From the Rector On Friday I was a guest of the Diocese of Perth at the Governors Prayer breakfast. This was a truly ecumenical event at which Christians of all ages and from all denominations prayed for the City of Perth and for our State. The keynote speaker at the breakfast was economist Professor Ian Harper who spoke enthusiastically and compellingly about what his Christian faith brings to his role as a leading economist and advisor to governments on economic issues. As a Christian economist, Professor Harper told the audience that he is privileged to advise governments on how to make material prosperity emerge, or in other words, how to avoid: high and rising unemployment; widespread bankruptcies of business; widening dispersions of income dispersion; and economic dysfunction. None of us want those things, but sadly they are all too familiar to many. The advice he gives is not always heeded, but in formulating his advice he told us that he is guided by the Great Commandment: to love our neighbours as ourselves. He challenged us all to think about our own professions and trades, and the things that we do each day in respect of the command of Jesus to love our neighbour. Specifically, how do all the things we do each day, reflect that command? Our challenge as a church community is to make that love self- evident to the wider community in the things we do through our worship, our teaching, our pastoral care, our social activities and so on. Over the coming weeks, please pray for all aspects of our congregational life and not least that we will be inspired and equipped to do things that help us to reach more people from all walks of life in our community. Have a great week! Fr. Nick 2

The Mapstone Scholars and Friends in Concert this Saturday! Flyers for this concert on 20 th August are available in the narthex. This is a fund raising concert for our music program and it would be really helpful if you could promote it amongst your family and friends and encourage them to buy tickets. It would be great if our musicians had a full church to perform to. Prayer Tree A prayer tree has been set up in the lady Chapel. If there is anything that you would like prayed for, please complete a tag and hang it on the tree. The choice is yours as to whether your prayer is anonymous or not. The tags will be taken off every Wednesday morning and we will pray for everything on the cards at our Wednesday morning Eucharist. Royal Commission In the light of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, we would like to advise that there are a number of expectations placed on clergy and laity who hold office in the Diocese. A document has been placed on the church notice board stating the expectations and the training that is required. If any of you have suffered abuse, or know of anyone who has suffered, we encourage you to make contact with the Director of Professional Standards, Ms Tracie Chambers- Clark , or the police. Next week s readings The Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost, 21 August at 9am. Father Nick preaching and presiding. Readings: Jeremiah 1:4-10, Psalm 71:1-6, Hebrews 12:18-29 and Luke 13: Please send any items for next week s PewNews+ to the church office (office@resurrectionswanbourne.com.au) by Wednesday evening. Thank you. 6

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. Hear the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Isaiah 61:

Psalm 113 Alleluia. Give praise, you servants of the Lord, O praise the name of the Lord. Blessed be the name of the Lord, from this time forth and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting let the name of the Lord be praised. The Lord is high above all nations and his glory above the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, that has his throne so high, yet humbles himself to behold the things of heaven and earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ashes, To set them with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a place in the house and makes her a joyful mother of children. Alleluia. Psalm 113 8

A Reading from the Letter to the Galatians But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Hear the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Galatians 4:4-7 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Luke 2:1-7 9
