3 The Eucharistic Prayer, The Dialogue, Preface and Sanctus Priest: The Lord be with you All: And with your spirit. Priest: Lift up your hearts All: We lift them up to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God All: It is right and just. This simple exchange of phrases or dialogue between the congregation and celebrant of the Mass set the stage for the apex of our celebration the Eucharistic Prayer. When we exchange these words as we do at ever Mass, we add our voices to those of countless Christians since the inception of the Church. St. Hippolytus includes this dialogue in his account of the early celebration of the Eucharist in Rome in the early 200 s A.D. St. Cyprian also explains these words as described in the early form of the Mass in North Africa: The Priest, by means of the preface before his prayer, prepares the minds of the people by saying Lift up your hearts. He does this so that when the people respond We lift them up to the Lord he may be reminded that he himself ought to think of nothing but the Lord. (cf. The Mass, 147) St. Augustine also had a special regard for these prayers and quoted them often to his congregation, urging them to lift up their hearts to the Lord where he is enthroned in glory For wherever your treasure is, there also will be your heart also. (Matthew 6:21; cf. TM, 148) What follows is the appropriate prayer recited by the priest alone. We call this part of the Mass the preface because it is the very threshold of the most important prayer, namely, the Eucharistic prayer. Thorough this prayer, Jesus becomes really present among us as he promised, and where Jesus abides, there is heaven. The text of the Preface varies from liturgy to liturgy and is influenced by the various liturgical seasons, although memorials of saints and martyrs may also impact the particular preface used. There are also specific prefaces set aside for the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Sacred Heart, the Most Holy Eucharist, the Apostles, and major feasts/solemnities among others. Usually the preface is recited, but sometimes it can be chanted to enhance the solemnity of the liturgy. The preface is an invitation as we approach the pinnacle of the liturgical celebration we are invited to stop, reflect, and lift our hearts and minds to God. As we prepare to do so, we are called to give praise to Him through another angelic hymn. The Sanctus or Holy, Holy has biblical roots. As recorded in the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah reported a vision of heaven Seraphim stationed above the throne each with six wings; with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with the other two they hovered above the throne as they cried to one another Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts All the earth is flied with Your glory! (Isaiah 6:2-3) The Book of Revelation also speaks of this hymn being sung by the four living creatures seated around the Lamb, exclaiming Holy, Holy, Holy is the one who was, the one who is, and the one who is to come! (Revelation 4:8) In the Mass, heaven and earth join in a single act of worship this hymn is a key indication of that (TM, 150). This hymn represents intersection of heaven and earth as St. Gregory of Nyssa explains: and now the creation that was once in conflict with itself- the world below against the world above is now knit together in friendship and we (men and women) are made to join in the angels song, offering the worship of their praise to God (cf. TM, 150) In the Western church, we add another piece to the hymn Hosanna, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the Highest! (Matthew 21:9). This connection reminds us of the children and people of Jerusalem who gave praise to Jesus as he entered their city to endure his Passion (which is commemorated each time we celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass, so it is appropriate that we exclaim this phrase at this moment in the liturgy). Christians have always interpreted this hymn as a confession of the Triune God the Blessed Trinity. God is a communion of three divine, holy persons who live eternally in unchanging love God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As we sing this hymn, we should remember that we are as close to heaven as the prophet Isaiah and St. John were in those visions we recalled in the Bible. We have lifted up our hearts to the Lord, and he has stooped down to our lowliness, as all the angels follow. We cannot help but join in their song as we give true and heartfelt praise to our God. Fr. JP Lectio Divina Reflection: Today s Gospel is Mark 1: Make a list of ten aspects of your life that consume much of your attention and energy. Which of these interfere with a Christ-centered life? Lectio Divina uses scripture to help you pray more deeply. Contact Helen McCullagh for more information. Join us for a Session on Sunday morning from 9-10:15am in the Considine Center. St. Barnabas High School is offering an SAT Prep Class. The six week class begins on January 30th and will prepare students for the March or May SAT class. The class will be taught by Mr. Tom Caserta. Please contact the school office at or for sign up information. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Please barnabassvdp@gmail.com so that together we can help the suffering and poor. Rosary For Priests Every Thursday following the 7:00pm Mass in the Main Church, several parishioners gather together to pray the Rosary for priests. Please consider joining them in supporting our priests through Our Lady s Rosary. PRO LIFE CORNER I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is "Abortion", because it is a war against the child... A direct killing of the innocent child, "Murder" by the mother herself... And if we can accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love... And we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts... - Mother Teresa
