ALIVE & LINKED THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF AUSTRALIA DIOCESE OF GIPPSLAND The Parish Paper of MOE-NEWBOROUGH St Luke s Moe St Aidan s Newborough St James Yallourn North Feast of Saint James - July 25th Saint James' Day is an occasion to honour the life and deeds of one of Jesus' disciples. It is a public holiday in the autonomous communities of the Basque Country and Galicia in Spain on July 25. St James, son of Zebedee, was an apostle and a brother of John the Apostle, According to Christian belief he spread Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula. He may have travelled to the area that is now Santiago de Compostela. St James was beheaded in Jerusalem in the year 44 CE. Some Christians believe that his disciples carried his body by sea, in a stone boat, to Padrón on the Galician coast. They then buried his body under what is now the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. St James' relics were discovered sometime between 791 CE and 842 CE. Santiago de Compostela then became a place of pilgrimage. Parish Prayer God of Eternity, Who makes all things new by your life within us: Circle us with your love, Fill us with your spirit, strengthen us with your power that we may be bearers of your word. Inspire others to walk in your steps and bring new life to all people for evermore. Amen Moe-Newborough AMUA News June Join In is an annual event where MU members and friends gather from around the diocese to share in worship, fellowship and glean information an on a topical subject this year being on strategies on preventing falls, which are one of the largest causes of harm in health care and are a national safety and quality priority. Alyssa, an occupational Therapist with Latrobe Community Health Services presented the afternoon session, along with beneficial hints that we can endeavour to undertake in our daily living good diet, rest, exercise to strengthen our limbs and planning, while reminding us of some of the unhealthy behaviours we may at time attempt! Climbing on unsafe chairs or ladders, reaching from these for items, especially if home alone, are some of these actions. Thanks to all who took part in our service, which our visitors embraced, particularly Sathi s reflection and the harmonious singing. Old friends caught up over lunch and sat again over afternoon tea as they prepared for the trip home. The noise level was quite high! Altogether a great day! Jenny MacRobb and Gwyneth Jones are to represent Gippsland AMUA at the the MULOA (Mothers Union Listening, Observing and Acting) Conference in Auckland in August and will come home enthused and with a lot to share. July 2018 On Monday July 16 th we are watching a video (The Potter), after our lunch, meeting from 12md at St Aidan s. All are welcome to join us.

Many Happy Returns to Judy King 8/7, Catherine Purcell 11/7 Gwyn Jones 13/, Mavis McAllister 19/7, Lainey Moore 30/7 Your Church Family wish you all a lovely Birthday. X X On Monday July 2 nd our Parish Guild will host two activities that are open to the whole community. The first is a 2 course casserole luncheon which will commence at 12 noon in the Multi Purpose Room at Albert Street Primary School (enter off Anzac Street). Cost $20. So invite your friends and neighbours and come along and join us for a time of food and fellowship. Following the luncheon at 1.00pm the Cliché Clothing Company will present a Fashion Parade of their latest clothing items for women and there is an opportunity to purchase at wholesale prices. So come for one or come for both. See you there. Judy Van Maurik VALE: It was with a packed Church that we said farewell to one of our devoted parishioners, June McIntosh. June passed away on 29th of May and her funeral was held at St Aidan s Church on 5th June. Farewell June you will be remembered with love from many. Our sincere condolences to Stephen, Kerry, Brendon and families. Parish Council agreed to the recarpeting of Saint Luke s Foyer at their May meeting. The old carpet had been there since the extensions were built over 25 years ago. While it had worn well it was suffering in appearance and certainly not a welcoming asset to the church. The new carpet was installed early this month and is appreciated by all. The congregation at Saint Luke s has welcomed their organ back into service after undergoing an extensive refurbishment. Mr Albert Fox, with an apprentice undertook the task which he described as both challenging and enjoyable. Albert recalls that he worked on the organ many years ago when it was located in Traralgon and he was so pleased to see that it was still in use. The refurbishment became a bigger task than anticipated because when the organ was stripped back it was found that borers had caused some extensive damage. With Albert s skill and experience he was able to handcraft a number of parts to repair the damage. This was the first major work that had been done on the organ since it was placed in the church and while it was expensive, we believe extremely worth it.

