1 From the Pastor Proper Behavior at Mass HOLY MASS We should try never to be late for Mass. In fact, we should try to show up at least a few minutes early. This allows us to put ourselves in the state of mind and heart which will allow us fully to be present at the Holy Sacrifice. Getting to Mass early just allows us to pray and prepare ourselves better. If for some reason we can t be on time, we try to sit in the back so we don t disturb others. There are certain rare occasions for all of us that make us late for Mass, but if we are always late, we should ask ourselves whether we have the proper respect for what is the greatest event of our week: God coming to be present among us in the Sacrament of the Altar. Saint of the Week 18 August Saint Alypius St. Augustine struggled to give up his concubine before entering the Church. His dear friend Alypius had a different sort of addiction. In his youth, Alypius went often to his father s arena and had gotten hooked on the spectacle of savage beasts tearing each other apart. Later, Alypius heard Augustine railing against the madness of the circus. He took it to heart and he thought himself cured. When some friends playfully dragged him to the arena, Alypius bravely resisted. He kept his eyes shut, until one bloodcurdling cry excited his curiosity. He opened his eyes, and the lust for violence again took hold of him. The final cure came for Alypius on the very day that Augustine received the grace of chastity. Augustine had opened Paul s letter to the Romans and showed his friend. Alypius read the first verse of chapter 14, Welcome anyone who is weak in faith, and immediately applied these words to himself. Henceforth he lived in absolute trust, so assured and in control of himself that he would walk on frozen Italian soil with bare feet. as Augustine tells us. Both men were received into the Church in Milan by Saint Ambrose. Later, both became revered bishops in North Africa, Augustine at Hippo, Alypius at Tagaste. Alypius died in 430. He is patron saint of those who suffer from addiction. Saint Alypius, pray for us! Go to FORMED.ORG. The Food Pantry at Good Shepherd Parish is available to anyone in need. We are also accepting donations. Contact the Parish office Our parish code is DZX8HP.

2 From the Pastor Cont. Respect Life Ministry The Assumption of Mary is a great mystery which regards each one of us, it regards our future. Mary, in fact, precedes us on the path walked upon by those who, through their Baptism, have bound their life to Jesus, as Mary bound her own life to Him. Today s feast makes us look to heaven, foretells the new heaven and new earth., with the Risen Christ s victory over death and the definitive defeat of evil. Therefore, the exultation of the humble maiden of Galilee, expressed in the Canticle of the Magnificat, becomes the song of all humanity, which sees with satisfaction the Lord stoop over all men and all women, humble creatures, and assume them with him into heaven This hymn of Mary also leads us to think of the many current painful situations, in particular of women overwhelmed by the burden of life and by the tragedy of violence, of women enslaved by the oppression of the powerful, of children forced into inhuman labour, of women obliged to suurender in body and in spirit to the greed of men. May they begin as soon as possible a life of peace, of justice, of love, awaiting the day in which they will finally feel they are held by hands which do not humiliate them, but which lift them tenderly and lead them of the path of life, to heaven. ~Pope Francis, Angelus, Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 2016 Respect Life Prayer Intention: For all who are abused, exploited, and enslaved; may God grant them divine protection and may we, through the intercession of Mary, work to end all oppression of our brothers and sisters. 10am Masses Ad Orientem 2017 Like it? 6 Come and experience the beauty of singing Evening Prayer with the Universal Church! OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA EVENING PRAYER AUGUST 20, :00PM Exposition of Blessed Sacrament - Adoration 3:30-4:00PM Music and Hymns to Our Lady 4:00PM Opening of Evening Prayer Vespers (Evening Prayer) Vespers, also called Evening Prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office. In the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church fulfills Jesus' command to "pray always" (Luke 18:1; see also 1 Thessalonians 5:17). Through this prayer, the people of God sanctify the day by continual praise of God and prayers of intercession for the needs of the world. The Liturgy of the Hours includes several specified times of prayer. The most important times, called the "hinge hours," are Morning Prayer (which takes place upon rising) and Evening Prayer (which takes place as dusk begins to fall). The other hours are the Office of Readings (a service with a biblical reading and a reading from the Fathers or Church writers or a reading related to a saint which may take place at any time of day), a Daytime Prayer (which may take place at Midmorning, Midday, or Midafternoon), and Night Prayer (said before going to sleep). Bishops, priests, deacons, and many men and women in consecrated life pray the Liturgy of the Hours each day. Their work is organized around this prayer, keeping God always at the center of their days. Lay people are encouraged to pray the Liturgy of the Hours as well, especially Morning and Evening Prayer. Many parishes in the United States schedule communal Morning and Evening Prayer on a regular basis. Evening Prayer gives thanks for the day just past and makes an evening sacrifice of praise to God (see Psalm 141:1).
