1 ALIVE & LINKED THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF AUSTRALIA DIOCESE OF GIPPSLAND The Parish Paper of MOE-NEWBOROUGH St Luke s Moe St Aidan s Newborough St James Yallourn North Parish Prayer God of Eternity, Who makes all things new by your life within us: Circle us with your love, Fill us with your spirit, strengthen us with your power that we may be bearers of your word. Inspire others to walk in your steps and bring new life to all people for evermore. Amen On Saturday August 18th twelve members of our parish were privileged to witness the installation of the Right Reverend Richard Stanley Treloar as the thirteenth Bishop of Gippsland. I say privileged because it was an inspiring service to mark an important moment in the life journey of the Diocese. Bishop Treloar was welcomed at the door of the Cathedral by the Captains of St. Pauls Grammar School and Gippsland Grammar School, the Reverends Kathy Dalton and Phyllis Andy who acknowledged the traditional owners and gave a welcome to country, the Primate, the Dean and the Administrator. Installation of the Right Reverend Richard Treloar As the Bishop was led to his seat in the cathedral the choir of Gippsland Grammar sang Amen Siakudmisa (Amen, sing praises to the Lord). Then followed the formal presentation and installation. The Eucharist then proceeded with the Bishop celebrating and Preaching. As the readings were based on the celebration of the Feast of Mary Mother of our Lord the Bishop preached on Mary s faith and example of carrying out the ministry that God had called her to. During communion the choirs of Gippsland Grammar and Christ Church South Yarra with friends sang anthems A Prayer of St Richard of Chichester which was written by Michael Leighton Jones (the director of music at Christ Church South Yarra) and conducted by him and Borogoditse Devo by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Other music during the service included the hymns let us build a house where love can dwell, Tell out my soul, the greatness of the Lord, Alleluia, sing to Jesus!, and Go in grace and make disciples. The congregation consisted of Laity and Clergy from the Diocese and from the Diocese of Melbourne, parishioners from Christ Church South Yarra, most of the Bishops of the Province of Victoria, and family and friends of the Treloars. Our parish representatives all remarked on the exceptional job done by the Diocesan and Cathedral team in hosting the installation. It is never easy when you have over 400 people attending a function in a building that caters for 200 but they coped well seating the overflow in the hall where a live broadcast of the service was televised enabling those of us there to participate fully in the service. Numerous stations for the reception of communion were set up to enable this to happen with meaning but in good time. Those in the hall were very pleased to share in the Greeting of Peace with Bishop Richard who came amongst us. Following the service lunch was served in a marquee which was erected in the Cathedral Grounds. Graeme N Bishop Richard Treloar to visit Moe-Newborough Parish September 2018 The Right Reverend Richard Stanley Treloar, our Bishop of Gippsland will be visiting us for the first time on Sunday September 16th for the 10.00am Eucharist service at St Aidan s Church. Following the service there will be a bring and share luncheon. As a result of the Bishop s visit there will be no service at Yallourn North. Because there is a fifth Sunday in September we will be celebrating a Parish Eucharist on Sunday 30th, 10am at St Lukes. NOTE: There is no evening service on either of these days.

