CONFIRMATION All students, including those in Catholic schools, are to register in August of their junior year of high school. Call the office for registration requirements. FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST COMMUNION All children, including those in Catholic schools, should be registered at the beginning of their second grade year in order to participate in the sacramental preparation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First through tenth -graders meet on Tuesday evenings, October-April. Vacation Bible School, for children ages 4-10, is held for one week each summer. Confirmation students must complete 24 hours of high school religious education prior to their junior year. Adults wishing to learn more about their Catholic faith, including those wishing to become members of the Catholic Church, should call the office to speak with Gerrie Baumbouree. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The church can be reserved only after meeting with the priest to begin marriage preparation for the couple. It is recommended that an appointment be made at least one (1) year in advance of the anticipated date of the wedding. Marriage preparation requirements, policies and guidelines are reviewed and must be completed prior to any marriage in the church. 2 S E S ANNULMENT PROCESS WORKSHOP July 24, 2018, the Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Lafayette, Msgr. Robie Robichaux, will be presenting workshops on Declaration of Nullity and what is needed to begin the process. 4 PASTOR S CORNER June 23-24, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, As we continue to explore How God Distributes His Gifts we delve into a deeper look at each of the sacraments. We are reminded that Jesus promises that he would not leave us orphans but would send the Holy Spirit to guide and protect us. He gave the sacraments to heal, feed, and strengthen us. J U L We first looked at the sacrament of Baptism. Today we will look at the sacrament of Penance (also known as the Confession or Reconciliation). For those who are interested in learning more about the Sacrament of Baptism you can turn to the Catechism of the Catholic Church numbers Because of original sin, we are born without grace in our souls, so there is no way for us to have fellowship with God. Jesus became man to bring us into union with his Father. He said no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is first born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5-6) this refers to baptism. In John 3:5-6 we read, Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Through baptism we are born again, but this time on a spiritual level instead of a physical level. We are washed in the bath of rebirth. In Titus 3:3-7 we read, For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by men and hating one another; but when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. We are baptized into Christ s death and therefore share in his resurrection. In Romans 6:3-8 we read, Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our former man was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For he who has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. Baptism cleanses us of sins and brings the Holy Spirit and his grace into our souls. In Acts 2:38 and 22:16 we read, And Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name. And the apostle Peter is perhaps the most blunt of all in 1 Peter 3:21-22 which reads, Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him. 5 FETE-DIEU DU VERMILION Come and Celebrate the Centennial of the Diocese of Lafayette! Fete-Dieu du Vermilion, Eucharistic Boat Procession up the Vermilion River, will take place on the Feast of the Assumption, Wednesday, August 15. All are invited to a Mass in French at 8AM at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Abbeville to begin the day. Bishop Glen Provost of the Lake Charles Diocese will preside and give the homily. At the end of Mass there will be a procession from Church with the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of Mary across the draw bridge to the old River Side Restaurant. At 10:00AM, 121 boats will embark in procession (one for each of the 121 parishes of the Diocese) and make their way up Bayou Vermilion to Lafayette. The boat procession will stop in Milton at Wawee s at 11:35AM for recitation of the rosary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The flotilla will re-commence at 12:35PM and continue upstream, arriving at Rufino s in River Ranch at 1:40PM for Rosary and Benediction. The boat procession will embark once again at 2:40PM and arrive at Beaver Park at about 3:20 PM. At 3:45PM a foot procession with the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will leave the landing and process up University Avenue in Lafayette all the way to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Solemn Vespers will be prayed at 5:00PM and Holy Mass will follow at 5:30PM with Bishop Douglas Deshotel to conclude the historic day. Peter and Paul, the newly constructed church of St. Peter in New Iberia was consecrated by Bishop Jules Jeanmard. The church was the vision of their new pastor, Fr. Albert Bacque. After over a decade of fundraising, the parishioners of St. Peter raised approximately half a million dollars and the construction of the new church began in Two years later, the massive structure was completed with seating for 1,200 parishioners. Two 90-foot tall towers, decorated with large white rosaries, mark the prominence of the Church dedicated to the Prince of the Apostles. National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministries in this Centennial Year, the Diocese of Lafayette is happy to host a national Marriage and Family Conference July at the Cajundome Convention Center. 6 PRAYER FOR HURRICANE PROTECTION O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O Loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. 0 Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. 7 JOHN THE BAPTIST UPCOMING EVENTS Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility - I am not he - was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. * Sunday, July 1 - NO Children Church, July This is Vacation time for the Teachers and a chance to recruit more teachers. * Wednesday, July 4 - Parish Offices closed in observance of the Fourth of July. PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three nativity feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today s birth of the Baptist. Today s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child s advent, but of Elizabeth s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting St. John s fires in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It s a tradition! - Rev. James Field, J.S. Paluch Co.
