1 seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 23, 2014 ADULT FAITH FORMATION HAS BEGUN Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gadium) The Pope s Sweeping Vision of the Church TASTE THE JOY We will cover the Sections on the following dates in the Lower Church: February 22 (9:15am) or February 25 (7:30pm) Introduction (Section 1-18) We are more than human. We have personally encountered our God. Chapter I (Sections 19 49) Parishes always re-create themselves. We are not as much parishioners as we are evangelizers for Christ. If you have yet to make Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation (Evangelii Gadium Joy of the Gospel) a must read, than get a taste of its flavor with these quotes. March 1 (9:15am) or March 4 (7:30pm) Chapter II (Section ) This covers areas that are ripe for Christ influence. What influence do we say yes to and what areas do we say no to? We are never pessimistic because we work for Christ. Chapter III (Section ) As vital as the institution of the church is, the individual person is called to teach with cultivated personal attributes. (Please gloss over the homily sections. Instead think of ways you can be a better listener of the Word). March 8 (9:15am) or March 11 (7:30pm) Chapter IV (Section ) Here, Pope Francis reveals his deepest passion and extended teachings on Jesus concern for the poor. Jesus concern is our concern. Chapter V (Section ) If you can read no other chapter, read this one! It is a chapter of Wisdom; it is a chapter of inspiration. Underline his wisdom saying. Where do we go from here? The Pope does not give us another program to follow. We have done that. The Pope doesn t give us new teachings. We have them. He doesn t give us new resolutions. We have done that. He asks us to take a path to follow. This path is joy. The destination is Christ. The traveler and the guides are you. Today, our challenge is not so much atheism as the need to respond adequately to many people s thirst for God, lest they try to satisfy it with alienating solutions or with a disembodied Jesus who demands nothing of us with regard to others. (89) Before all else, the Gospel invites us to respond to the God of love who saves us, to see God in others and to go forth from ourselves to seek the good of others. (39) We become fully human when we become more than human, when we let God bring us beyond ourselves in order to attain the fullest truth of our beings. (8) It is imperative to evangelize cultures in order to inculturate the Gospel We must keep in mind, however, that we are constantly being called to grow. Each culture and social group needs purification and growth. (69) There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without Easter (6) We have to state, without mincing words, that there is an inseparable bond between our faith and the poor. May we never abandon them. (48) I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security (49) I hope that we will be moved by the fear of remaining shut up within structures which give us a false sense of security, within rules which make us harsh judges, within habits which make us feel safe, while at our door people are starving and Jesus does not tire of saying to us: Give them something to eat (Mk 6:37). (49) The primary reason for evangelizing is the love of Jesus which we have received, the experience of salvation which urges us to ever greater love of him. What kind of love would not feel the need to speak of the beloved, to point him out, to make him known? (264)
2 MAKING ALL THINGS NEW Our Parish core team has met the required number of times with the Core Teams of Saint Ann, St. John, St. Paul and St. Casmir. We have consulted with each other on areas where our parishes can share resources. Of course, this consulting is simply theoretically at this point. Our findings will be going to the Archdiocesan Consultant Team for review. Once our Yonkers Cluster group receives their feedback it will be up to our parish council to develop a plan to share resources with our fellow cluster parishes. There will be degrees of sharing resources, depending on the situation of each parish. We will not directly be sharing parish income (as someone asked). Actually, we already do that throughout the Archdiocese through the Inter-parish Finance Program. SNOW MOUNDS Tithing & Stewardship February 16, 2014 $11, Thank you for your contributions DANGEROUSLY LOW Our weekly income has hit an all-time low because you are unable to get to Mass with your contributions. Please makeup missed opportunities in the upcoming collection or stop by the rectory office with your contribution. Because motorists may not see young students entering crosswalks from behind mounds of snow, Saint Barnabas Church hired a private contractor to remove the mounds from around the Elementary School for the safety of our children. Your generosity is appreciated The minor seminarians received donations in November from parishioners to the amount of $4, for their pilgrimage to the tome of Saint Damian of Molokai. WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR NEW WEBSITE HAS NOW LAUNCHED. Saint Patrick s Party PLEASE CHECK IT OUT AT: Sunday, March 9th 2:30pm 6:30pm in the High School Cafeteria.
