2 From Father Sathi Greening yourselves How many of you have noticed that since Advent last year (Dec 17), we have gone through many Liturgical colours, clearly visible at the Altar and by the clergy vestments worn on Sundays and the weekdays. Purple/Violet for Advent and Lent, Red for Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Saints/Martyr days and White for other Festival Days. A colourful and meaningful Liturgical tradition observed across a few Christian denominations around the world. Red: The symbolism is the Holy Spirit represented by the tongues of fire at Pentecost and also the symbolism of the blood of the martyrs. White: The colour of the Holy Trinity, or our Lord and of purity and joy. It is used during Christmastide, Feast of the Epiphany, Eastertide, Ascension-tide, the Transfiguration, All Saints Day and its Octave, the feasts of saints who were not martyrs. It is also used on great festival occasions and for weddings. Violet: The Symbolism representing penitence and preparation. It is used during Advent, pre-lent and Lent. Now we welcome the colour Green until Christ the King (white) followed by the next Advent. This is the colour of nature and of growth. It is used on all occasions when another colour is not prescribed. Sit in reverie and watch the changing colour of the waves that break upon the idle seashore of the mind. is attributed to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The following scripture verses, demonstrate the manner in which the soul of some of the early writers grappled with growth. My wounds grow foul and fester because of my foolishness - Psalm 38:5; The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon - Psalm 92:12; Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted - Hebrews 12:3; Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation - 1Peter 2:2; But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen - 2Peter 3:18. Where do I/we go from here could better be complemented by where do I/we grow from here! This could not only be an appropriate question but also a necessary question in the context of our own parish s forward journey as a combined parish. A exciting way to reflect on our personal journeys too. The colourful and multifaceted world of opportunities is holding out it s arms, and inviting us to GROW. Our personal lives can testify to the many ways by which we have grown, or regret the missed opportunities that we failed to latch on to. Change may not always bring growth, but there is no growth without change. Roy T. Bennett, At our May meeting Moe-Newborough AMUA members met and following fellowship over lunch looked at the Worldwide Mothers Union Wave of Prayer and how each day 4 million members in over 80 countries are linked at midday, so that no member need ever feel isolated. We looked at our linked Dioceses in Tanzania, Nigeria, South Sudan and Ireland, where we are prayed for between 11 th -13 th May by the worldwide membership. Tanzania has a staggering membership of over 850,000 members not a misprint! The African Dioceses have very specific projects that empower women and families income generating micro industries, literacy and numeracy programs and parenting programs. We thought of their struggles, differences, similarities and the strength of some of these members in the adversities they face, sometimes each day, and admired their resilience, faith and vision. All Ireland members work is quite similar to our own diocese, with holiday programs being in the forefront, and prayer being the string that binds us all together. We wondered what Mary Sumner, our founder, would think of the work still being done in her name, some 15O years after she formed Mother s Union. We thought she would be amazed at the diversity and the ingenuity of members but perhaps not surprised that the core objects are as relevant today as they were in in her time. We look forward to sharing with members and friends from around the Diocese on Wednesday 13 th June, at St Aidan s, where Health Professionals from the Community Health Team will speak on how we can prevent injury to ourselves, through falls prevention. Please feel free to join us service at 10am and speakers from 1pm.
3 The Beer Lords Prayer Our beer Which art in barrels, Hallowed be thy drink. Thy will be drunk, (I will be drunk), At home as it is in the tavern. Give us this day our foamy head, And forgive us our spillage, As we forgive those who spill against us. And lead us not to incarceration, But deliver us from hangovers. For thine is the beer, the bitter, and the lager For ever and ever, Barmen. OUR GIVING TO MISSIONS Our Parish has made commitment to support the Missions of the church. This is done through our support of ABM (Anglican Board of Mission), CMS (Church Missionary Society), BCA (Bush Church Aid), and SPARKLIT ( a Missionary Body which supports Christian Writing). The Parish Council has committed to sending $100 / month supporting each agency in turn. This is then added to by the monies that come in through the Missionary Offering Envelopes. We also support specific Missionary Appeals such as Christmas Bowl, Lenten Appeal, Good Friday for the Churches of Jerusalem and the East etc. In addition to this the Guild has had a Missions Fund Raiser and Mothers Union supports their own Missions. The following donations have been made so far this year: ABM $ BCA $ CMS $ ABM LENT $ ABM Good Friday $ MU Northern Outreach $ MU Overseas Mission $ MU St Barnabas Appeal $ GHMF $ SPARKLIT $ A TOTAL OF $1, Thank you for your continued generous support. BRINGING OUR CAPITAL ASSETS INTO GOOD REPAIR: Parish Council has continued to support a program of ensuring that our buildings and other assets are in good repair. Last month we reported on the work being done at Saint James Yallourn North and this followed on from previous work undertaken at Saint Aidan s and the William Street House. Work has also been undertaken on restoring the Organ at Saint Luke s. The work was done by Albert Fox who expressed his appreciation at being able to work on such an instrument and his pleasure that the Parish saw fit to maintain it. A further report on the organ can be found in this edition. At its last meeting the Council agreed to the replacement of the carpet in Saint Luke s Narthex and has also requested quotes on issues regarding the electrical switchboard and lighting at Saint Luke s as well as the provision of new toilet arrangements at saint Aidan s to provide for a Disability Access Toilet. So far this year $21,613 has been spent on maintenance upgrades. The Parish Council has agreed to funds being transferred back from investment accounts to help achieve this work. PARISH GUILD The June Guild Meeting will be as part of JUNE-JOIN-IN at Saint Aidan s on Wednesday June 13. In July Guild will host Cliché Fashions and two course casserole Luncheon in the Albert Street Primary School on Monday July 2nd with the lunch commencing at 12noon. Cost $20 The July Guild meeting will be on Monday July 9th at 1.30pm at Trinity House Meeting Room.