TOGETHER Our parish journey since we were officially amalgamated has witnessed a remarkable experience of togetherness. A combined service once a month is enjoyed by all. The Mother s Union, Ladies Guild, Men s breakfast and Sunday school - operating as programs of the one organisation. Members are freely attending services at all centres irrespective of their past allegiances. Activities such as The Biggest Morning Tea, Parish Dinner, Op Shops, The Antiques and Collectable fair are programs of the one parish. Common ownership of Parish funds and their responsible distribution.the once separate Alive and Link has become one Alive&Linked! To further enhance our journey of togetherness, suggestions have been put forward for consideration. To worship together more often The monthly combined services have been enjoyed by all. Often attended by about 50 people on a good day. The very interactive after-service fellowship time The choir of many combined voices From Father Sathi The suggestion is whether we could progress to more than once a month. To have one worship and ministry centre This will help worshipping together more often One building to accommodate a hall, worship and fellowship space, and administration rooms. A community friendly and public service facility The land is there The money is available Currently we have maintenance commitments with our older buildings and the surrounds. There are also suggestions for upgrading the communication system etc. Why not utilise that money instead for a common building that could incorporate our requirements and be maintenance free for quite a while! Could this be our gift for the future as we cannot live in the past. Remember the past may be, but, not live in the past. Fr Sathi Towards your togetherness. Consecration and Installation of Dr. Treloar as the 13th Bishop of Gippsland The Revd Dr. Richard Treloar will be consecrated as Bishop on Saturday 21st July at 10.30am at Saint Pauls Cathedral, Melbourne. Attendance is limited and seating is by reserve ticketing only. If you are interested in attending please see Jan Misiurka by Wednesday July 4th. Bishop Richard will then be installed as Bishop of Gippsland at Saint Pauls Cathedral Sale on Saturday 18th August at 11.00am

Antiques and Collectables Fair It s time once again to start preparing for our Annual Antiques and Collectables Fair which this year will be held on Saturday 13 th October and once again at Albert Street Primary School. This event has become a major fundraiser for the parish raising a total of over $4,000 in the past three years but has the potential to raise much more if we all get behind it.. The question is How can you as an individual be involved? Tell your friends, neighbours and relations about it- the best advertising is by word of mouth. If you wish you can have your own stall on the day or join with others to have a stall. If you wish to do this please apply as per all community stallholders (see below). We can also sell items for you on commission through the parish stall. We are seeking Hobby enthusiasts to display their collections on the day. In the past we have had such displays as old irons, icons and ecclesiastical items, Royal memorabilia, veteran cars. The possibilities are endless. If you know of someone who has a special collection then encourage them to come along (apply as below) Search through you relics and bring some interesting items along to have them valued. Antiques appraiser Stephen Axe will be present on the day. Offer to help with the pre fair preparations- setting up the room on the evening before, getting out flyers and advertising brochures, baking cakes etc for our cake stall and kiosk, providing some donations for our door prizes Helping out on the day- car park attendant, entrance ticket sales, bbq, kiosk, hosting community stall holders, parish Op shop stall Being there on the day. This is a Moe Newborough Parish Activity let s all get involved. To book a stall or collectables display please contact Mary Nicholls on or the Parish Office on Stalls available at $15 for outside, $20 undercover area. Church Trailer Our Parish Kids Plus group offered us their old covered in trailer, which was most generous of them. Upon a lot of research, costing and inspection we realized it was going to cost us a lot more than initially priced to restore to road safety requirements. A trailer was advertised and purchased close to the agreed value of the Kids Plus trailer repairs. The new trailer will require no further money outlay as Peter Brown has checked the electrics, wheels, built a cage and has ensured that it is roadworthy. Proposed Visual /Audio upgrade for St Aidan s Parish council have approved, in principle the sourcing, costing and eventual upgrade of our visual system at St Aidan s Church. This has been a lengthy process. Some quotes have been obtained but still waiting on a professional company to view and cost accordingly. The trailer will be housed inside the St Aidan s shed for security, weather protection and for convenience of use by the op shop shed sorters.