2 I submitted this design for our parish paper header to Parish Council last month as I believe with the coming together of our three churches that it is time to progress onwards to effectively rename the Alive and Linked. This is a suggestion only and I would appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to submit your suggestions or ideas as everyone is welcome to contribute. Alice W Many Happy Returns to: Mitchell Purcell 2/9, Kathryn Bartlett 13/9 & Glenis Schultz 20/9 Many Happy Returns from all of your parish friends X X Belated Birthday wishes to Bruce King who celebrated his special day on 30th August. St. Lukes Hall Commencing at 5.30pm Soup and finger Food to be served followed by the screening of the film Where Hope Grows - an inspiring story finding redemption through friendship, hope and love. Calvin Campbell, a former professional baseball player struggling with his own life curve balls meets Produce, a young man with Down Syndrome who works at the local grocery store. As their friendship develops Calvin is reminded that sometimes hope can grow in the most unlikely of places. Cost $15 Tea and Coffee to follow October 6th-St James-Yallourn North. Sponsored by the Parish Guild Yallourn North are conducting a township Garage Sale. Susan Lendon is coordinating this event for St James. As we are now the one parish we are requesting that all hands on deck help to assist. Susan is indicating that stall positions will be available for sale on the parish grounds. Susan will require people to come up early and set up marquee. Peter (her husband) is going to assist but will require more hands. Susan has asked Yallourn North Op Shop to look out for special items to sell, would be thankful for same from Newborough and Moe and anywhere. All items pre-priced would be preferred. With help, we can set up very early on the morning of the event and after the third week service in Sept we will be able to store items in the St James foyer. In the meantime she will chase up the entry on the town map. We also have to sort a big sign for out the front. It is possible to serve a cuppa from the vestry side entrance. After the event assistance will be required to return unsold items to op shops. Pray for good weather. Thank you in advance. Contact: Susan Lendon Antiques and Collectables Fair SATURDAY OCTOBER 13TH Only six weeks to go to this major Parish Fundraising Activity. We can sell goods for you on commission also encourage others to book a stall for themselves.

3 AMUA: On August 9 th AMUA members travelled to Leongatha to share in the Diocesan celebration of our founder, Mary Sumner. Archdeacon Graham Knott (Preacher), and Archdeacon Edie Ashley (Speaker) both shared their thoughts as to what the importance of MU meant to them. With our theme this year being Walking in Mary Sumner s Footsteps, Archdeacon Edie recapped on Mary Sumner s journey; her availability and prayerfulness as she developed relationships with those around her, spurred into action when her eldest daughter gave birth to her first baby. Mary remembered her feelings of inadequacy as a young mother charged with the terrible responsibility for a new life. She believed that women from every class needed to understand that motherhood was a profession and be equipped to perform it. Archdeacon Edie reminded us of how Mothers Union range and depth of work far exceeds Mary Sumner s original vision of a circle of prayer upholding family life, speaking on the work of Mothers Union in our Diocese and particularly conveying to members how much the St Barnabas Family Break was appreciated and what it meant to those who have participated. (Photo: Archdeacon Edie) From Father Sathi The Bishop s Visit. Our new Bishop Rt Revd. Richard Treloar will be visiting Moe-Newborough on 16 th September for a 10.00am service at Newborough. This venue is chosen mainly for its many conveniences such as seating, parking and disabled access, kitchen and fellowship space. Jackson Purcell hopes to receive his first communion on that day! My memories of when the bishop came, goes back to my confirmation when I was 12yo, dressed in white and one of the 15 or 20 candidates in a 250+ congregation. It would normally be a lavish parish celebration. Later, as a clergyman, I had to organize the bishop s visit, train candidates for confirmation and often travel with the bishop to the smaller congregations in the wider parish. Where a smaller group of 30+ will enthusiastically welcome the bishop, while I slide away as an incognito organiser! About 30yrs ago, the bishop of the Northern Territory Bp Clyde happened to visit my parish at Katherine (325km from Darwin). Sandra and I hosted him for dinner as he stayed overnight. Yes, it was Rice and Curry! Yes, yes, they loved it. It was a spicy learning curve for them. After dinner the bishop was missing. A short search found him doing the dishes in the kitchen. Bishop, you can t be doing this exclaimed the exasperated Sandra. Well, Sandra, you did the cooking. We do the washing was the bishop s gentle reply. This was a learning curve for us as new migrants. This Boomeranging learning curve was further accentuated when I was asked to enquire from the bishop s wife whether she wanted coffee or tea. With all the obligatory intonations that is required in addressing any dignitary in Asia, I began, Mrs Woods.. She stopped, turned around, Sathi, I am not Mrs Woods, I am Margaret. I was not used to calling any ladies older than me by their first names. Ok, M..MM Maaaargret. Gosh, I made it! At another Bishop visit, we travelled to Timber Creek (270km from Katherine), for a Christmas visit. The congregation was thrilled to have the bishop visiting them. We always met at the residence of the Caravan Park owner s - the Fogarty family. Bp Clyde asked me to choose possible hymns. Considering myself to be a good Anglican, I thought, I ll choose some good old Christmas songs. In the bleak mid-winter will be superb. Lovely tune, soft and melodious. The rough and rugged bush life will certainly appreciate a classic Christmas melody. The stern but gentle tone of an Anglican bishop pierced my ears, Sathi, this is December in the Northern Territory. This is no Winter and certainly there is no snow! Well, when a bishop in shorts and short sleeved shirt, wiping his perspirations under an Akubra hat advises you in Northern Territory December My Church of England snow just evaporated without even melting! With all your smiles, warmth and generosity, I too am looking forward to hosting our new bishop.

