CONFIRMATION All students, including those in Catholic schools, are to register in August of their junior year of high school. Call the office for registration requirements. FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST COMMUNION All children, including those in Catholic schools, should be registered at the beginning of their second grade year in order to participate in the sacramental preparation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First through tenth -graders meet on Tuesday evenings, October-April. Vacation Bible School, for children ages 4-10, is held for one week each summer. Confirmation students must complete 24 hours of high school religious education prior to their junior year. Adults wishing to learn more about their Catholic faith, including those wishing to become members of the Catholic Church, should call the office to speak with Gerrie Baumbouree. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The church can be reserved only after meeting with the priest to begin marriage preparation for the couple. It is recommended that an appointment be made at least one (1) year in advance of the anticipated date of the wedding. Marriage preparation requirements, policies and guidelines are reviewed and must be completed prior to any marriage in the church. 4 PASTOR S CORNER March 31 - April 1, 2018 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, As we end our Lenten journey I wanted to share with you some of the teachings of our faith regarding what Easter means to Christians to Catholics. J U L The Fulfillment of Our Faith - Easter is a day of celebration because it represents the fulfillment of our faith as Christians. St. Paul wrote that, unless Christ rose from the dead, our faith is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:17). Through his death, Christ saved mankind from bondage to sin, and He destroyed the hold that death has on all of us; but it is His Resurrection that gives us the promise of new life, both in this world and the next. The Coming of the Kingdom - That new life began on Easter Sunday. In the Our Father, we pray that Thy Kingdom come, on earth as it is in Heaven. And Christ told His disciples that some of them would not die until they saw the Kingdom of God coming in power (Mark 9:1). The early Christian Fathers saw Easter as the fulfillment of that promise. With the resurrection of Christ, God s Kingdom is established on earth, in the form of the Church. New Life in Christ - That is why people who are converting to Catholicism traditionally are baptized at the Easter Vigil service, which takes place on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter), starting sometime after sunset. They have usually undergone a long process of study and preparation known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Their baptism parallels Christ s own Death and Resurrection, as they die to sin and rise to new life in the Kingdom of God. Because of the central importance of Easter to the Christian faith, the Catholic Church requires that all Catholics who have made their First Communion receive the Holy Eucharist sometime during the Easter season, which lasts through Pentecost, 50 days after Easter. (The Church also urges us to take part in the Sacrament of Confession before receiving this Easter communion.) This reception of the Eucharist is a visible sign of our faith and our participation in the Kingdom of God. Of course, we should receive Communion as frequently as possible; this Easter Duty is simply the minimum requirement set by the Church. (About.com/Catholicism Scott P. Richert) May we look at and approach our faith not as a duty or an obligation, but for what it truly is for us a thanksgiving to God for His great love. That because He loved us so much He sacrificed His only begotten Son that you and I may have eternal life. We should rejoice each day in this fact alone remembering what He has done for us. Faith should not be looked upon as something we must do, but rather, something that we rejoice in doing. May God continue to pour forth His blessings upon His people! Fr. David

5 Centennial News Sunday, April 1, 2018 St. Landry Church Dedicated - April 7, 1909, marks the dedication of the current St. Landry Church in Opelousas by Archbishop Blenk of New Orleans. This massive Romanesque Revival church still stands as one of the largest churches in southwest Louisiana. St. Landry Church Parish traces its establishment back to 1776 and is the second oldest parish in the Diocese of Lafayette. Over the years, many new parishes would be formed from the boundaries of St. Landry in Opelousas. In 1920, Bishop Jeanmard formed a second parish in Opelousas, Holy Ghost, in order to expand ministry to African-American Catholics in Opelousas. Jubilee Bible Marathon - In honor of the Centennial of the Diocese of Lafayette , the Holy Bible will be read from cover to cover in the Square of St. Martinville beginning Wednesday, April 4 th at 12:30PM to Sunday, April 8 th at 4:30PM hours for 100 years!!! St. Mary Magdelen is our oldest Church Parish in the West Deanery and the 8 th oldest canonically established Church Parish in the Diocese. Our Centennial Year is well underway and all Clergy and Laity are invited to attend this Mass and reception with Bishop Deshotel. On April 13 in 1918, Jules B. Jeanmard, who was then the Administrator of the Diocese of New Orleans, was sub delegated by the Apostolic Delegate to carry out and begin the actual work of forming the Diocese of Lafayette. Thus we continue to celebrate our history and hear the call of God for today and tomorrow in our Diocese. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. The Central Deanery of the Diocese of Lafayette presents Food for the Journey, a monthly lunchtime speakers series designed to help Catholics live out our faith in our daily lives. Our speaker for April is Rev. David Hebert, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Lafayette. 6 March 31- April 1, 2018 > The Importance of Family Mealtimes In the lives of today s busy families, it may seem hard to make time for a family mealtime. However, the effort is well worth the return. When families eat together, it offers parents and siblings several benefits. Parents have an opportunity to listen to their children, and stay more in-tuned to what s going on in their lives. Consider playing high-low. Each person gets a chance uninterrupted - to share the high of the day and the low of the day. Then offer the highs up to God in thanksgiving. Offer the lows too, trusting that God takes our suffering and turns it into something good. The traditions of family meals have existed since Genesis. Mealtime can be a perfect opportunity for parents to share about Catholic and cultural traditions. Regular family mealtimes help establish a sense of family unity and safety. Mealtimes are rare occasions to just visit. There must be a pact that everyone may share without judgment. The family table is no place for conflict. It has been shown that regular family mealtimes can also help increase children s language development and literacy. Communication is key to success. Regular family mealtimes improve parent-child relationships and decreases the chances that teens will use drugs. Teens need to feel connected. Family connections keep adolescence from seeking unhealthy approval elsewhere. Teens who had five family dinners at least five times a week are one and a half times more likely to report that their parents know a great deal or fair amount about what s going on in their lives. Parental knowledge about their child s life and quality parent-child relationships are key factors in raising confident children who grow to be competent adults. Take it from Jesus and the Holy Family, having family mealtimes is important. Enjoy cooking, visiting, and praying together on a regular basis so that your family stays faithful and healthy. 7 PROCLAIM THE RISEN CHRIST On Easter morning everything - the spring weather, the flowers, birds and butterflies, the people around us in their finery, the beautiful liturgy and music - everything seems to bear witness that Jesus Christ is risen today! Like the eyewitness accounts in today s scriptures, the glorious and joyful life all around us helps us to believe the good news of the Resurrection and sing Alleluia! In the scriptures today we hear from Peter and Paul and John. All three speak with conviction about witnessing the resurrected Christ. John s Gospel account includes Mary of Magdala, who also was privileged to witness the Resurrection and tell others the good news. On this glorious Easter Sunday can we ourselves give eyewitness accounts that Jesus Christ is risen today, alive and active in our lives? The mystery is that even death gives way to life for those who are held in the embrace of Jesus. Today, many new Christians arise from the waters of the font. Yet the font is not the destination of their journey. The goal is Pentecost, fifty days from now, and a lifetime of praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Holy Spirit, for the sake of the world. Neophyte, our ancient word for newly-baptized people, means newly-planted in Greek. If someone in your parish has just been baptized, welcome them today.