Parishioners will recall how in a response to an initiative by Mothers Union and World-wide GFS concerning highlighting the issue of Domestic Gender Violence the Parish undertook two initiatives. One was to be part of the Million Stars Project for the Commonwealth Games and the second was to hold a By-Stander training session conducted by Dr Ree Bodde from Think Prevent. Since then Parish Council has been considering how we might continue this work. A sub committee was established to bring back some ideas. The committee suggested that we might form a Parish Partnership with Gippsland Anglicare. To work out how this might look we met with Anglicare Community Development Officer Cathrine Muston. After a worthwhile discussion and a follow up meeting the sub committee is considering the possibility of opening the Madge Vinnell Room at 7 Anzac Street as a Drop In Centre where people might be able to come and spend some time. The thought is to provide Tea/Coffee, have a Children s play area, a quiet meditation area and a place where people could just talk and find a listening ear. We would look at providing resources for people to take and read covering where they might be able to get support from various agencies and also look at inviting agencies to come and conduct occasional sessions on topics such as budgeting, nutrition etc. Our role is simply to be a listener and to offer to put people in contact with appropriate support. Anglicare has indicated that they could help to resource the centre and would provide the necessary training for all those who are willing to participate as volunteers in the centre. So far our discussions have been encouraging, but it all depends on whether there is genuine support from the parish and that we have people who would be interested in being on the team. Please consider this carefully and if you would like to know more or express and interest in being involved talk to Jan, Gwyn, Graeme, Alice or Sathi.

MAGDALENE CENTRE NEWBOROUGH MAGDALENE CENTRE YALLOURN NORTH This month we continued to have a steady flow of customers despite some crisp weather. Welcome back to Sue, our co-ordinator, who has beencaring for her mother over the past weeks. A big thank you to Bev Gregory and all the volunteers for keeping the shop running smoothly during Sue s absence. NEWBOROUGH OP SHOP is struggling for volunteers over the winter period and are seeking help from our parishioners. Five of our volunteers have headed north to chase the sun and we have eleven shifts per week that need coverage. If you are part of our church family or not, we are asking for you to give us three hours per week if only until September it would be greatly appreciated Our volunteers are amazing people who give their time freely to support our op shop and we would hate to have to close our doors on some days due to lack of staffing. Everyone is welcome to volunteer and every person is highly valued so please help us to support our parish. As the Newborough Shop is so cold in the winter the Parish Council approved of a split system heating/cooling unit to be installed in the shop, the volunteers, customers and staff will certainly appreciate the heating. Kerri Brown: Magdalene Centre Manager The Parish Guild Invites all to join with them as they ask Mary and Graeme to share their experience of their journey to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a cruise up the Mekong into Cambodia to Phnom Penh and then to the mysterious Ankor Wat. Monday July 9 th 1.30pm at the Madge Vinnell Centre ( The portable building at 7 Anzac Street). Parking off Trinity Lane. Afternoon Tea will conclude the afternoon around 3pm. Glenis Schultz ANGELS TREASURES & TRINITY HOUSE MOE The volunteers at Angel s Treasures are sad to farewell our friend Margaret Taffs as she prepares to relocate to Western Victoria. Margaret has been a wonderful member of the team and we wish her well for her new beginning. Our thanks to all who have filled in positions on the roster during Norma s absence. It is great to see her returning to health and looking forward to joining us back in the shop. As we say farewell to team members and experience times when team members are unable to attend due to health or other reasons it reminds us of just how important each of our volunteers are. We are always looking for new members of the team even if it is only someone who can relieve when someone is away. We are also looking for people to assist with the Trinity House work either in manning the house on the 2 nd and 4 th Fridays and Saturdays (even for half a day), but also people who are able to pick up furniture when people offer it or to spend sometime in the house sorting out the stock. Graeme TRINITY HOUSE 2nd Hand Furniture & Bric-a Brac is open to the public on the 2nd and 4th Friday each month 10am to 4pm and the 2nd and 4th Saturday from 9am. All external (non Moe-Newborough parish) fundraising activities are required to be submitted to : Fr. Sathi Anthony and Wardens for due processing and approval. is the official website of the Parish of Moe / Newborough. The website also allows us to post items to face book so for those who use face book look for the : moenewboroughanglicanparish.
