PRO-LIFE CORNER Lectio Divina Reflection Lectio Divina Reflection: Today s Gospel is Matthew 2:1-12. What have you done to carry the light of Christ to others today? What can you do before the sun goes down on another day?? Lectio Divina can be a great way to spend your Sunday morning from 9:00-10:15 am. Contact Helen McCullagh for more information. Children truly are the family's greatest treasure and most precious good. Consequently, everyone must be helped to become aware of the intrinsic evil of the crime of abortion. In attacking human life in its very first stages, it is also an aggression against society itself. Politicians and legislators, therefore, as servants of the common good, are duty bound to defend the fundamental right to life, the fruit of God s love. ~ Pope Benedict XVI, 12/2005 ~
2 The January Monthly Food Collection About Feeding Our Neighbors Feeding Our Neighbors is a united effort to fight hunger. This campaign is a response to Timothy Cardinal Dolan's call that we all do our part to replenish the food pantries and soup kitchens in our community, which so many families in our community rely on to survive. Sponsored by Catholic organizations throughout the Archdiocese of New York and managed by Catholic Charities, 100% of contributions to the campaign will support local food pantries that serve New Yorkers, non-catholics and Catholics alike. Organizational participants in Feeding Our Neighbors include all Archdiocesan Catholic schools, local parishes, the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education, and the Catholic Charities Federation. There is just one goal for Feeding Our Neighbors: That New Yorkers answer the call to feed those who are suffering in our community We would like to ask all parishioners to participate in an extra food collection in January. We will receive nonperishable foods on the 3rd weekend in January (January 17th & 18th) after the Masses in the High School Cafeteria. The recipient of the Food Campaign will go the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal as usual. Please do NOT bring food items to the rectory. Thank you ITALY CHOIR TRIP The St. Barnabas Festival Choir is made up of students in grades 4 through 12 from St. Barnabas Elementary, High School and Parish. The High School students from the parish and High School last year took part in the New York High School Choir Festival in Manhattan and did very well. From that venue the choirs have been invited to travel to Rome to sing for Pope Francis. Some highlights of the trip will be singing in the Papal Audience Hall and joining with the Sistine Chapel Choir to sing the Epiphany Mass on January 6, This is both an honor and a once in a life time opportunity. We currently are the only New York Choir participating. The cost for each student is 3,000 dollars. Our choir will be fundraising to help defer the cost. We currently have several young people who wish to go but are having financial difficulty. If you can help sponsor a child by donating part of all of the cost please contact Sharon Traditi at the High School or Religious Education Office or Shauna Mahoney at the Rectory. Contributions can remain anonymous if you would like to remain anonymous please let us know at the time. Any support you can give our youth is greatly appreciated World Meeting of Families 2015 On September 22-27, 2015, Philadelphia will welcome th the 8 World Meeting of Families. This is an historic event which will have dynamic and inspirational speakers, daily celebration of Mass, and evening and weekend events and festivities. 3 The Annual March for Life Thursday, January 22nd, 2015 in Washington, D.C. THE FIRST RIGHT IS THE RIGHT TO LIVE. Join us on January 22, 2015 as we leave from St. Barnabas s parking lot at 7:15am (following the 6:30am Mass) to join tens of thousands of people for a peaceful rally and March for Life. The March for Life sends a message to those in Washington, D.C. that each and every human life has dignity. If you have never marched before, join us NOW!!! You will not hear about the March for Life from the media because the media no longer reports about the March. The media does not want to show the range of people supporting human life. So find out for yourself. Bring the family. Join your children, especially teen-agers, in supporting the dignity of each human life. They may miss a day of school, but the March is educational in ways that truly matter. The life you save may be someone from your own family. If you cannot afford the bus fare, arrangements will be made. Bring food on the bus, dress in layers, good walking shoe. The march is about 2 miles. Please call Fr. Brendan Gormley for more information ext 18. Our Parish Information is just a click away Log on to PLANNING YOUR MARRIAGE Please be aware that couples planning a marriage should make an appointment to see a priest at least six (6) months prior to the wedding. This is especially important for those who will be married outside the United States. The regulations, both civil and religious, are sometimes complicated and demanding. There is very little the local priest can do if papers and documents are not gathered in time to satisfy the requirements of the other country. All couples, whether the wedding will take place here or in another jurisdiction, must attend the Pre-Cana classes. Recently dated copies of Baptism must be obtained as well as Communion and Confirmation records. One last note: it is generally best to call a designated priest for an appointment concerning these matters rather than to just drop in. In that way, you will be assured that the priest will be able to give the time required to explain the various factors involved. Presentation on Martin Luther King, sponsored by Immaculate Conception Church, 754 Gun Hill Road. Sunday, January 18th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm by Vivian Taylor. Presentation includes the church choirs.
