3 The Liturgical Year The Seasons and Colors of the Liturgy Part 2 Advent (1 st Sunday of Advent (late November)-December 24 th ) The history and meaning of Advent comes from the 6 th -7 th centuries in the formulation of the liturgies of Rome. The popes of the time saw the season first as a preparation for the solemnity of the Coming of the Lord. Second as Christmas began to develop more significance in the life of the Church, especially during the Middle Ages, the notion of the second coming (eschaton) of the Lord also began to take shape. This is how Advent has developed its two-fold character and has become a season of joyful, yet penitential expectation this is why the Church wears purple during this time. The color Rose, generally used during the 3 rd Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday), is seen as a halfway mark in the season and blends the bright joy of white/gold used at Christmas with the penitential purple to create the color rose (or commonly known as pink). Christmas Season (December 25 th Baptism of the Lord) The development of the season of Christmas comes out of the readings that precede the season itself namely the prophecy of Isaiah and the unfolding of the Infancy Narratives (found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke). The Solemnity of the Nativity (Christmas) has four Masses with readings assigned to it (Christmas Eve, Mass at Midnight, Mass at Dawn, and Mass during the Day). The splendor of the Solemnity and the season call for the priest to wear white or gold with many beautiful feasts that fall during this season calling for these colors as well. Some include St. Stephen s Day (December 26 th ), St. John the Evangelist (December 27 th ), Holy Innocents (December 28 th ), Feast of the Holy Family (Sunday after Christmas), Solemnity of Mary Mother of God (January 1), Solemnity of the Epiphany (January 6 th or Sunday after Jan 1 st ) and the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (usually the Sunday after January 6 th ). Ordinary Time (Cycle I Week 1 of OT Tuesday before Ash Wednesday; Cycle II Monday after Pentecost to Saturday before 1 st Sunday of Advent) The season of Ordinary Time calls the Church to be reflective and contemplate the teachings and fabric of the faith thus we wear green primarily throughout. The readings follow a three year cycle based on the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew Year A, Mark Year B, and Luke - Year C). Seven major feasts of Our Lord fall during the two cycles of Ordinary Time: The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2), The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (Sunday after Pentecost), The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi commonly celebrated on the 2 nd Thursday after Pentecost but moved to Sundays in the US), the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (2 nd Friday after Pentecost), The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord (August 6 th ), the Feast of the Exultation or Triumph of the Cross (September 14 th ), and the Solemnity of Christ the King (34 th or Final Sunday of Ordinary Time). The Church s Liturgical Year is RICH and diverse and it is in this diversity that we are called to embrace its richness and the beauty of the prism that is the life and mission of Our Lord. We are called to allow ourselves to enter more deeply into the mysteries each time we step into the Church and engage the readings, offer our prayers to the Father and receive Our Lord in the Eucharist.
