. Vacation Bible School, for children ages 4-10, is held for one week each summer. Confirmation students must complete 24 hours of high school religious education prior to their junior year. Adults wishing to learn more about their Catholic faith, including those wishing to become members of the Catholic Church, should call the office to speak with Gerrie Baumbouree. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The church can be reserved as much as 18 months before a wedding. In most cases, diocesan policy requires an appointment six months prior to the wedding date. Couples are required to attend a diocesan marriage preparation course. Please view wedding guidelines on the parish web site, under Our Parish. 4 PASTOR S CORNER December 24-25, 2016 J U L A Merry and Joyous Christmas to you, to your family and to your loved ones! For me the best day of the week to celebrate the Birth of the Messiah is Sunday, the Lord s Day. The days of Advent with its beautiful readings, especially from the prophet Isaiah, prepared us to be well disposed to celebrate and recognize the coming of the long awaited Savior of the Jewish people. The Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is the Emmanuel (God is with us), the Christ Child is the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings come to us so humbly, so simply and so wonderfully in the manger at Bethlehem. On this Christmas day, in my name, in the names of our Deacons: Nelson Schexnayder, Michael Morrison and Ron Chauvin, and in the name of the Staff of St. Elizabeth Seton Church, we offer to all of you our fellow Parishioners our prayers and our best wishes at this holy season of the year. May each one of us take time to properly celebrate the Christmas event in a personal, spiritual and religious manner as we renew our faith in the Lord Jesus, the one sent by the Father to save us from our sins and to reconcile us to the Father and to give us true and lasting peace. The mystery of the Incarnation, God becoming truly human in the person of the Christ Child, calls us to open our hearts and our inner spirits to the providence of God. The blessings and the graces in the Messiah fulfill our greatest needs and sustain us in our deepest longings. Take time to remember, take time to pray and to worship the Child born of Mary on this Christmas Day. Of the gifts and blessings that I am most grateful for, next to my personal faith in God and in the person of Jesus Christ, the Messiah and the Prince of Peace, are my family and my friends. At this special time of the entire year, may we value, appreciate and acknowledge the relationships of our lives. Being with loved ones makes the feast of Christmas so meaningful and so enjoyable. May each one of us renew and refresh our commitment to the relationships of our lives by doing our best to care for one another with the grace, the kindness, the mercy and the understanding that comes from the love of the Lord for us that we know in the person of Jesus Christ. As the Father loves us so devotedly and so faithfully in Christ, may we strive to love one another. The coming of the Lord Jesus in our midst to save and to redeem us is a vocation and a way of life given us by the words, the actions and the mission of the Messiah. St. Paul s words to Titus that are the second reading for the Midnight Mass for Christmas eloquently teach us the challenge of the Birth of Christ. Beloved, the grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. (Titus 2:11-14) May our proper celebration of the Christmas Event bless all the relationships of our lives and also make a real difference in the way we follow the Lord Jesus our Savior in all the actions, in the ways we live our daily lives. A word of gratitude to all of you who have been so faithful and so considerate during the Advent season by your prayers, your kindness, your generosity and your goodness. As your Pastor, I thank you for your lived faith, for your commitment to our Church Parish, for your willingness to share of your gifts and resources with others, and your diligence in living your relationship with the Lord Jesus. One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. Each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you d walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me. The Lord replied, My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. 7 THE GIFT OF GOD S WORD On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect o the great gift of God s Word. Because it is creative, God s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return.it dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An old joke asks, What time is Midnight Mass? The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of midnight predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as The Shepherds Mass, and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus birth to focus on the key to the day s celebration: John the Evangelist s majestic theology of Christ s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separatemasses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season.