4 MAGDALENE CENTRE NEWBOROUGH MAGDALENE CENTRE YALLOURN NORTH The Newborough shop has continued to trade well over the past 2 months. Our drive for new volunteers was marginally successful and sufficient to our needs, but as quite a number of long term helpers are heading north for winter we are once again stretching to cover shifts over this period. Unfortunately we lost our three shed sorters as Tay has attained full time employment and Sue (her mother) worked with her. Tay was also our shed supervisor, they will both be missed such good workers are hard to find. Congratulations on another of our shed sorters Louise who gave birth to her first child, a boy. Sureways have been approached to alter our contract from 2 to 4 work for the dole participants and this has been approved but to date we still have only 2 on the books. A further 2 workers would certainly take the pressure off. During April we arranged to have stone delivered to the rear of the shop and this was spread by voluntary labour. At the same time the drain at the back door was covered with concrete pavers to make a smooth secure step. We have also been fortunate enough to be given some extra cube storage and this has been utilised to expand our linen section. It has been very encouraging to continue to hear the positive comments about the shop from both customers and volunteers and we are continuing to attract new customers weekly. Parish Council have approved the installation of a reverse cycle heater/cooler for the shop. Despite the cool snap customers kept rolling up and another excellent month was had. A mountain of electrical goods were tagged and tested. Thank you to Power Sauce. A big concern when we opened the shop was will we get enough stock?? But the Good Lord does provide (in abundance!) We welcome Mavis back from her cruise and now Sue and Anne are taking off. We were once labelled the no tears shop mainly because the volunteers laughed a lot. Nothing has changed. If a silly hat or some other strange apparel appears a volunteer will wear it. You may catch the odd one or two on social media. But we do have three quiet achievers Sara, Monique and Ned. These there mannequins give our boutique a certain cachet. Photos will follow once I learn how. Glenis Schultz ANGELS TREASURES & TRINITY HOUSE MOE We always welcome the opportunity of helping someone who is in need. Recently we were approached to give assistance to some refugees on bridging visas who were awaiting the outcome their application to be granted asylum is Australia. We were able to help out with clothing and furniture which was received with gratitude. While our Opportunity Shops serve the Parish well as far as earning income is concerned it is being able to serve the community in this way that makes it a ministry. Happy Birthday to: Bailey Purcell 16 /6, Mary Nicholls 17/6, Matthew Prosser 17/6, Luba Malika 19/6 Julie Bruce 23/6 Alice Weatherall 26/6 Gary Prosser 30/6 Lyle Seear celebrated his 90th Birthday last month. Belated Birthday wishes to you Lyle from all in our Church Family. NEW OFFERTORY ENVELOPES TO COMMENCE FROM JULY 1 st We have been continuing to use the Offertory Envelopes from the previous parishes of Moe and Newborough / Yallourn North. It is now time to move to a Moe- Newborough Parish Offertory Envelope. These new envelopes will commence on Sunday July 1 st. A congregational meeting was held on Sunday June 3 rd to explain how parishioners might use these envelopes. A form has been distributed for parishioners to request a set of the new envelopes. If you weren t at the meeting and wish to find out more please contact Parish Secretary, Jan Misiurka. The most important thing for the parish is our continued stewardship no matter how we decide to give our offertory. Penny has been unwell and hospitalised. Father Fred has also been unwell. It is with great relief that they are both recovering and are back with us again. Sometimes, the barrenness of winter makes people feel lonely. Despite bleak mid-winter months, we still want you to know God s companionship is always available. Don t forget that the Son can warm your winter days Sometimes we need someone to simply be there, not to fix anything or do anything in particular, but just to let us feel we are supported and cared about. If you know of someone within our parish family that requires that little bit of extra love or help, please make the effort to pay them a visit. Thank you for supporting the Biggest Morning Tea Breakfast. Thank you to Julie Bruce for organising the event. The Cancer Council will certainly appreciate your combined efforts, supporters and those who contributed and baked for the event. All external (non Moe-Newborough parish) fundraising activities are required to be submitted to : Fr. Sathi Anthony and Wardens for due processing and approval. is the official website of the Parish of Moe / Newborough. The website also allows us to post items to face book so for those who use face book look for the : moenewboroughanglicanparish. Our website contains up to date information about parish activities, worship services etc.