4 MAGDALENE CENTRE NEWBOROUGH This month has seen sales remain consistent for mid winter. The exception being last week where sales were extremely rewarding for our first week of 50c sale. Buy swap and sell sights were saturated locally and the result was reflected in the sales. A cash back claim from Fujitsu for purchase of split systems was submitted and has been approved. The $400 prepaid Visa card has since arrived. Two of our work for the dole participants have completed their time with us and we wish them well for the future. They have been replaced with two new clients who have commenced with us. One of the new Work for Dole clients has since left to look after her aging Father so we are down to one again. ANGELS TREASURES & TRINITY HOUSE Last month we farewelled Dr Robin Mitra who had been working on our team for some time both in the shop and at Trinity House. Robin has left us due to health reasons but I am sure that he will continue to keep an interest in our work and we will continue to see him. We have asked through our Pew Sheet whether there are any others who might have some time to assist at Trinity House even on an occasional basis to allow for the small team of regulars to have some time off. The nature of the work at Trinity House provides a great opportunity to meet with people and some wonderful connections and conversations have been held. We are also always looking for new members of the shop team. Through store advertising we have been fortunate enough to be offered the services of a qualified interior designer (volunteer) to dress our windows. We welcome Ann and look forward to seeing more of her work in the future. Ann s Fathers Day window has had many passers by stopping to admire her work and popping their heads in the shop to comment. Many thanks Ann from all of us at Newborough. Many people find these to be most useful resources for their own private devotion as well as for group study. All external (non Moe-Newborough parish) fundraising activities are required to be submitted to : Fr. Sathi Anthony and Wardens for due processing and approval. The 2019 Australian Anglican Church Calendar now available to order. Please let the Parish Office know if you would like to order one. Thank you. Operation Christmas Child Boxes: For some 12 years Newborough Parish sent Samaritan Purse Christmas boxes, and now as the Parish of Moe-Newborough this tradition has continued. Over the years we have sent nearly 500 boxers to children who may otherwise not know what a gift of love means. There are boxes in each centre for those who would like to make up a box or make a donation of an item for a box. Items are grouped in: things to write with, things to play with, things to wear, things for hygiene and things to love. Please see Jan or Gwyneth for further information or if you would like to contribute towards the $10 postage of each box.. AMUA members have begun this years collection, with 9 boxes packed and ready to be sent away. Members of the community also work with the parish and help in in collecting boxes from family and workmates, so a great outreach. Boxes will be sent away the last week of October. In some circumstances we can follow where our boxes eventually are distributed with last years boxes going to Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Cambodia and delighted their recipients with their wonderful contents. Last year over 1700 boxes were sent from the Gippsland are, of which we sent 41! is the official website of the Parish of Moe / Newborough. The website also allows us to post items to face book so for those who use face book look for the : moenewboroughanglicanparish. Our website contains up to date information about parish activities, worship services etc.
